We're not a very sporty household and wouldn't bother with the olympics if it weren't for the tennis! My husband is a huge fan of tennis, mainly the women's game, though he does quite like Alcaraz so will watch the men's game if he's playing.
However, Iga is by far his favourite player and his enjoyment of tournaments is very much affected by how well she is doing, whenever she loses it's the end of the world and he declares tennis to be dead!
He was a bit nervous about Iga having to face DRC today as she can be dangerous when she's on form and he was very distressed by the second set, but he's fine now Iga's through to the next round. This is probably going to be Iga's best chance for olympic gold, being at the site of some of her greatest triumphs and I hope the pressure of being the favourite for the medal doesn't get to her too much!
It was a shame for Danielle that she had to retire like that, especially when she'd been playing so well in the second set.

Only managed to see the final game of Nadalcaraz. Sad
Funny how the tv cameras forgot about the winners on court and followed Nadalcaraz downstairs instead. But why did Carlos go in one door, presumably to a locker room, and Rafa continued along the corridor? Does he have his own suite of rooms set aside just for him? ConfusedGrin
I think the US are going to continue to be the bad guys tomorrow because I can't see Dandy beating Fritz and Paul, unfortunately.

Fizzywinegum · 31/07/2024 21:20

If anyone deserved his own suite of rooms at RG it would be Rafa Grin

I liked Alcaraz's little squeeze of Rafa's shoulder when they walked off court

Sadly I think you might be right about Fritz and Paul against Dandy but it's been fun (and you never know!)

kazzaD66 · 31/07/2024 22:26

I know fizzy. And Carlos was clapping Rafa off the court just before that aswell. He was just a fan. Smile

IceandIndigo · 01/08/2024 11:45

So sad that Nadalcaraz lost, I really wanted Rafa to finish with a medal. I’m on holiday in Greece and can’t work out how to watch any Olympics, despite Greece being the home of the Olympics! I’d hoped my Discovery + subscription might still work, but no such luck. Oh well, perhaps another cocktail…

Raahh · 01/08/2024 12:05

Iga is down a set to Zheng- but has a break in the second set.

JaneJeffer · 01/08/2024 12:17

Surely they'll be showing Stef somewhere this evening Ice? Enjoy your holiday 🍹

I've just put Iga on. Have they mentioned the beef with Collins yesterday?

OP posts:
JaneJeffer · 01/08/2024 12:22

How's the husband coping with the score line @Everlore? Grin

OP posts:
Raahh · 01/08/2024 12:22

Ice I would definitely have thought they would show Stef.

And I have everything crossed he beats Djok.

I am sad about Rafa- I know realistically winning a medal was a long shot, but a bit of the sparkle has gone out of the tournament now- and I think the crowd numbers will drop. Doubles matches don't usually attract the attention that they did- the crowd was huge yesterday (and sorry, but Dandy don't have the same mass appeal Grin).

Raahh · 01/08/2024 12:24

I haven't noticed menton of the beef from yesterday, Jane but after losing the first set, she vanished for nearly 10 minutes, which did not go down too well with Jo and Chris commentating. But had the desired effect of swinging things in her favour.

Zheng is carrying on where she left off, playing Angie.

Navarro had a swipe at Zheng as well calling her cutthroat!

OP posts:
Raahh · 01/08/2024 12:25

Having said that, Zheng has now done what she did against Angie and has broken Iga.

Raahh · 01/08/2024 12:26

Iga really isn't playing like Iga.

JaneJeffer · 01/08/2024 13:01

Well done Qinwen

How does the bronze medal work? Is it a play off between the losing semifinalists?

OP posts:
Raahh · 01/08/2024 13:05

I had to take dh and his car for his MOT , so missed the end.

Well done Zheng.

JaneJeffer · 01/08/2024 13:11

Shame Hsieh is out. I would have loved her to win a gold medal.

kazzaD66 · 01/08/2024 13:11

Wow! Iga has lost! Did she play badly or did Zheng play well?

Score watching only and see that Katie and Heather have just lost. It's Katie's birthday today aswell.

JaneJeffer · 01/08/2024 13:44

Iga wasn't herself kazza

How does the bronze medal work? Is it a play off between the losing semifinalists?

It is-- and it's why Djok doesn't have any medals - because he was a losing semi finalist last time- and lost the bronze medal match.

I really hope all the Gods of Olympia are on Stef's side today Grin.

( I've got images of characters from Disney's Hercules in my head now. I love that film. Grin).

Raahh · 01/08/2024 13:57

VAMOS Carlitos- we really can't have TP win this match.
