Not sure if this will be like mum

Which was fab

Starts tonight

The new BBC series sees bit-part actor Richard (Greg McHugh) travel from London back to his family home in the Scottish Highlands to see his recently-widowed father Ken.

But he soon realises his dad might be in need of a bit more full-time help - even if he disagrees. Scottish comedy great Gregor Fisher stars in the new comedy series

Only Child sees Richard Pritchard return to his family home in Scotland to help his father Ken, who recently became widowed.

The series sees the pair tackle domestic and inter-generational differences and neighbourly squabbles.

Not that Ken would agree, of course, but that statement is pretty much true about anything.

An eccentric, strong-willed technophobe, Ken is set in his ways, leaving Richard worrying about his dad growing old."

6 parts on weekly

I really like how Gregor Fisher plays it, he's a really good comedy actor but this was also quite touching. Greg McHugh is good as the son as well I thought as he's exasperated with his dad but also obviously loves him so much. I was pleased it wasn't just played for cheap laughs. I don't think it will be as good as Mum, but it has a similar character driven sort of set up, where you care about the people in it maybe?

Londonnight · 25/11/2024 17:47

I enjoyed this. I accidently came across it when I was scrolling for things to record. I don't remember seeing it advertised anywhere. But it was good, and i am looking forward to the next episode.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/11/2024 19:52

Yes not a comedy the way mum was

But I think it could be good

Not watched this yet, no.

Seems quite a realistic portrayal of caring for a parent with early stage dementia but can't decide if it's meant to be a comedy or a drama! It's watchable though.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/11/2024 11:06

Yes think that's the diff as obv mum she wasn't having dementia

I've watched the first three episodes and I've enjoyed each one so far.

Gregor Fisher is always good and the way that Greg McHugh delivers his lines gives the show a gentle humour. I never could stand shows where the acting was over the top like Bread and Keeping Up Appearances.

For anyone that's ever tried to look after aging relatives the scene with the remote controls was really touching but still quite funny.

RaraRachael · 03/12/2024 12:04

Watched the first episode and that was enough. It's supposedly set where I live but so obviously isn't - don't know why they do this. Normally like the two actors but it just didn't do a lot for me.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/12/2024 18:27

It's ok. Watched last nights e3

I found this when scrolling through iPlayer and watched it all - thought it was pretty good overall. Some episodes better than others, but generally not over the top as PP mentions and quite poignant in parts with some subtle humour thrown in. Dad and son are great casting together.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/12/2024 09:40

Yes I'm still watching

Sometimes funny
