Probably the most harrowing television show ever made, Threads follows the build up to and aftermath of a nuclear attack on Great Britain.

It is being broadcast for only the fourth time, and the first time since 2003.

If, like me, you watched it first time around you will never have forgotten it. If you’ve never seen it before, it is a must-watch - but prepare to be traumatised.

Thanks for the reminder. I certainly do remember it from the first time around. I will watch from behind my hands.

Suzuki70 · 28/09/2024 07:28

I saw it about 10 years ago and have never forgotten it! Especially the ending.

heldinadream · 28/09/2024 07:30

I've never seen it but have wanted to see it for ages, so thanks for the alert OP.

winewolfhowls · 28/09/2024 07:35

Shudder. I watched this and read children of the dust at about the same time. Reader, this was not a good idea!

Hobbesmanc · 28/09/2024 07:40

We watched it in school. Horrifying. I still shudder now

ImWearingPantaloons · 28/09/2024 11:27

I have it on DVD.

It disturbed my sleep for days afterwards

mum2jakie · 28/09/2024 12:44

😲 I can still remember watching this originally on VHS. Made my OH watch it maybe 15 years ago (when Lovefilm were still sending DVDs out by post) and he was not at all impressed!! I will definitely record, thank you for the heads up!

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/09/2024 12:48

I watched it when it was first shown. It is still the most frightening seen I have ever seen. I don't know if I can watch it again.

Negangirlxx · 28/09/2024 13:04

I’ve wanted to see this for a while now, and never been able to find it online. Thanks for the heads up!

cariadlet · 28/09/2024 13:05

Thanks for the heads up.

I watched it on tv when it first came out (I was in my teens at the time) but can only remember one scene. Will definitely rewatch.

Dandeliontea123 · 28/09/2024 13:08

I remember being utterly terrified by watching The Day After (American film) in the early 80s so I've never watched Threads. Maybe it's time to give it a go!

VanCleefArpels · 28/09/2024 13:16

I first saw this as a teen at school in RE lessons - started some very interesting discussions! I then saw it on telly late one night with a poorly baby in arms, totally freaked me out but it is very compelling. Will watch again!

Bankholidayhelp · 28/09/2024 13:30

Traumatised me when I watched it. It's not for the faint hearted. I won't be watching it again, it was horrific.

Affected me ever since and coloured my life choices for probably 20+ years after as basically I thought we were all doomed and there was no hope. Took me a long time to come of out that mindset.

CarpeVitam · 28/09/2024 13:43

Thanks for heads up.

HeathenPlayingHouse · 28/09/2024 14:14

We watched it for the first time recently (OH bought it on DVD before we saw it was being shown again).

It definitely affected me but I have to admit that one of my main takeaways from watching it was the realisation of just how graphic cinema has become- I think if it was a new release, people wouldn't even flinch, which is shocking in itself!

BasiliskStare · 28/09/2024 14:21

I watched it the first time shown & I had to run to the end of my road to phone my mother from a phone box to hear a friendly normal voice. Utterly chilling. My DS has seen The Day After ( I haven't ) but he says Thread makes The Day After look like an All inclusive holiday with bad service.

i don’t get it… does he mean more scary or less?!

BasiliskStare · 28/09/2024 23:18

@chestnutroast In his view Threads is much more scary than The Day after - sorry if I didn't make that clear . Threads scarier 😊

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 28/09/2024 23:22

IVe never forgotten it. I can’t decide if I can bear to watch again.

Thank you. Always wanted to watch this!

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 28/09/2024 23:38

Absolutely terrifying film. I remember the end credits saying that in all probability an actual nuclear war would be much worse. How could it possibly be worse?

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 29/09/2024 07:41

Interesting they're showing it at a time when the Middle East are on the brink of mass war and we have the war with Ukraine and Russia. We've had Putin say he could nuke the UK in the past few weeks too.

Although the film has been talked about in the press quite recently.

SmugglersHaunt · 29/09/2024 08:30

They showed it to us at school when I was 12. I'll never forget the glassy-eyed look of shock on all the kids' faces. The end scene is one of the most disturbing - if not the most disturbing thing I've ever seen.

Also, it follows the dropping of just one - mild by today's standards in terms of strength - nuclear bomb on Sheffield.

cariadlet · 29/09/2024 08:40

It's shocking that this was shown in some schools. I must have been in 6th form at the time, watched it at home and still found it scary.

What on earth would be the educational justification for showing it in class?

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 29/09/2024 08:44

I'm in it! Xx
