Oh thank you! Love this.

tennissquare · 05/12/2024 17:34

Thanks for reminder, I love this too and it's 1 of my favourite PD James books. - death in holy orders.

Is the conclusion tonight? I thought there were 2 more episodes next week. Or will that be another case.

Anyhow, I enjoyed it. Thought it looked good ie in tune with the times.

Not quite sure of this interpretation of Dalgliesh. Not saying its wrong, just not sure what it is meant to be saying.

Meant to ask, what happened to Kate Miskin? The new side kick made some snide remark about her.

I have to admit I was a bit disappointed with last night. I think it didn't help that the Martin Shaw version was repeated on Drama only last week and that version took on the whole of the book. This version has eliminated over half the content but admittedly two one hour episodes would not be long enough to do it justice. I like Bertie Carvell but I can't see the love interest with Emma played by Claire Goose.

I think the actress playing her probably had other projects. The Dalgliesh/Kate relationship was never overstated in any of the books. Also in the books she was white working class and this version took another line in that respect.

Spoiler!!!!!!!!!!

Martin Shaw as Dalbliesh was just terrible.

Yes I remember when she was first cast there was a bit of grumbling because given the 70s not sure that she would have got a post like that.

I meant more in terms of the plot of this series.

Didn't she make some sort of declaration to Dalgliesh and it all got very embarrassing.

I remember the new side kick (cant remember his name), who has now been promoted, was very hostile towards her.

I am not saying Martin Shaw interpretation was great but that production did cover the entire content of the book. This one feels like a 'pick out one or two of the story threads'. Without the Inspector Yarborough plot the hatred of the Archdeacon seemed rather half hearted.

Watching tonight's episode. Now I'm looking it as 'drama using characters created by PD James' I am actually quite enjoying it.

I think that's quite a good way of looking at it.

Its so long since I read the book that I cant remember the actual story line.

So was able to accept this one.

There were some bits that I thought didn't quite work. The absent mother, who abandoned her son, was never really explained.

But in a way it was / is a show where well established actors put in polished preformances. So as much about the characters as the plot.

Anton Lesser is always convincing.

But still cant quite grasp what the character of this Dalgliesh is meant to be.

He sort of glides round being superior, and then when pushed but some other crass remark or actions, explains in an eliptical way how he feels it should have been dealt with.

A sort of be-suited Buddha

I watche last night's episode and thought it an interesting re-working of the original story.

But cant quite work out how they will reach the conclusion of the book, given the changes they have made.

Will find out later tonight!

I suppose its a bit like Miss Marple, or Poirot. Each generation re-interprets to meeting current outlook.

Not sure anyone does pure transcription of novels onto the screen.

@IwantToRetire I read somewhere an interview with Bertie Carvel (gosh who I love. Such an amazing character actir). He said this version of Dalgleish was almost meant to be out of time, watchful of the action rather than embedded within it. I quite like the version - very restrained but with warmth and depth at certain moments.

I'm only half way through death in holy orders. But yes I remember the book and a lot is missing! Also wondered about Kate Miskin character - is it possible she'll return in the later episodes once the sergeant has gone for his management training?

That's interesting - based on what I assume out of time means.

As to the plot development I wont say.

But I did enjoy the reworking of Cover Her Face.

I think I have found the interview and more than anything feel a complete - not sure what.

I had totally forgotten about the death of his wife.

Had I remembered this am sure I would have got a very different understanding.

Really enjoying the series so far, but cannot stand the new sergeant!

Clawdy · 19/12/2024 22:37

Kate is back!

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 20/12/2024 19:58

I can’t remember this one at all. But I know I’ve read it

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 20/12/2024 22:38

Ooh I remembered it in the last five minutes. The previous adaptation with Roy Marsden was more detailed and I think Alice was a proofreader unless I’m thinking of something else.

Clawdy · 21/12/2024 22:39

Confused by the end. Who was the guy with the blonde wig?

IwantToRetire · 22/12/2024 01:39

I thought these last 2 programmes were good, but in some ways the plotline was confusing.

I am sure I had read the book, but this didn't ring any bells at all, so just enjoyed for itself.

More so than ever Dalgliesh just sits there silently looking on, and maybe makes a few remarks. In fact for a lead character he has very little air time!

Found it a bit strange that it went from being about a serial killer to some sort of spy thriller. I thought that part of the plot was weak.

The Kate story was all a bit neat, and I suppose it had to end with Dalgliesh at last following up on the invitation to get in touch with Emma(?) or whatever her name is.

Interesting little touches of bringing in Thatcher references, and suspect with the number of murders it would have taken the Yorkshire Ripper off the front pages.

I hope they do another series.

Have just checked. There are 14 books in total so the series as a whole must have used most of them.

Hmm

I'm quite enjoying it but some of the dialogue is 😳
"Where are we at with..." no-one said that in the 70s.
Also someone said "cool" which was common in the 60s then came back MANY years later.
I'm sure there's lots more although it doesn't put me off.

banivani · 05/01/2025 17:42

What I quite like about this series is that they have picked up on something that always struck me about PD James’ novels, and that is their feeling of being sort of out of time. They are often set somewhere where people are being old fashioned, not with the times. Like the nursing school which is mentioned as being not modern, with old fashioned values and uniforms, or the weird monk one. This works surprisingly well with a more colour-blind approach to casting and tweaking the story lines, they’re sort of set in the 70s and yet not. I think it’s well done.

Sadly I don’t much fancy your man as Dalgliesh. He just makes this face most of the time. 😐😑

Abra1t · 05/01/2025 18:04

Yes, I loved PDJ but her books are very much the product of an imagination that was forged in the 1930s, when she was growing up. She has High Tory principles and a lot of compassion for people, but characters like Dalgliesh have a restrained, almost courtly take on life, which is attractive but certainly different from how a modern fictional detective would operate. The settings are 'crucibles' operating under their own rules, cut off from the world, emotions simmering away.
