Well done Ugo, but probably not how he would have wanted to win.

JaneJeffer · 02/11/2024 18:27

Oh Karen isn't happy and he seems to be in pain too

Well done Ugo. Hope Karen is ok.

Sascha trying to play everything down Grin

Who collapsed at match point?

Just saw the last 5 minutes of the second doubles semi final. Well done to Glasspool and Pavlasek, who I think were last minute alternates, beating Porn Tache and Dodgy Tache in straight sets.

Raahh · 02/11/2024 20:23

kazza it was Karen- he had had treatment on his thigh, and as he went down to 15-40 on his own serve, he seemed to just give way.

At the net it was a bit frosty too because (apparently) Karen didn't like Ugo's celebrations when it was obvious Karen was injured. At least that was waht the commentators summised was being said. Ugo wasnt particularly ott- and it's understandable he was caught up in the moment. But Karen did not seem too happy (as well as being in a lot of pain, I think).

Porn Tache and Dodgy Tache

The Aussie blokes do like their facial hair.

The women might tooGrin

Lots of hate on socials for Ugo and his celebrations. I agree it was a bit unnecessary to celebrate so enthusiastically after Karen was injured, but it seemed like he was just playing in a way that was very emotional and, well, French. You can’t just turn off the tap when you’re all fired up emotionally. I’m still hoping he wins today, but I think Sascha is more likely to.

Ice that was my feeling about Ugo- I don't think it was at all deliberate- he had just made the biggest final of his career, at one of the biggest home events. I think it was an automatic reaction, fuelled by the emotion and the crowd. Be a shame if this win is sullied by this- Karen was obviously in pain and disappointed- I mean, nearly every player gee thems themselves on after winning a point with a fist pump or a vamos, and the end celebration was hardly a shirt ripping, Djok-like roar- now that would have been disrespectful.

Karen was playing the crowd as much as he was playing Ugo, and that will have affected a lot of what went on, in the moment.

poor Ugo. Sad

JaneJeffer · 03/11/2024 11:05

I didn't even notice his celebration so it couldn't have been that OTT Confused I think Karen was just being salty!

Raahh · 03/11/2024 12:06

I agree. I think at the end Jane he did a salute? I can't even remember properly.

I'm sure if Karen hadn't been injured and had got through the match, none of it would have registered. It does smack of sour grapes- which is a shame, he's had a good few weeks. Which may be part of the problem- he probably fancied his chances in a final that didn't involve a French man!

Raahh · 03/11/2024 13:03

Iga playing Barbora in Riyadh- Barbora probably considered a bit of an out sider since she isn't in the 'top 8' but there due to winning a slam. But she's started well.

Raahh · 03/11/2024 13:05

They've just said, that the crowds are very poor. It's not even as though it's an 'early' match- it's 4pm in Riyadh.

JaneJeffer · 03/11/2024 13:07

I have it on but I'm not really paying attention. Barbora seems to be playing in her nightie.

It is a bit odd, I like the colour, not sure about the scalloped edge Grin

Raahh · 03/11/2024 13:42

Not going well then for Iga- but the way these round robin things work, you can lose matches and still go through and I can never get my head around them Grin

JaneJeffer · 03/11/2024 14:01

I think the location has put people off!

OP posts:
Raahh · 03/11/2024 14:03

I think so, Jane, I don't really like the whole Saudi Arabia thing at all.

Well- this has turned around. Barbora had chances for 4-0 and now it's 3-3.

Fizzywinegum · 03/11/2024 14:03

Poor Ugo - hope he's OK - I didn't see the match so can't really comment on his celebration - I hope he wins the whole thing

I'm annoyed that Sky seem to have abandoned Paris for the atmosphere-less WTA finals on their main channel - I'm not sure if I can get it on the red button (not sure if our Sky is totally legit - ahem Grin) so it serves me right I suppose but I would have liked to watch the final

I don't really like round robin tournaments - I never really know what's going off with them!

Raahh · 03/11/2024 14:07

I've managed to find Ugo and Sascha.

Now, I know Sascha is tall (how tall again is he exactly? Wink) but he looked huge next to Aurelie and the girl doing the coin toss.

The place is rowdy. Lets hope Sascha isn't feeling precious about a partisan crowd.

JaneJeffer · 03/11/2024 14:08

Looking at the end of the match again I think it was the fist pump after Karen collapsed that pissed him off. I don't know if we saw that on tv because they zoomed in on Karen.

Sky Sports + Fizzy don't mention the dodgy box
