I wonder if you could help me. We are doing a family quiz at Christmas this year and everyone has been given a round to take charge of. I've been allocated Film/TV. I have done an Only Connect style connecting wall containing 16 films (four groups of four connected films) and wanted some guinea pigs to test it on. Could you have a go at solving it and working out the connections and let me know if it's too hard/too easy? I'll reveal the answers in due course. Thank you!

I got the measurements and Matt Damon films. Then guessed that it must be cowboy films (from knowing 2 of them), but then ran out of guesses!

I don't think you need to have seen the films to be able to do it.

The only thing it's missing is some red herrings - I think all the films could only fit into their 'own' category, which is where it differs from OC.

Could you print them out on small cards so people can rearrange them? It would be hard to do without being able to visualise it.

BraveMaeve · 02/12/2024 11:53

Got it, very good! Nice amount of red herrings also.

imokithink · 02/12/2024 11:55

Ahh thanks for the feedback all, much appreciated! Glad you like it. I hoped the Tom Hanks red herring would be spotted! I think most of the family will get the concept as if they've ever been at my house on a Monday they are forced to watch Only Connect 🤞 I think I'll probably give it to them on paper and they can complete it throughout the day and can look up the films if they aren't sure about any of them.

Trains? Matt Damon? Cowboys?

This is as far as I've got !

Isitfridayyetsophie · 02/12/2024 12:10

I’m looking at it again knowing people have said trains, cowboys and Matt Damon. I know the polar express is a train and Matt Damon is in the bourne identity, can’t identify any others that would link with that or a single cowboy film 🤣 13 of those films I’ve not clue what happened and 7 I’ve never even heard of! Films are quite possibly my worst subject!

Noodlesnotstrudels · 02/12/2024 12:14

🤣🤣🤣 I did not get the connection for "fluff" at all. Well done!

PetShopGals · 02/12/2024 12:17

Matt Damon
Imperial units of measurement

LookItsMeAgain · 02/12/2024 12:53

I haven't (on purpose) read the whole thread so I'm going to go with

The Polar Express, The Green Mile, Saving Private Ryan, Toy Story - Films linked by Tom Hanks

The Martian, The Bourne Identity, Brokeback Mountain, Ocean's 11 - Films linked by Matt Damon

Then I'm drawing on the brain power of my fellow team members 😁

LookItsMeAgain · 02/12/2024 12:56

The Hateful Eight, Happy Feet, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Headwig and the Angry Inch - Linked by emotions??

LookItsMeAgain · 02/12/2024 13:00

That leaves Snowpiercer, The Darjeeling Ltd, The Taking of Pelham 123 and The Whole 9 Yards - Types of cocktails??? (really can't find a link between those which means I mucked up earlier - not surprising at all) 😁

The Hateful Eight, Happy Feet, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Headwig and the Angry Inch - Linked by emotions??

Oooooooooooooooooh. I should have got that.

Oooooooooooooooooh. I should have got that.

I'm not sure that's right though - we'll only know when @imokithink comes back to give us the actual groupings that she made.

I'm not sure that's right though - we'll only know when @imokithink comes back to give us the actual groupings that she made.

So Tom Hanks was a red herring group. There are 4 Tom Hanks films but if you put them in a group the remaining groups won't work 😀 and the same with the emotions, I hadn't spotted that could be a group so an unintentional red herring there!

The groups are as follows:

Snowpiercer, The Polar Express, The Taking of Pelham 123 and The Darjeeling Limited - all involve trains
Saving Private Ryan, Ocean's 11, The Martian, The Bourne Identity - Matt Damon films
The Hateful Eight, Brokeback Mountain, Toy Story, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - all feature cowboys
Happy Feet, The Green Mile, The Whole Nine Yards, Hedwig and the Angry Inch - length measurements in the titles

I think some of the films are too obscure

I definitely don't!
If you like films and Only Connect, it's very doable. (And also fun. Nice work, OP!)

Sidebeforeself · 02/12/2024 14:04

@JingleB Well, OP asked for opinions and that was mine.

P00hsticks · 02/12/2024 14:15

I found it too difficult (even though I love Only Connect) because there were several things there that meant nothing to me (specifically all of the first column apart from Saving Private Ryan). but them I can't remember the last time I went to the cinema or watched a film at home....

I think it's very much going to depend on their knowledge of films,,,,

LookItsMeAgain · 02/12/2024 14:29

I think the films you selected were good but there really only needs to be one red herring in the 16 but there were more in your selection. The suggestion by @FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant where something is hidden in the clues (so something with Smile, Grinch, Lanyard, Crowsfoot) where the imperial measurment is hidden in the word might be good.* *

Thanks for the feedback! Clearly you share my mature sense of humour 😇

LoquaciousPineapple · 02/12/2024 18:25

I thought it was pretty easy, sorry OP. But I am a religious Connections player on the NYTimes so maybe my brain is more attuned to these puzzles' quirks than other people.
