Anyone watching? It’s really quite bizarre; it’s almost played for laughs.

Is that Milli Vanilli they’re playing?! 🤪😂

Just started watching it. Taking me a while to get into but it's getting better. With this series of Monster as with the last one, there's a seriously hot piece of eye candy.

westisbest1982 · 20/09/2024 19:12

I'd prefer this to be a straight drama. I'm not liking the camp feel but that's Ryan Murphy for you. Struggling a little to get into it but will keep going.

YesIJudge · 20/09/2024 20:37

I'm on episode 5, it definitely gets darker in episode 4.

Rollergirl11 · 20/09/2024 20:44

Episode 4 will be my next episode. It’s got an air of American Psycho to it. Still not 100% sure if it’s meant to be funny but some parts are and it’s a bit uncomfortable. The cinnamon bit in episode 3 made me laugh but the subject matter deffo ain’t funny! 😱

Episode 4 here. Had to take a break from it but will no doubt continue to watch.

queenofarles · 21/09/2024 10:07

It’s so so disturbing ! but I do love the late 80s setting , the homes, clothes
The guy who plays Erik is a brilliant actor ,

heartsinvisiblefury · 21/09/2024 10:33

The Hurt Man episode is a tough watch.

Their parents were absolutely horrendous (if this episode is true)

Sexyshrek · 21/09/2024 10:51

Just watched The Hurt Man, it's a really difficult watch.

I'm quite thick skinned when it comes to true crime, but I found this episode to be a bit gratuitous with its description of abuse. 50 minutes of talking about some of the most awful csa that you can imagine. It could have been conveyed to the audience in a shorter and more concise way without minimising the horror of what (allegedly) happened. Interested to hear what others thought of it.

helpmethankyou · 21/09/2024 10:53

i'm watching it but the dad just keeps reminding me of Toto Wolf

Riverhillhouse · 21/09/2024 13:45

I’m on episode 3, I remember the story from the time & it was really shocking.
I’ve watched a few of Ryan Murphy’s series now & they are always quite flashy & fun, despite the subject matter. Often set in the 80’s/ 90’s. The men often seem to be super muscly & there’s quite a lot of homoeroticism.
I couldn’t watch Dahmer as it sounded too graphic & disturbing based on the discussion here. I found the Versace one really hard to watch at points. It sounds like there’s some difficult stuff coming up in terms of the abuse storyline. I know what pp means about it almost seeming comical at points, it’s very camp & over the top.

westisbest1982 · 21/09/2024 13:55

Yes, I’m only part through episode three and felt there was a physical attraction between the brothers as depicted so far. I’m pretty sure that’s pure speculation on behalf of the writers but perhaps I’ve misconstrued this.

Walkinginthesand · 21/09/2024 17:34

Stopped watching 10 minutes into episode 5 and fast forwarded to confirm my suspicion the whole episode was Erik discussing the sa he was the victim of. Really unnecessary, not my idea of entertainment. Will not be returning.

yep, got to love a bit of Milli Vanilli

HurdyGurdy19 · 21/09/2024 17:50

I've just finished The Hurt Man episode, which was so shocking. There's a really weird vibe to the whole series. I don't remember the case, and I'm resisting Googling it, but I'm dreading what might come next.

The whole Hurt Man episode, I felt, was just gratuitous and salacious, and I didn't feel the viewers needed that depth of information about what went on.

But maybe we do, to fully understand what led the brothers to do brutally murder their parents.

Rollergirl11 · 21/09/2024 18:35

I do remember it at the time. There was so much tv coverage of it. And then there was the Ben Stiller skit of it within the film Cable Guy which was very very funny!

Absolutely could have done witjhout the entire episode. It was not necessary at all.

DarkandStormyNightie · 21/09/2024 19:33

I thought the murder scene in episode 1 was horrendous. Wasn't expecting to see it in such detail.

How did they do it? is it all CGI?

Not sure I want to watch episode 5 now

Sexyshrek · 22/09/2024 01:03

I've just watched episode 6 and to be fair, it puts The Hurt Man episode into context. Episode 5 is the brothers point of view, and episode 6 is told from the parents side. It's very clever storytelling so far.

Riverhillhouse · 22/09/2024 09:16

I’ve just watched episode 5 & thought it was amazingly well acted, very naturalistic. I didn’t find the content as upsetting as pp but could be partly because I’d had a warning & also because I’m on a lot of painkillers & off my head! That’s not to say it wasn’t hideous hearing the details of the abuse but I’m so glad it wasn’t acted out. I know they say your imagination is more powerful but listening to the details I could detach whereas if they had actually shown what went on in graphic detail it would have been gratuitous I think. I found the lawyers constant prompts & interruptions quite jarring in that episode though.

Rollergirl11 · 22/09/2024 13:32

I thought episode 5 was outstanding. I wonder if the actor will get a nomination for it. It also looked to me like it was filmed in one take, which if was the case is even more impressive. The camera slowly moved closer to Eric’s face through the course of the episode. The only thing I thought seemed contrived was “the hurt man”. I can’t imagine a child would name themselves something like that.

I watched episode 5, it was very powerful. So well acted, he came across as so vulnerable and fragile.

Have you seen the real life Erik Menendez's response? it was feature in Rolling Stone magazine.

I'm not sure why he thinks that the story wasn't treated fairly without sensitivity to the victims? It tried to give everyone's perspective, which is as fair as you can be I would imagine.

Perhaps he was thinking in the post #metoo movement it would only give their side? not sure.

It’s glossy and compelling. The Oziel/Judalon situation blowing the whole case back open is fascinating.
I’m not up to Ep 5 yet. If I can just admire the acting I’ll watch it, if it’s too ‘real’ I’ll skip it. But so far it’s got a layer of almost……pastiche?

Agree I thought the actor gave an outstanding performance.

Also I think the level of detail was necessary.

In deciding if you think they are being truthful or not then glossing over their allegations of abuse isn't helpful.

The next episode however paints a different perspective from the POV of the parents.

I think the point of the drama is asking the question who actually are the monsters here?

NoGwenItsABoxingDayTrifle · 22/09/2024 17:12

I really liked it, it's left me with a lot of questions though.. mainly is there any evidence at all that the allegations against the parents?
Season 3 is already ready to roll, Charlie Hunnam will be playing Ed Gein (he was the inspiration behind Psycho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Pigeonqueen · 22/09/2024 17:21

I am watching this and finding it very interesting. A lot of people in the various forums I’m in are suggesting they should be let out now and have the same sympathy that Gypsy Rose Blanchard seems to attract - ie killed abusive parent(s).

The real court footage is all on you tube. The footage of Eric talking about the first time his father raped him is particularly harrowing.

I think the series is quite stylised in places but then that is typical of Ryan Murphy. I like everything he does.
