I FINALLY found out what's wrong with 'In The Night Garden'

Not letting dd watch it more than once or twice, ever, it always went over my head why some people frowned on the names a little.

Was in hospital with dd today and a girl on the opposite bed, only a toddler, was watching it and 'Macca Pacca' (or however the hell they spell it) came on and she joyously shouted "Mummy, it's smack a !"

The poor mother went white, I tried desperately not to laugh but NOW I understand all the hush-hush frowning

I've honestly not seen that one. I think it's pretty sad if a toddler has heard such a racist term enough to repeat it.

I think anything Pinky Ponk related is deliberately rude, mind. ;)

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 25/04/2008 23:56

I don't think the child would have had to heard it to say it though it was just the way it came out the childs mouth. God dd has said things that I know she will never have heard but she actually meant to say something else.

The pinky poks are the gassies family I have ever seen.

DaDaDa · 26/04/2008 00:00

DS calls him 'Packy' too (and has never heard the word eleswhere). Cue us: 'Pa-KA! Pa-KA!'

There's nothing wrong with Night Garden though, it's great. It's time to go...

amytheearwaxbanisher · 26/04/2008 00:01

my parents took ds for a night and i sent some dvds with him to settle him in a strange place,on picking him up the next day my dad said you know there is a thing called mather faker[mother f*kr] on his dvd pmsl at that.on pointing out to dh that some mners thought macca pacca is a bunch of boobs he didnt put ds`s macca pacca toy down all day

ChocolateRockingHorse · 26/04/2008 00:04

The Pinky Ponk is a vehicle not a family.. as is the Ninky Nonk!

DrippingLizzie · 26/04/2008 00:54

Methinks you mean the Pontipines

Blueskythinker · 26/04/2008 01:15

Or the rarely seen Wottingers. ITNG is great.

theUrbanNixie · 26/04/2008 01:53

my friend's ds calls Macca Pacca "Bugger Bugger" and shouted it all round Tescos on one memorable occasion.

madamez · 26/04/2008 02:17

My Ds, when jabbering about the Night Garden, sometimes refers to the Ninky Nonk as The Niggy Nog, with absolutely no racist inferences. Kids rhyme words in a nonsense way (Ds once got a bit confused with a book that had a page about frogs and ducks, you can undoubtedly imagine...)

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 26/04/2008 08:49

Yes pontipines is what I meant had a few glasses of wine last night so just grateful I couls type

wobblyknicks · 26/04/2008 11:14

ouryve - from the look on the mother's face and the way the words do sound so similar, I honestly don't think it was reciting something she'd already heard, I think it was just a child coming out with something they thought sounded very near and only an adult would realise the difference.

DD used to do it with words that sounded too much like f**k but I didn't react and luckily she never repeated it in public

Don't think there's anything inherently wrong with kid's programmes, just wish they'd spend more time seeing names from a kids point of view, but better still - ENUNCIATE! Takes me a couple of listens sometimes to get what they're saying.

Love the frogs/ducks confusion madamez

Bit the pontipines don't make farty noises.. the Pinky Ponk does!

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 26/04/2008 15:21

Yes they do when they are counted out of their wee house they spin on the spot and fart, honest. My childless sister wets herself at the Night Garden when she is here and she kindly pointed that out.

eenybeeny · 26/04/2008 22:43

hehe we love this thread! (we being me and DH not me and the Queen) Our son 20 months when you ask him what noise his bottom makes, he makes a popping noise with his mouth and then says "Pines" (me me me me me me me me - you know, the other noise they make!) because that is what he calls the pontypines! Although some friends of ours who dont have children think Iggle Piggle looks like a murderer. Somewhat unsettling DS is sleeping with an IgglePiggle doll right now. I assume he is ok we havent heard any screaming over the monitor.

EyeballsintheSky · 26/04/2008 22:45

Wattingers and Pontypines are the reason I dd watches ITNG

wobblyknicks · 26/04/2008 23:04

Haha - farting little people? I'm starting to rethink avoiding ITNG now

And after googling him, Iggle Piggle DOES look like a serial killer, although judging by the blanket clamped to him he's likely to suffocate his victims so don't be fooled by no screaming

wow thanks wobbly I shall go check on DS now!

wobblyknicks · 26/04/2008 23:14

Glad to help - we all know the greatest risk to kids is from psychotic soft toys these days, just remember the documentary "Child's Play"
