Series to Watch with DD(8)

DD has seen a couple of the first episodes of Gilmore Girls but it's a good few years too old for her (themes, language).

We've watched a bit of old Sabrina and Sister, Sister but we've got to the same kind point with those.

Any recommendations for shows that I'll also be able to tolerate watching with her regularly?

Larkrise to Candleford
Portrait Artist of the Year

I forgot to add, we've watched Interior Design Masters, Junior Taskmaster, Bake Off, Pottery Throwdown, The Sewing Bee, etc. so something along those lines would work for family viewing.

However, we're looking for something we can watch when we have a girl's evening so.

She's not hugely into period dramas unless there's a sci-fi twist.

Star Trek, Young Sheldon, Batman animated series.

HPandthelastwish · 02/01/2025 16:43

Theres a great Jeff Goldblum series where he explores different things on Disney+ (Nat Geo)

Series we enjoyed and most had accompanying books too.
Series of Unfortunate Events
Just Add Magic
Mysterious Benedict's Society
Percy Jackson

Malory Towers, The Dumping Ground (plus all its spin offs) and Find Me In Paris were all shows that DD enjoyed around this age (all BBC). I thought they were all tolerable! The four recent Famous Five dramas are also pretty decent.

FuckItItsFine · 02/01/2025 16:57

Lego Masters

AgricolaOrBed · 02/01/2025 16:58

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Phineyj · 02/01/2025 16:58

Also H20: Just Add Water. That was kind of fun. Neighbours with mermaids!

I also liked Hardball and So Awkward.

Happyinarcon · 02/01/2025 17:00

I tried to get my daughter into that 80s Monkey Magic TV show with the voiceovers but she wasn’t a fan. Still think it’s brilliant

itsmeits · 02/01/2025 17:00

My daughters love H2O animated, film and series - I enjoyed it myself.
Percy jackson series - films are naff IMO - book series is good also.
Another vote for the dumbing ground.
I would watch robot wars, and scrap heap challenge with my dad and enjoyed them.

Cosycore · 02/01/2025 17:02

XO, Kitty
its a series spin off of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before
it’s on Netflix.

PancakeClock · 02/01/2025 17:09

Taskmaster (bleeped version) on All 4, much better than the junior one.

GreyKoala · 02/01/2025 17:23

The Bureau of Magical Things ?

QuillBill · 02/01/2025 17:36

His Dark Materials

HPandthelastwish · 02/01/2025 17:44

I'd say His Dark Materials is probably better for 11+, there are some quite dark themes in it.

Around the World in 80 days series also on BBC iplayer is probably better for that age (David Tennant version)

Lindtnotlint · 02/01/2025 17:49

Mysterious Benedict Society - it’s really high quality tv and definitely watchable by an adult despite being totally kid friendly. Strong recommend.

MadeForThis · 02/01/2025 17:50

Traitors, masked singer.

Lindtnotlint · 02/01/2025 17:58

Another idea, Doctor Who (all the modern series are on iplayer - you could choose a fave doctor eg David Tennant….)

Topbird29 · 02/01/2025 18:00

Ghosts.
I second the percy jackson series on netflix. My 2 DS can't wait for series 2. And we did sit every week together to watch the next episode.
Am sure amazon prime has loads of old series I watched growing up - the a-team mcgyver etc - but not sure how they have stood the test of time!

HPandthelastwish · 02/01/2025 18:29

DD and I often watch 'old' films, she watched The Truman Show around 8 and its her favourite film now.

Topbird29 · 02/01/2025 18:42

How about the series of stargate?
Or quantum leap?

Anythingyousay · 02/01/2025 18:59

My 9 year old DD loves The Traitors and 1% club.

marmitegirl01 · 02/01/2025 19:42

Ghosts. Bake Off.

Puppupandaway · 02/01/2025 19:55

Another vote for Ghosts and Dr Who. My DD also loves 'Is it Cake' on Netflix. Masked singer and Masked dancer?
