I'm just watching this and wonder how in earth these couples can afford these mortgages. £450k the guy is an electrician not sure about the girl though.

That older couple were miserable as sin. If their London house was so amazing they must have got a packet for it, so throw a bit more money in the pot! The fact that they were renting away down in Dundrum (while it’s a lovely wee spot) suggests they’re tightwads imo

The woman was Scottish and you know what the stereotype about Scots is (even though I love them dearly, so no offense to anyone)!

Meredusoleil · 24/10/2024 21:53

I think they should have just stayed put where they were in London if their house was all that 🤷 Or was it the area they wanted to change?

Meredusoleil · 24/10/2024 21:55

We had a similar issue when we were considering moving about 5 years ago. We wanted the same or better house in a different area, but (1) our budget wasn't high enough and (2) the new area wasn't as nice as our current area. In the end, we didn't move at all!

Wtaf? Both managed to find a property to buy by themselves by cutting a bedroom! Talk about wasting Phil and Kirstie's time or what!

I'm really starting to think there are no serious buyers out there wanting to go on this show anymore and they are scraping the barrel with the participants they are getting 🙄

I remember getting desperate when we were looking, I even started filling out the application for LLL. We had seen all the houses in our budget(over 60), some were probably perfectly good just not for us.

We did the thing first time buyers were expected to do in the 00s bought a flat then move up the property ladder. We were losing out to first time buyers who wanted the big home straight away and didn't have anything to sell. Add in being in a South East Commuter town and we were being stuffed.

In the end we upped our budget (and stamp duty was frozen) and got the right house.

I do find on things like this, A Place in the Sun, and Escape to the Country that more often than not they don't end up buying any of them.

LaPalmaLlama · 26/10/2024 20:58

Yeah the older couple were tricky and seemed to get hung up on v minor things ( cracked floor tile??). However I do wonder if that comes with being on a fixed income and you don’t want to end up with a surprise fixer upper. I suspect they were planning to live on the difference between what they sold for and would buy for, but hadn’t really adjusted their expectations in terms of what they’d be prepared to accept to get that margin. With the younger woman I thought that was quite a good process in that she figured out what her actual non negotiables were - sometimes you have to look at a few to realise that. We’re a week into ownership of a home that I’d have ruled out on paper.

Just watched episode 2
Quite liked the house that the single woman ended up with

This post cropped up on my feed and funnily enough it was after being on another post about inheritance tax and the regional pricing came up of house prices.

Im in the SE and just about everyone I know bought house with a deposit from grandparents/parents which in a lot of cases was inheritance or early inheritance. I was trying to explain that wages aren’t much more down here especially in public sector, nhs, retail, teaching etc
Without that inheritance I know people who would be living at home well into their 30/40s.
I also find it interesting on the programme how much some people can afford too. Some of the prices are astronomical!
Round here you’re looking at 500k for a 3 bed semi, nothing special! I’m just about to watch the first episode

Yes, she is annoying me too. In fact both couples are to some extent.

I think, what it is, is that they all seem to want perfection regarding location, house, flat itself when they are first time buyers.

Back in the day they would be looking at things at the bottom of the ladder, but now they aspire to the forever, perfect home that others would take years and multiple house moves to get.

It could be that homes at the bottom of the ladder are snapped up by buy to let investors and they have no choice to look at more expensive homes.

However, they always seem nowadays to be so ungrateful and have snide comments about some really lovely homes. Saying that a brand new modern looking kitchen diner is "totally not to my taste and needs ripping out immediately" was infuriating to hear.

I know they are spending a lot of money, but their expectations are ridiculously high and it spoils what used to be a good programme.

I can’t believe she looked at that in horror and said we’d need to rip it out! Looked new?!

purpleme12 · 17/11/2024 21:36

Wow Radlet is a rich village

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 17/11/2024 21:38

Shameless place marking as I didn’t know it was back on so I’m catching up.

As for how people are affording big houses, often it’s with longer term mortgages. 30 years or more is quite common now.

purpleme12 · 17/11/2024 21:47

I thought 30 years was normal 🤔

Oh ok

purpleme12 · 17/11/2024 21:55

I LOVE the yellow lounge!
That is so what I want to do mine like

fashionqueen0123 · 17/11/2024 22:00

We have a 35 year mortgage. I think most people buying for the first time would. You can even get 40 year ones from some places I think now! But still couldn’t afford a million

purpleme12 · 19/11/2024 22:02

It's always Phil who does the revisits

Printedword · 19/11/2024 22:18

purpleme12 · 17/11/2024 21:47

I thought 30 years was normal 🤔

25 was the norm but it’s probably 30 now in areas where 450 is a cheap house

purpleme12 · 22/11/2024 23:02

Wow 10 round of fertility treatment in 2 years 😮😮

purpleme12 · 22/11/2024 23:03
