I'm staying with and looking after my mum following an operation and after TV ideas. We both loved Breaking Bad and The West Wing. After something meaty but not slow... No sex! Nothing about difficult mother/daughter relationships Grin

Ideally on netflix but could be convinced to try another service!

Did you watch Ludwig? I find David Mitchell a bit annoying IRL but found this series brilliant and slightly mourned the loss of it.

Obviously, if you haven't yet, all of the following well known series: Call of Duty, The Bridge, Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax (off the back of Happy Valley).

These are all crime related though - not really politics or drugs. Did you watch Better Call Saul? My DH liked Breaking Bad, and that as a result. He also quite liked that other series about Pablo Escobar.

I watched Mare of Easttown with my mum - we both enjoyed it and there was nothing too unsuitable in it.

I was going to suggest Billions, but there are a couple of BDSM scenes which will be toe curling to watch with a parent! In fact pretty much everything decent we've watched has sex scenes shoehorned in, in an almost tick box exercise. The Diplomat (and the second series has CJ from The West Wing), The Jackal, both ha ve sex scenes . Slow Horses is very, very good.
Madam Secretary is fairly wholesome but lightweight.
I do miss The West Wing.

I would recommend Ted Lasso if you can get it. Might be worth taking the free Apple TV subscription. It's not anything like Breaking Bad but I binged it while at home with whooping cough and it was an absolute joy. I have never been so invested in a TV show before.

Suits
Dexter
Start up
The drop out

Currently watching Sneaky Pete which is very good, and created and stars Bryan Cranston (breaking bads Walter White)

DarkAndTwisties · 02/12/2024 09:28

Madam Secretary?

The Good Wife is good - there's a bit of sex though. Not so much explicit scenes, but in the storylines (eg it starts with a scandal involving her politician husband sleeping with prostitutes, and there's some audio of that that gets leaked)

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 02/12/2024 09:29

For West Wing fans, The Newsroom is essential viewing.

FrenchandSaunders · 02/12/2024 09:30

We recently watched the whole of Ted Lasso, bit late to the party, it was fabulous. Perfect mother and daughter viewing IMO.

FrenchandSaunders · 02/12/2024 09:30

And if you're getting Apple TV ... Bad Sisters.

ConcernedOfClapham · 02/12/2024 09:36

Just finished 'A man on the inside' on Netflix, and we loved it. First couple of episodes are laugh-out-loud funny, then it develops into a wonderful character study, and ends in a wave of emotion. I can't recommend it highly enough.

It does deal with dementia, which affects me greatly as my nan had that and it was painful to see her slipping away slowly, but the show handles it in a sensitive and moving way.

Finished it last night, and holding back tears as I write this. I can't recommend it highly enough.

BBC player has quite a lot of stuff at the moment and it’s free.
I agree about Ludwig, and then Death in Paradise, Return to paradise, Shakespeare and Hattaway, Magpie murders, etc etc more historical like Wolf hall and War and piece.
It also has various light Christmassy films and old Christmas specials which might be nice.

pizzaHeart · 02/12/2024 09:41

And someone mentioned Suits - it’s on BBC player at the moment too.

AndCoronets · 02/12/2024 09:53

The Bear is very good, although sweary and very intense. Also The Queens Gambit, which is stunning.

Seeline · 02/12/2024 09:56

If West Wing was liked, you could try Designated Survivor? White House based.

There's also Homeland, but that might be a bit more gritty (and I think there was some sex, definitely violence).

House of Cards

Designated Survivor was cancelled without a proper ending though, I'm still gutted about that!

Seaside hotel on channel 4 Walther Presents. 6 series about hotel guests and staff in Denmark from 1930s through to wwII. Lovely if you don’t mind subtitles (or speak fluent Danish). There are actually 10 series but for some reason only 6 are available at present.
