DS (5 in a few weeks) and DD (almost 7) were both absolutely terrified by Andy's story from Nigeria showing himself as a child being woken in the night by armed robbers who threatened his father, stole their belongings and then returned three months later to clearout the rest of the house.

I watched it on iplayer - can't believe this reconstruction of children being woken in the night and hiding in terror was shown on children's tv. I assume it's safe to let them watch the bbc in the afternoon.

yes that is a bit strong isn't it

but better to watch in the safety of your home with mum there than to actually go through it, which those kids did....he was very clear in saying no harm came to them...and it gives an understanding that not all children are safe...

I know what you mean though, you do want to protect them from this sort of thing. I am always unsure with ds who is six soon, about whether to leave the news on, etc. So many horrible things out there in the world, and I don't want to leave him uninformed and naive but I don't want to ruin the safety of his childhood either. It's hard.

I watch stuff I think might be scary with them, but expect blue peter to be reasonably tame. I don't think there was any need for a reconstruction. Children have nightmares about all sorts of things and thinking you might be attacked by an armed gang when in bed is too much, I think.

I don't shield them from reality particularly - they knew all about my dad's death last year and came to the funeral.

yes blue peter is one programme that I would think would be tame, definitely!

I think (showing my age here) that maybe something a lot less dramatic would have been enough, they used to do illustrated stories sometimes, drawings etc. Still covering the issue they want to cover but in a much less overtly scary way.

lol you're better off with edd, edd and eddy on nick jnr.

children's bbc is so ridiculous

southeastastra · 15/04/2008 22:10

and i'm frankly amazed that the majority of my contemporaries weren't allowed to watch itv.

I wasn't allowed to watch 'Newsround' as a child and I now think my Mum was probably right - she saw some pretty horrendous things in the war in her own childhood.

(also wasn't allowed to watch 'crackerjack' because she couldn't bear the children all shouting )
