Just spotted it’s on Netflix. Am going to watch this eve.

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 27/07/2024 19:06

I saw this in the cinema, it's very watchable

Freydis2507 · 27/07/2024 19:10

I've just put this on my watch list!

ConfusedKoala13 · 27/07/2024 19:11

Oooh wanted to watch this at the cinema & didn't get round to it.

missedmyappointment · 27/07/2024 19:12

This film is cruel and inaccurate. How is it ok to make a comedy about a real woman in the depths of severe mental illness? This isn't fiction, it is based on the real lives of real people. Edith's father is portrayed as an evil monster, How is that ok? To make a normal man, with normal feelings, out to be an evil monster just for entertainment? How do you think his descendants feel about that? How would he feel about that? How would you feel about someone doing that to you when you were dead? Portraying you as a nasty sexist abuser, when you were not.

LittleMonks11 · 27/07/2024 19:13

Oooo! Didn't know it was on the box now!

MartyFunkhouser · 27/07/2024 19:16

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Olivia Colman is brilliant.

LaurieFairyCake · 27/07/2024 19:22

Just watched it, great acting from both the leads

So enjoyable!

CopperNanoTubes · 27/07/2024 19:28

I really didn’t enjoy it. I don’t know why. Not my kind of thing I suppose?
I love Olivia Coleman but sadly dislike most of the things she’s in.

ClaraLaraBow · 27/07/2024 19:36

Just watching the woman police officer get suspended for bring the only real evidence to chief

Eh? Do you have some sort of insider knowledge?

I thought it was brilliantly done, it portrayed the complexity of mental health issues sympathetically and with humour and affection.

Even dad was portrayed as a troubled man of his time, not evil.

How is it "enjoyable" to make a comedy about a woman with mental illness, and to invent the lie that her father was abusive?

I don't get it.

I've just tried it on Netflix but gave up about 20 mins in. I hated the stereotyping of the characters (even allowing for the period) and was very uncomfortable with the overt sexism, ageism etc etc right from the start. Not for me.

Have you seen it? Because what you’re describing is very different from what I watched

ClaraLaraBow · 27/07/2024 20:12

Even if it was based on real characters, they're all dead now.

Good film!

The swearing is majestically imaginative. Loved it!!!

ClaraLaraBow · 27/07/2024 20:17

@missedmyappointment was Edith a great great aunt of yours?

This is not what I saw, at all. It’s a very humorous account of a true story. I couldn’t see anything cruel or warped about it.

It’s an excellent film and I’ve just remembered Timothy Spall is brilliant in it too.

what about the way Edith father is portrayed. How would you like to be portrayed like that after your death? There is no evidence, at all, that he was abusive. How about if someone made a "comedy" about your child's mental illness and portrayed you as abusive? how would that be ok?

Its horrible

ClaraLaraBow · 27/07/2024 20:42

Ok @missedmyappointment what was the story passed down through the family.

Have you watched it? Because it’s much more complex than that

MartyFunkhouser · 27/07/2024 20:57

It’s a really interesting film, it doesn’t purport to be a documentary but it is based on actual events.

My only sympathy would lie with the person who was imprisoned despite being innocent. I think Edith was portrayed relatively kindly, despite her awful behaviour.
