I haven't watched it but I've read the book (lots of times )
I'd have cast Jamie-Lee O'Donnel (Michelle from Derry Girls) as Taggie , she's got the cloudy dark hair ( green/blue eyes but hey !) and she's 37 but looks younger . Only downside is she tiny , RCB would need to walk round in a trench

Does Cameron wear The Dress to Patricks 21st ?

SPOLIER SPOILER

Forgive me, I haven’t read the whole thread so it may be that someone else has mentioned this….but did you catch the “secret” that Declan threw on the fire? Makes me think that S2 will head into Polo territory…maybe even giving us a S3?

I haven’t been on MN for years, but I do recall that one of my favourite ever threads was us trying to cast Rivals should it ever be filmed. Well, here we are…so my personal thoughts on this:

Rupert. Sorry, no. I can look beyond the lack of blond hair, but I don’t find this actor appealing at all. I think the part was written well & captured the essence of Rupert with dialogue etc, but at no point did I look at him and see RCB. I couldn’t make that work in my head. He’s a very good actor, but miscast, imo.

Taggie. Meh. But that’s inevitable. Taggie, as written, was not really human…at least, who has ever met a human like her? She was perfect - “an angel” as Jilly describes her in the cast of characters at the front of the book. Very difficult to translate to the screen without making us all reach for the puke bucket.

Maud. Perfect. I don’t agree that she’d been domesticated by Declan, btw - he was not that kind of man. She had aged out of her previous acting roles and was too vain to want to play middle aged parts. In the book she was pretty awful, but we understood that it was her insecurity that made her so.

Same with Cameron, the most insecure person in the whole book - and the most abused. Making her black was a stroke of genius - being a New Yorker in 80s Cotswolds was fish out of water enough, but a black one in the whitest part of the UK? It added another layer of vulnerability, I think. I don’t like the way they dressed her, though - she wasn’t an 80s dresser at all, she was ahead of her time in that respect and that doesn’t show.

Declan. Almost perfect but AT isn’t quite old enough to be the bleary-eyed, bone tired, slightly shabby Declan O’Hara imo, but he’s close. And so fucking sexy.

Tony. Well, DT can act any part he wants with total authenticity, so he pulls it off. Rufus Sewell would have been closer to JC’s Tony - who looked like a mafia hood by description.

James Verekar. Brilliant & spot on. And for those making the Partridge comparison, bear in mind that JV was created long before Coogan showed up.

Lizzie - Katherine Parkinson was inspired casting. Jilly always provides us with one everywoman character in amongst the nutters - in Riders it was Tory, in Rivals it’s Lizzie and in Polo it’s Daisy. Loved KP in this.

Freddie. I was a bit 😲 when I heard they’d cast Danny Dyer - but he was lovely in this. It worked.

Valerie. Nailed it - so funny. I was amazed they went so far as to film “Freddie’s lonely act” but mercifully we were spared her neatly clipped bush onscreen!

Monica. That actress is always brilliant and is here - but I think they’ve made Monica a bit too vulnerable. I don’t recall her giving a shit about what Tony got up to, so long as it didn’t scare the horses or dogs. She was written as a type rather than fully fleshed character & was quite minor in the book, so maybe the producers just did her a favour and gave her an actual personality, which is fair enough.

Caitlin. We haven’t seen her big storyline yet, which I won’t spoil for those who haven’t read the book, but the casting seems fine.

Sarah Stratton. Emily Atak is really watchable and funny, but Sarah in the book was a little less dynamic, I think. Cashmere bosomed rather than shoulder pads and stilettos, iirc, but whatever…Emily is more fun, so it works. And they’ve been really kind to Paul, whose midlife crisis was way more hilariously pathetic in the book.

I really, really appreciate how hard they’ve tried to get the essence of the novel, and Jilly Cooper in general, right. The wrong Rupe (imo) aside, they totally succeeded and I so enjoyed bingeing this. The “biblical heat of her burning bush” was such an affectionate nod towards Jilly (in cameo) and her incomparable prose - the writers know why we fans have loved these books and they don’t ever sneer at us for doing so. They love them too.

For those wondering about S2…there has to be one. You don’t leave a character bleeding out on the floor and not come back to finish the story. And I think the clue in the fireplace suggests Polo is coming. So maybe we need to discuss casting for that….Ricky, Chessie, Daisy, Perdita and swoon Luke. Ideas? 😂😂

(Sorry this was so long).

Great round up Beth although I differ on Alex Hassell.

Re: Series 2 Casting Luke is 100% more important to me than RCB!

VeryLittleOwl · 20/10/2024 17:19

Who on earth would they get to play Red? Can't think of any stunning-looking actors who are the right age. Eddie Redmayne's aged out of that role.

VeryLittleOwl · 20/10/2024 17:19

Mind you, if they can make RCB dark-haired, they can make Red not red-haired I suppose....

ChessieFL · 20/10/2024 17:40

I think Polo would be be very hard/expensive to make, with all the polo matches. A lot of it is set in Argentina too - not sure how easy that would be to replicate in the UK but location filming might be expensive.

ExquisiteIyDecorated · 20/10/2024 17:40

I’m one who has never read it, I was 21 when it came out but was more into spies and thrillers at the time and my mum never had them either so the whole world of JC is new to me (although obviously I have heard about them over the years). So I don’t mind spoilers for this season too much but would rather not have them beyond that please.

I’ve just finished Ep 3, obviously I don’t have any pre-conceptions about the characters and I think the casting is pretty good (I’ve never seen any of the actors apart from DT in anything else either). The whole 80s vibe is brilliant, it is making my jaw drop in places about things that would be totally unacceptable now (and frankly were then to many). I have struggled a bit in places to work out who everyone is and what their relationships are to one another (business as well as personal) but I’m getting there and I think it’s a fantastic show overall.

Tooty78 · 20/10/2024 17:41

Re' a second series, it was mentioned in the Daily Mail 'that Disney+ appear to be on board, even though they haven't announced an official commission yet'
So fingers crossed and judging by social media it's a hit, there are three different articles in the Daily Mail about it, oh and the word 'tumescent' made an appearance.😆

I think Rivals is proving enough of a hit that the budget for Polo wouldn't be a problem.

Agree Polo would be very expensive to make given the locations (Rutshire/Argentina/Miami) and the number of horses/riders etc I imagine the insurance would be astronomical.

I expect that why TMWMHJ was made instead.
But I really hope they make it anyway!

bookworm14 · 20/10/2024 17:57

I hope they get as far as Appassionata, which is one of my favourites. I adore the piano competition and Rupert accepting that Marcus is gay. 😭

Well, it’s Disney so maybe expense would be less of a concern for them…but you’re right in how expansive Polo actually is. It certainly couldn’t be done in a few episodes.

I was thinking though that Polo & Rivals run concurrent to each other timewise, at least in places, so maybe they’ll come up with a clever way of weaving the two stories together and leaving the bulk of Polo for S3, if there is one. It’s too long since I read the books to know if that would work.

But it’s clear that there’s not enough storyline from Rivals left to fill up 8 hours so 🤷‍♀️

Most important question, though…who would you want for Chessie? 😂

DanielaDressen · 20/10/2024 18:08

Just need a few sunny days and shoot all the polo scenes at Cirencester polo club pretending to be Argentina? 🤷‍♀️

Would Sam Heughan be too old? He can ride a horse quite well.

Shadesofscarlett · 20/10/2024 18:16

Who would play ranaldini and perdita. I think Sam Heughan should play Luke.

The New Year's Eve party seemed wildly improbable when shown on screen-taggie doing a sit down meal for that many people? Whereas in the book i never dwelled on it.

I missed the marquee from the book party, simply for the marquee folk going around checking on their erections due to the storm.

TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack · 20/10/2024 18:18

They could only shoot on one direction at Cowdray. There’s a great big ruin on one side which isn’t very Argentinian. 😁

cathyandclaire · 20/10/2024 18:26

Sam Heughan a good call for Luke - he's 44 but looks younger, also James Norton ( 39)

cathyandclaire · 20/10/2024 18:28

Maybe they could fake Argentina in Spain? Less chance of luck grass, rain and puddles! polovalley.com/

DanielaDressen · 20/10/2024 18:33

James Norton would be excellent.

DanielaDressen · 20/10/2024 18:35

They’d have to make Perdita older surely? Both in character age and age of the actress. Can’t be having a 14yo throwing herself at guys.

DanielaDressen · 20/10/2024 18:37

Had to google to see who I was thinking of but Emma Myers would be good for Perdita www.imdb.com/name/nm3528821/ www.imdb.com/name/nm3528821/]]]]
