New series on weekly - thanks @mum2jakie for the shout out

Puzzle setter John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor’s life is upended when his identical twin, DCI James Taylor, disappears in the new series coming to BBC iPlayer and BBC One

When John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor’s (David Mitchell) identical twin, James, disappears off the face of the earth, John takes over his brother’s identity in a quest to discover his whereabouts.

John has never married, never had a family and never really ventured further than his own front door.

Without a computer, mobile phone or even a television, he lives in quiet solitude, designing puzzles for a living, under the nom-de-plume of ‘Ludwig’.

However, filling the shoes of your identical twin is one thing - when your twin also happens to be a successful DCI leading Cambridge’s busy inner-city major crimes team the stakes are much higher.

John may be a master of all things cryptic, but can he crack the biggest puzzle of his life?

Joining David Mitchell in the ‘case-of-the-week’ crime comedy-drama is Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland, Line of Duty), as Lucy Betts-Taylor, John’s sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James.

Also joining the cast are Dipo Ola (Landscapers, We Hunt Together), Gerran Howell (Catch-22, Suspicion), Izuka Hoyle (Boiling Point, Big Boys), Dylan Hughes (Malory Towers, Maternal), and Dorothy Atkinson (Mum, The Gold).

I think fundamentally it’s about the murders and the puzzle solving.

I think that’s what is so escapist and satisfying about this genre, the light meringue of a pleasing plot.

Another thing that I like about it is that it’s not gritty. It is cosy murder of the old school. So even though the crime at the centre would be an absolute abomination if it happened in real life, we all benefit from the murder-mystery convention - if you like, the Agatha Christie tradition – so we don’t dwell on what murder really is, on the horrific nature of the crime.

We focus on the context and the mystery and the play of human emotions that leads to it.

In Ludwig we don’t dwell on the fact that it’s murder any more than in a game of Cluedo you’d start thinking, ‘But how awful for Doctor Black’s family. He must be so missed.’

And the man who dunnit was the vicar in This Country

Oh yes! I loved that programme so much
Very well drawn characters

butterpuffed · 10/10/2024 16:15

I didn't guess who dunnit .I like this prog , easy watching.

I've started watching Upstart Crow , never fancied it before as the title put me off but saw it was David Mitchell again so gave it a go . Loving it , very funny !!

barnstone · 10/10/2024 17:45

I'm enjoying this too and have seen 3 episodes.

Does anyone else think that the source code he needs to crack James' cipher must surely he written under the wallpaper cover of the journal? Or maybe the wallpaper pattern generates the code?

duc748 · 10/10/2024 18:00

First thing I thought was, tear that bloody wallpaper off and see if there's anything written on the inside of it!

barnstone · 10/10/2024 18:28

You too!😂

(It did make me reminisce about covering school text books with wallpaper at the beginning of term though.)

the80sweregreat · 10/10/2024 18:40

My dh was at school in the 60s / 70s and he said his friends used pics of semi naked women ( 'page 3 ' type photos / newspaper ) to cover the books. They were often told to change it .. rightly so !
My mum would find some wallpaper from the loft ( or brown paper ) and help me cover them at the start of term.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/10/2024 19:22

I didn't even think of the wallpaper

I'm def not a detective 😂

I’ve just put Upstart Crow on - I like it but can’t bear the laughter track!

BakeOffRewatch · 10/10/2024 23:26

Who do we think is watching and photographing them at the end of episode 3? I thought the hands were feminine, so i think it’s Holly. She’s been shown to be watching him in the car park, from
above the police station foyer. Not sure she seems the sort to go to the effort in the evening though. I think it’s her rather than someone or something Big.

Each of the three murders has been about sifting false information, the first one someone made a false statement and he had to determine which one, second they left the car elsewhere, third was the assumption motive was formed during that tour.
So should we apply the same to James’s disappearance? I’m probably over thinking here. A little part of me thinks that’s John playing double bluff and he is the baddie!

I thought the revelation about Mandy Ziegler made it MORE likely that Ziegler and Carter are fishy. She just died. Same time as the Sinclair business.

duc748 · 10/10/2024 23:59

But Carter doesn't seem to smell a rat. Or if he does, he's playing his cards close to his chest.

BakeOffRewatch · 11/10/2024 00:06

@duc748 do you mean about James/John or Ziegler? Yeah I did wonder how he didn’t notice a drastic change in James, he was with him for two weeks. But I guess being distracted by grief and your own mission to seem you were moved for merit not connections, would be enough to take your eye off the ball on that.

duc748 · 11/10/2024 00:16

I meant about Zeigler. If he's a new guy, then I guess he doesn't know the brother that well (or at all), so that's plausible, I think, just about!

eggandonion · 11/10/2024 08:40

Cambridge is a strange place...I used to live there!
Between this lot and the vicar from Granchester ...
I'm enjoying Ludwig, I think the casting is excellent.

Not forgetting Professor T.

duc748 · 11/10/2024 11:36

Sorry, but Professor T is Belgian! Accept no ringers!

eggandonion · 11/10/2024 15:03

I don't think we can watch professor T...we aren't in the UK.
My dh had a vpn via a Cambridge connection but I think the university disabled it during lockdown 😐

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/10/2024 15:07

@BakeOffRewatch that's some deduction /thinking

Guess say over my head 😂😂

I assume that she means that the Belgian original is the best and she is in denial about the UK remake.

Well, you're about half-right! The original Belgian series (no longer on All4, sadly, I think) was excellent. I haven't seen the British re-make cos

a) I don't like re-makes much, and

b) I don't like Ben Miller much.

RampantIvy · 11/10/2024 16:32

I didn't know it was originally Belgian.

Apologies Blush

duc748 · 11/10/2024 16:43

No worries.

MusicAndDanse · 11/10/2024 22:22

I'm really enjoying this. I want to know the answer to it all but at the same time don't want it to end!

I'm guessing that when James left and left that note for Lucy, if he was thinking it's a puzzle, she'll get John to help, he wasn't planning on John taking on his identity. If James being there was dangerous and that's why he left then he wouldn't want them to be in danger still.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/10/2024 15:38

That's a good point @MusicAndDanse

If he thought was dangerous and disappeared and now his twin is him to whatever danger there is
