Macron was wrong about the stadium vibe. Dissipated the moment. But I guess that proves why Presidents shouldn't run cultural or artistic events! Better off fighting the far right (sort of....).

Amazing & loved that the athletes pageant was the focus at the start. Brilliant party atmosphere then stunning displays all on the seine rather than a stadium. Loved it.

So, on balance, not a triumph for Paris as I interpret responses, so far.

The French are very staid; it's the thing I like most about life in France to be honest. I would live there. and pay French taxes. Which I think are reasonably fair on balance. It is entirely reasonable that I should pay to fund any healthcare that I need in France if I move there. I would be 68, but I could buy a house in a small French town for a third of the price the same house/building would cost in the UK, and maybe the rest on health. And I speak French, passably well. Not totally fluent but good enough to eat dinner and chat politely at an intelligent level. .

I think people forget that the opening ceremony for 2012 was a bit dull, and would have been even more dull to those who weren't from the U.K. the closing ceremony though was another level!

I like it when they do the athletes seperate to the performancey stuff. This way seems like they are assuming we'll be bored watching the athletes when they are actually what the bloody Olympics is about
