New series on weekly - thanks @mum2jakie for the shout out

Puzzle setter John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor’s life is upended when his identical twin, DCI James Taylor, disappears in the new series coming to BBC iPlayer and BBC One

When John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor’s (David Mitchell) identical twin, James, disappears off the face of the earth, John takes over his brother’s identity in a quest to discover his whereabouts.

John has never married, never had a family and never really ventured further than his own front door.

Without a computer, mobile phone or even a television, he lives in quiet solitude, designing puzzles for a living, under the nom-de-plume of ‘Ludwig’.

However, filling the shoes of your identical twin is one thing - when your twin also happens to be a successful DCI leading Cambridge’s busy inner-city major crimes team the stakes are much higher.

John may be a master of all things cryptic, but can he crack the biggest puzzle of his life?

Joining David Mitchell in the ‘case-of-the-week’ crime comedy-drama is Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland, Line of Duty), as Lucy Betts-Taylor, John’s sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James.

Also joining the cast are Dipo Ola (Landscapers, We Hunt Together), Gerran Howell (Catch-22, Suspicion), Izuka Hoyle (Boiling Point, Big Boys), Dylan Hughes (Malory Towers, Maternal), and Dorothy Atkinson (Mum, The Gold).

I think fundamentally it’s about the murders and the puzzle solving.

I think that’s what is so escapist and satisfying about this genre, the light meringue of a pleasing plot.

Another thing that I like about it is that it’s not gritty. It is cosy murder of the old school. So even though the crime at the centre would be an absolute abomination if it happened in real life, we all benefit from the murder-mystery convention - if you like, the Agatha Christie tradition – so we don’t dwell on what murder really is, on the horrific nature of the crime.

We focus on the context and the mystery and the play of human emotions that leads to it.

In Ludwig we don’t dwell on the fact that it’s murder any more than in a game of Cluedo you’d start thinking, ‘But how awful for Doctor Black’s family. He must be so missed.’

I bet that David Mitchell is actually like Ludwig in real life! 😆

This is what I thought.
This is HIM no acting.

Really good show.

MeAgainAndAgain · 28/09/2024 00:12

David Mitchell was also in Jam and Jerusalem if you saw that?

Oh, come on! It's an aspect of him, for sure, but wildly exaggerated for comic effect. He didn't bag Vicky Coren by being a shut-in scared of his own shadow. He's clearly a very smart and funny guy.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/09/2024 09:26

Is he that precise in real life then ?

OP posts:
Milkandacookie · 28/09/2024 10:31

He comes across very similar on Would I lie to you and some of his previous work.

Of course it's probably exaggerated for comedic effect!

It's more that he rages against the tyrannies and irrationalities of modern life in quite a Ludwig way.

As an example I offer you the avocado bathroom sketch.

Hi all. I've not read the thread as I don't want to see spoilers! But I just wanted to ask - would you say this falls into the category of 'cosy murder mystery' a bit like McDonald & Dobbs or is it really focused on the crimes, etc?

Due to personal reasons, it's not good for me to watch things that can be too 'triggering' but I do quite like being able to get absorbed in a good drama and when I saw this advertised I thought I might like this. Would you be able to tag me with any responses, so I don't see any spoilers in the thread?

@Autumnleaves82 I'd be a bit cautious if I were you. In episode 1 the murder is very lightly handled indeed, but the series-long plot has strong themes of child distress and abandonment which might be triggering to some people.

Someone who's binged more episodes can say whether the murders in later episode are potentially upsetting. I'd guess not, because it's definitely aiming for the "cosy" niche, the writer used to work on Death in Paradise.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/09/2024 13:02

No spoilers on here @Autumnleaves82 as it's a weekly pace thread

We have only seen /commented on e1

E1 reminded me of a mixture of Shakespeare and death in paradise and Hobbs

Easy but fun watching

Ive watched all of them and none of it gets too dark, there is a suicide theme in one.

I thought it was great, absorbing escapism tv, I loved it. I'd describe it as like a British 'Only Murders in the Building'

Jigsawpuzzled · 28/09/2024 13:44

Does anyone have any view on whether this would be suitable for an 11yo? I am going to start it before I make a decision but thought I'd see others initial views as if it's an obvious and definite no I won't start watching.

Unless the 11 year old's parent has abandoned them I'd say it's fine for content, but may not grab their attention.

BIWI · 28/09/2024 14:05

@Blondeshavemorefun for someone who watches so much telly, I'm amazed you don't know who David Mitchell is!!! Grin

Jigsawpuzzled · 28/09/2024 14:07

Thanks @DannSindWirHelden I'll give it a go, although it sounds like I won't want to watch it twice!

Candleabra · 28/09/2024 14:10

I enjoyed it a lot. I like David Mitchell anyway, but this was very good. I also liked that they made him quirky and awkward but not ridiculously so - which made it a lot more believable, I could imagine in different hands it would be completely OTT. Looking forward to the next episode.

I know this is TV paced. But I got hooked and binged the lot. Big thumbs up from me.

JellyBeanFactory · 29/09/2024 00:30

Watched 1 & 2 tonight, reminded me of bit of Jonathan Creek. Enjoyable, amusing and a few "oh yes, of course!"
Anna M-M plays a good foil to her DBiL 😜
