Really loving these ! Bringing me back to my youth learning about William the Conqueror- she’s a great historian

I love Lucy worsley programmes. I watched an old one about the witch hunts recently as well as the Jack the Ripper one from the new series.

witchycat2 · 17/01/2025 21:22

She's so watchable. I really like her lady killers / swindlers podcast too

Paradoes · 17/01/2025 21:23

i saw the Jack the Ripper one and how the wealthy used to drive to the slum areas to watch for entertainment 😢

I must catch those thank you - yes she’s really engaging

I found it interesting learning about the victims' back stories.

I found it interesting learning about the victims' back stories.

Yes it's important to remember they were real people with often sad stories that led them to that point.

ChestnutGrove · 17/01/2025 21:26

She did a lovely Christmas one too about Tudor times. It wasn't on this Xmas though

spoonfulofsugar1 · 17/01/2025 21:27

I love pretty much all of her stuff, but especially her documentaries on the tudors.
The 1066 and Jack the Rippers ones from this series were fab :) loved how excited she was with the Domesday book!
She did a tour recently I think, but it was on Agatha Christie, which is not my cup of tea... I'd like to watch her talk about the tudors

Yes, and so glad how Lucy and the other two experts she spoke too, were clear to state that they were not all prostitutes as commonly thought.

Paradoes · 17/01/2025 21:41

yrs / prostitution was your label even if that was not the truth and even if you were it was essential to survive

made me laugh that the women embroidered the Bayeux Tapestry but the men did not know it was embroidered

I watched last night and took note of the date at the bottom, wondering if it was a repeat, but I think it's a brand new series and I'm sorry I missed the first two, because last night's Normans were 3/4. Yes, I know - I Player!

Snowmanscarf · 18/01/2025 08:53

She’s one of my girl crushes (o’m straight).

QueenofLouisiana · 18/01/2025 08:54

I’d missed the first series but I’m really enjoying the current one. I’ll go back and watch the other one on iPlayer.

Paradoes · 18/01/2025 08:55

i hear you Snowmanscarf

I love Lucy (ha), she's really engaging and makes the subjects fascinating.

If anyone wants to learn more about the ripper's victims I can definitely recommend The Five by Hallie Rubenhold who was on the program. I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed it.

MonickerMonica · 18/01/2025 09:22

Another fan here of Lucy. Her docs are great. My neighbour says she'd rather watch Love Island as they're about real people in the real world.

Oh dear.😕

DisplayPurposesOnly · 18/01/2025 09:29

Her series about the Blitz is an absolute eye-opener. I really recommend it but some of the stories are quite harrowing. Ordinary people in extraordinary situations.

dynamiccactus · 18/01/2025 17:42

She has a Substack newsletter now as well. She's an excellent writer too (I know she also writes books, my DH bought the one about Agatha Christie).

Some people have all the talent...

Nomnomnew · 18/01/2025 18:15

I loved these too, and the first series! I really enjoyed the one about Mary I, I love history but felt so stupid that I’ve never really recognised the amazing pioneer that Mary I was! Have never been that interested in her, but will read some more now I think and reconsider the bad rep.

I’d second the recommendation by PP of The Five, it made me so sad to think we’ve just remembered them as prostitutes for over a hundred years, when they were women with far far more to their stories. It’s a very readable book.

Shityshitybangbang · 18/01/2025 23:02

i wish she was my history teacher at high school. I might have listened more ☺️. I love her programmes

CaraCameleon · 18/01/2025 23:05

I love her too. Alice Roberts is my other heroine. I think they are both such interesting , engaging presenters with a real passion for their subject.

LlynTegid · 19/01/2025 12:31

Interesting that these documentaries have gone beyond the immediate period of what are generally well known historical events. I found the northern rebels post the Battle of Hastings really interesting.

StarCourt · 19/01/2025 12:52

She has a tour coming up about Jane Austen

MonickerMonica · 19/01/2025 17:48

I also watch Ruth Goodman's shorter YouTube videos. Quite fascinating and also entertaining.

Yes, lay waste the territory, destroy the houses and the crops. Well, in how many places in 2025 might that same tactic be being used? Don't answer, anyone. The list's probably too long.
I live in a village which is recorded in the Domesday Book. She helped me to understand that it was about a transfer of ownership.
