Late to the party - Gavin & Stacey: I have QUESTIONS!

So just watched the whole lot of G&S having never seen it before. I have questions….

What do Bryn & Gwen do for money?
Bryn’s a closet gay isn’t he?
Why did Stacey go from working in an office then M&S to just run a seaside kiosk?
Nessa’s stories about her past - just a comic device?

There’s mention in one scene - a party at Pam and Mick’s - about how much money Bryn gets each week. Something about “a bit of fiddling”. I think he lives on benefits.

My opinion is that that is reading very deeply into the character. Nothing in the show indicated whether his past partners were male or female (except the fishing trip gag- which everyone knew about), or whether his family knew about his sexuality one way or another.

All the characters were written to be awkward and push the boundaries of normal social contact in different ways. But ultimately the writers wrote them with love and kindness in my opinion.

Yes I never felt a need to label or pigeon hole any character. Beautifully written always.
John Prescott story and cameo one of the best ever story lines! It was the first thing I thought about when he died.
I think Gavin and Stacey was just all accepting and everybody welcome.
Loved the Christmas special but made me sad too.

I assumed Gwen had a pension/life insurance from her husband, which meant she could stay being a housewife.

Gwen got nothing from Trevor as it is mentioned a couple of times that Trevor left her penniless when discussing Stacey doing well marrying into the Shipman family.

I always took it that Stacey having lots of different random jobs was because she's a bit flakey and not overly intelligent. Having been engaged 5 times before Gavin shows she never really sticks at anything.

Read somewhere online the other day that the fact Bryn always goes into Gwen's house by the back door despite living right opposite her is part of the closet gay joke. But who knows?!

They were discussing on Radio 2 takeover that it's just ridiculous that Bryn comes in the back door when he lives directly opposite Gwen so would be much quicker to go through the front door which would take seconds than on a long winded trip to the back door of a terraced house which would take 5 minutes or more.

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/01/2025 08:15

A lot of people in terraced houses only use the back door. The front room is small so they might even have a sofa in front of it. Gwen opens her front door to 'visitors' but friends and family let themselves in the back way.

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/01/2025 08:18

Now I come to think of it, I used to live in a detached house in a mining area and even my neighbour who lived opposite came to the back door. It's just the custom.

BuzzieLittleBee · 17/01/2025 08:35

Ah yes. Good point about Gwen being a 'penniless widow'. I'd forgotten that. And she'd probably have been in her late 40s at the start of it, so really quite young. I had never thought about what she did for money. Or Bryn. But now I want to know...

Tcsha · 17/01/2025 08:51

I thought how little Alison Steadman had aged since the last one! She didn’t look any different to me.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 17/01/2025 09:52

Doesn’t Stacey to Gavin in series 1 - why haven’t you come round the back after he’s had drinks with Ahmed.

ChessieFL · 17/01/2025 10:05

Gwen and Bryn might have worked but it just never got mentioned because it was never relevant to the plot.

We also don’t know what Mick’s job was. We know he had one and it was in an office but that’s about it.

There’s also never anything stated about whether Pam works or not. The implication is that she doesn’t and she looks after the house but that’s never explicitly stated.

HeffalumpsAndWoozlesAreHoneyRobbingTwats · 17/01/2025 10:08

I want to know how Gwen does her omelettes.

SophiaSW1 · 17/01/2025 10:42

@ChessieFL Mick's the MD of an engineering company. It's in the episode where he's on the news after finding a dead body 😊

ThatsNotMyTeen · 17/01/2025 10:45

G and S got married on Trevor’s 50th birthday and Bryn was his younger brother remember

Agree. I grew up in a terraced house and the front door was never used. I only saw it open a handful of times.

This is because Radio 2 presenters are out of touch with ex mining communities and other such back to back communities.. It is a perfectly normal tradition started as not to bring dirt from the streets which were black into the best room. It is bred into folk from that background and if you move into that community you soon find yourself doing the same.
Radio 2 are very out of touch in general hence why their traditional listeners and broadcasters have left in their droves.

It was the Gavin and Stacey cast that were taking over Radio 2, not the normal radio presenters.

Yes you’re right, I didn’t think it specified what the company was/what his role was but have just watched it back and it does. I stand corrected!

Yes I agree, I thought she'd barely aged

Re Stacey's job, she left her admin job when she moved to Essex after she married Gavin. She seemed to struggle to find work in Essex (and generally to settle there) - I remember her talking about not getting any response to her applications. The M&S job was only shown in the Christmas special. Then they moved back to Wales but she wasn't able to get her old admin job back so she got the kiosk job instead.
