Walter White is an awful person

I'm on Season 2 of Breaking Bad. I haven't googled the programme at all, so was unaware that Skyler gets a lot of hate online (my daughter has just told me this). Well, what a surprise, the bar is set so much lower for a man!
He's greedy, selfish, unbelievably dishonest and cruel. He has just watched Jesse's girlfriend choke to death on her own vomit!
He deserves everything that is hopefully coming to him.
Team Skyler for me! And Walt Jnr/Flynn is adorable.

Walt was given the opportunity to have all his medical care paid for by his old friend and business partner (can't recall his name). There was no "need" for him to Break Bad at all, save his pride. That's part of the complexity of the whole situation. He isn't really doing it for his family; it's for himself.

Thank goodness for the NHS there would have been no story. I don't know any teachers having to wash their students cars to make ends meet either.

JMSA · 13/01/2025 19:20

@Twaddlepip

I'd take your ridiculous point if the show wasn't approximately 15 years old.
And why would you read this thread if you were spoiler avoidant anyway?! 😅

You can't claim spoiler alert for a show that's years old!

Obviously I was joking, it came out in 2008. It was supposed to poke gentle fun at the fact that the OP is watching something (admittedly a quality show) that’s pretty old. And posting about it.

Had this discussion with my DP who’s a Walt apologist. I disliked him from the start too. Early doors he tried to coerce/rape Skyler and he does it again at a later date, murdering people left right and centre, and he only cares for Jesse “like a son” when he’s on the same page. The minute anyone shows any independent thought about anything WW will cut them loose or kill them.

But Sklyer is annoying and sings happy birthday to another man. So she’s just as bad!

On my second watch I was a lot more sympathetic to Skyler, but that Monroe impression is irredeemably cringe.

@Twaddlepip

Aah, I do apologise. I thought that maybe you were even later to the party than I was!

Bryan Cranston seems like a genuinely nice man.

Absolutely, I really like him!

Lorrdydoowhatevs · 14/01/2025 02:45

Great show! Better Call Saul is waiting in the wings, I enjoyed it even more than Breaking Bad.

XelaM · 14/01/2025 02:55

Breaking Bad seasons 1-4 are absolute perfection. I hated season 5 though. They should have ended it with season 4.

I think Skyler gets hate for some of her behaviour in later seasons.

CottonCandyLand · 14/01/2025 03:53

I’m another one who really enjoyed BB but couldn’t believe how much better (IMO) Better Call Saul was. It’s truly genius.
When a TV show has you thinking about it for ages and sparks a lot of conversation with your OH you know it’s good.

mikado1 · 14/01/2025 04:10

That's a turning point for sure that you're at OP. So much more to come. Lucky you!! Started it April 2012 and watched finale in real time.. such a build up at the time. I'll rewatch it all again some day.

CandlesAndCrystals · 14/01/2025 04:44

I was always rooting for Jesse to get away from him, it was one hell of a toxic relationship. Felt so sorry for Walter's family too, they suffered so much totally unnecessarily. The show reminded me that you can't ever really trust or know anyone unless you've been through hard times with them, because it's fairly easy to be nice when things are going your way, but who knows what depravity lies beneath that veneer.

CheekyHobson · 14/01/2025 05:07

SerendipityJane · 11/01/2025 17:04

The genius of the show is you end up rooting for him.

(See also "The Shield")

I didn’t, I loathed him by the end.

chattyness · 14/01/2025 05:32

I had a love hate relationship with Walt because he did start off as a good man who got dealt shitty life cards and wanted to leave his family set up in a good place.....But what he was doing and how he did it was awful, which is the point of the show & is what keeps you watching see how his character develops and changes and the outcome of it all. What makes you want to keep rooting for Walt & Jesse is that the people they had to deal with as they went along were so much worse than they were so you wanted Walt & Jesse to come out on top.The same with Skyler, she made the best of what she was dealt, partly out of fear and partly out of greed , she was just as manipulative in her own way. I liked and disliked her too at various times throughout. I never liked Marie at all she was bossy, annoying and horrible , I couldn't stand her character at all!

purplespink · 14/01/2025 07:43

@CottonCandyLand 100% agree.

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/01/2025 08:39

Which Series starts each episode with flashbacks of Walt sitting by the pool? that was the best one imo. A shocker!

PrincessScarlett · 14/01/2025 12:42

One of my favourite episodes was the flashback one of Hector and Gus Fring which had massive consequences for both of them. Absolutely loved Gus's character (even though he was a baddie).

Better Call Saul fleshes out the Salamanca-Fring dynamic perfectly. And introduces one of TVs most memorable baddies.

What did you make of Marie's kleptomania? Did that just further cement your dislike of her?

Copernicus321 · 14/01/2025 18:26

As many have said, it's the point of the series. Walter goes from being good to bad. He worries about how his family will survive when the cancer gets him, how he can provide for them after he's gone. You step through the journey with him from uninitiated naivety driven by necessity to a scheming villain. Once he embarks on his journey, each early step see's him unwittingly get deeper and deeper into a situation that is increasingly beyond his control. Then like a frog that slowly becomes use to warming water, you see him change as he adapts to the situation.

Itsalwaysfools · 14/01/2025 18:13

Yes because she refused to address it, yet expected everyone else to be squeaky clean

JMSA · 15/01/2025 02:00

I actually feel sorry for Marie at the moment. Hank is home from hospital and is being impossible to live with. She is desperately sad and lonely, hence the Walter Mitty house viewings!

OP posts:
HoraceCope · 15/01/2025 02:13

is it Marie, Hank's wife,
she is great

HoraceCope · 15/01/2025 02:13

and marie always has purple around her

ShirkingFromHome95 · 15/01/2025 02:28

I also assumed that he wasn’t happy that he’d ‘only’ become a chemistry teacher and hadn’t used his apparent genius doing something more groundbreaking and lucrative so he goes a bit mad when given the power to do so. It’s a horribly tragic mid-life crisis.

I think he stayed a teacher by choice though as doesn't he have a friend that keeps trying to convince him to come work in pharma or something and put his knowledge to good use?

beachcitygirl · 15/01/2025 03:09

For me the whole point was to see how long and how much we would forgive him. Given the system etc
But by season 3 I was hating him.
Treatment of Jessie
His own ego
Why oh why didn't he just take the money from his ex colleagues.

He loves the power.
I adored BB
But absolutely watch better call Saul and also the movie that starts where bb ends with Jessie before that "el Camino"
Ties everything together
I envy you with it all
Ahead of you
