My Dp’s mum is coming to stay for a few days over Xmas.

We need a film to watch without too much swearing, violence or sex. Last time she stayed we watch The Lady in The Van, which she loved.

Jerry and Marge go large.

I read this as Jerry and Margo go Large and was wondering how I'd missed a Good Life spin off. I'd have so watched that.

Christmas Oranges is a lovely film.

Quartet

Loved this.
Thanks for the reminder- will definitely watch this again over Christmas.

Thanks for suggestions. Definitely some here. I’ve seen Wicked Little letters and there is FAR too much swearing in it! She’d hate it.

I should have specified perhaps not Disney films, I know those fit the bill, but not really for this 85 year old!

Both mum and I enjoyed Mrs Harris Goes to Paris- currently on Netflix

Do not watch "bad santa" I mistakenly took my elderly dad to see this in the cinema and could have died

We picked it as an xmas eve film with DS who was then 14 or 15. It's a 15 and has a great rating on rotten tomatoes. Should have read the actual comments! We were all cringing and still laugh about what a bad choice as family viewing.

Iloveeverycat · 22/12/2024 19:04

Always look on IMBD they have parent's guide for swearing violence and nudity and tells you exactly what content it has very helpful sometimes.

Sunshineandoranges · 22/12/2024 19:05

Mrs Harris Goes To Paris with pauline Collins or Shirley valentine. Quartet is also good with pauline collins

zaxxon · 22/12/2024 19:08

The Dig is not very good, I thought. The director seemed to be going out of his way to avoid showing us the actors' faces. And he had Ralph Fiennes!

A Man on the Inside is really sweet. It does poke fun at the elderly, slightly, but in an affectionate way, and touches on issues of ageism and ableism thoughtfully.

My DM (82) enjoyed Conclave, although I haven't seen it myself

CrushingOnRubies · 22/12/2024 19:10

I'm not sure if it's in any streaming platform. But the Woman in Gold with Ryan Reynolds and Helen Mirren is good

True life story of a lady trying to get a Gustav Klimt portrait of her aunt which was stolen by the Nazis back.

RedRiverShore5 · 22/12/2024 19:36

23 Walks on Prime, film about 2 older people that meet each other while dog walking

The Dig or Edie might fit the bill.

I second both!

Wicked Little Letters is full of swearing isnt it?

Well it is, but because that is the pure point of the film, ( set in 1950s and 'upright community', it sets the swearing apart as its not "gratuitous, but rather the crux of the context.
I think it could work even with someone who doesn't like swearing, as such.

KneesUnder · 24/12/2024 07:06

the Kings Speech would fit the bill. It has a couple of mild swear words but very much not gratuitous.

Maddy70 · 24/12/2024 07:08

A man called otto
