On an ordinary day, Claire Kutty, a secondary school English teacher in her early forties, hears a low, rumbling sound while driving her daughter Ashley to their school.

This innocuous noise starts to cause Claire migraines, nosebleeds, insomnia and even visions. No obvious source or medical cause can be found – and no-one else can hear it.

4 episodes of 45 minutes - not sure if they will all be on line.

BBC One - The Listeners, Series 1, Episode 1

When Claire starts hearing an incessant rumbling sound, no-one seems able to help.

Ooh, I hope it's all available on iplayer, I need something to binge. Am in danger of peaking too early on Christmas films and specials!

Sweepsthepillowclean · 19/11/2024 19:09

Sorts tonight out! Thank you!

IwantToRetire · 19/11/2024 19:10

I'm thinking its a radio play I listened to a while ago - in which case I know the story.

But will still be tuning in.

And glad if all on iPlayer, as I have converted to binge watching as I cant hold story lines in my head with a 7 day break!

I haven't seen Rebecca hall in anything since ' starter for ten ' ( film )

This has got a sinister feel to it.

westisbest1982 · 19/11/2024 21:31

Yes it’s all on iPlayer.

Just placemarking so I can watch and comment later. Rebecca Hall is always fabulous.?

Sidebeforeself · 19/11/2024 21:41

Watching this because I have this exact problem..its driving me mad

Norugratsatall · 19/11/2024 21:57

I have tinnitus caused by Covid so found this a bit triggering and unsettling but weirdly compulsive viewing.

EsmaCannonball · 19/11/2024 22:05

I heard the hum for about two years. I find it hard to concentrate on anything if there is the slightest noise distraction so for the first few weeks it drove me absolutely mad. At first I thought it was the deep bass sound of somebody playing music or partying nearby, then the motorway which is about two miles from my house (which I had never heard a peep from before), then that it was some kind of roadworks or construction noise, then noise from an industrial estate, then noise from phone masts.

It was only when I went to stay in a quiet little village miles away from where I live and still heard it that I realised it wasn't something near my house. Then I discovered I could hear it anywhere I went. Once I'd established it wasn't being caused by some idiot's anti-social behaviour or by some kind of industrial noise, and therefore that my irritation wasn't being caused by someone else's selfishness or lack of consideration, I was able to be more accepting of it, then I became more used to it, and then sometimes I actually found it a bit comforting. A few months ago I realised I had stopped hearing it.

It didn't cause me headaches or nosebleeds, though. Neither did I start hanging around schoolboys.

iloveshetlandponies · 19/11/2024 22:07

Ooo I want to watch this , looks good

KekseKekse · 19/11/2024 22:27

"It didn't cause me headaches or nosebleeds, though. Neither did I start hanging around schoolboys."

Putting his phone number with his name in her phone, picking up Kyle near the school where other schoolkids nearly saw them, leaving her unlocked phone lying around and a message from him pops up, answering a call from him late at night without checking daughter or husband isn't nearby listening in......

Enough!

If the stupidities of the main character keep on like this I may have to stop watching. 🙄 Or better still just go straight to the last episode on BBC i-player

Those that say the story may first have been a radio play, was it any good?

Printedword · 19/11/2024 22:48

Rebecca Hall was interviewed in The Observer last Sunday. It’s interesting to read and mostly about the film she recently directed - Passing. I did struggle with the interviewer stating that Hall had been perceived as an ‘English rose’ earlier in her career. Not quite my perception of her image at that point.

the80sweregreat · 20/11/2024 10:27

Wasn't there a village somewhere in the uk they had a noise of some kind or a humming sound ? Not sure what it was in the end

Rogerstreasures · 20/11/2024 12:27

I thought the first one was tedious, I switched it off.

Sidebeforeself · 20/11/2024 13:35

It was ridiculous. I wont be watching any more. The way she kept everything a secret was bizarre.

Nitgel · 20/11/2024 14:33

Waste of time tv. The subject is interesting the tv program not.

IwantToRetire · 20/11/2024 18:24

That was me, and although a similar set up, story line was different.

Unless they've really rejigged it.

I'm quite interested in the story line, but I think the pairing up of the teacher and the pupil is just intrusive. (Unless there is a real plot twist!) And raises so many issues as outlined by PP.

Just why do that? Is it supposed to make it edgy?

I find Rebacca Hall a bit mannered, and her character doesn't seem that sympathetic, although as someone who has intermittent tinitus can see how you could get obsessed but to the point of blanking everyone out.

So maybe aren't being that drawn into the story as I might have been.

I'm 2 episodes in, so 2 to go.

Me too.

I was going to post on here if anyone has got to the end can you please explain.

I thought the last episode was just absurd. (wont say why as a bit of a spoiler)

Is it about reacting to being squashed into a way of life that is expected of you, but isn't actually self fulfilling? Hmm

Augustus40 · 22/11/2024 07:54

A bit bizarre. That is my opinion having watched it all now.

Mumteedum · 22/11/2024 08:03

I watched it all. I like the concept but it wasn't handled well. I felt like this would have made a good 90 min arty film. Didn't feel like a series. The husband was very one dimensional. The other actors felt like they belonged in an episode of Doctors or something.

Shame. Good bits but very clunky and towards the end was beyond belief.
