Does anybody actually enjoy terminal illness storylines on soaps?

I’m thinking Paul on coronation street most recently but I absolutely hate long drawn out death storylines. It isn’t even that I find them distressing as the voiceover tells me I might (!) I find them boring. I stopped regularly watching coronation street when Hayley cropper had cancer, but they seem to be a regular occurrence on soaps and of course they are part of real life but I hate it! Does anyone actually find them ‘good’ storylines as in, you get invested, want to watch, feel for the characters? Or am I just heartless?

Yeah it's all too much doom on gloom on the soaps these days

Especially with corrie - what's wrong with a bit of humour and light hearteness

This is my no.1 reason why my dc/teens were never permitted to watch soaps, apart from them being a ridiculous waste of time, because they glamorise illness.

And youth then get the impression that to be ill and needy, and attract pity and sympathy, and have everyone feel sorry for you, is something to aim for!

When in reality the opposite is true, and people have more sympathy and are more compassionate towards you when you are self-contained, independent and self-reliant.

I think i get what you're saying here

Tv shows glamorise suffering, end of

And some music. There's nothing glamorous about always having problems or being depressed 😔

Absolutely!

You put it better than I did.

Also I was trying to say that they inculcate a sense that constantly being in trouble and having emotional crises and being a victim is somehow pleasant and admirable.

There are hardly any characters demonstrating normalcy, calmness, dependability, kindness, resilience, self sacrifice and boring stability!

I think because they are on so often these days and there are only a finite number of storylines available, so it's easy to just thrown in a death/murder/assault or other traumatic event. ,I remember them being far lighter and more entertaining back when they were on less.

They really piss me off most of the time becuase the scriptwriter and actors read a leaflet on something and then proclaim themselves as experts and representatives. Meanwhile in the real world..........

I think there's enough doom and gloom in the world, i really struggle sometimes. I can happily miss an episode nowadays.

I miss the good old days when Ian Beale cried on Lou's shoulder because he wanted to be a chef and his Dad didn't want him to be one.
