I agree. The one with the massive birthmark on his face was just awful. My dd was quite scared but it.

I do feel sorry for the people though.

Fimbo · 11/04/2008 17:15

by it

NoBiggy · 11/04/2008 17:15

That's ok, there's about half a million other channels (and one or two might have something worth watching sometimes!)

claricebeansmum · 11/04/2008 17:16

They are not entertainment

MrsMattie · 11/04/2008 17:16

I think they are in very poor taste. Horrible sensationalist adverts that basically say 'Come and watch the freak show!'.

Mamazon · 11/04/2008 17:16

I dislike the way the programmes are made.
they aren't informative, its just a modern day freak show.

cremolafoam · 11/04/2008 17:23

channel 5 are being relentless about it. we were about to watch House last night and i could see dd's eyes pop out of her head looking at it.
it was advertised 7 times in the course of last nights telly( i was stuck on channel 5 for House and greys anatomy)

DD (10) and I had a conversation about this. She could not understand why it was on TV in a very straight forward kid like way. She said she thought it was odd to film people who have something not normal with them and really underneath they are normal people and we should treat them like normal people because their lives must be hard enough and she thought they would be really nice.

I am thinking of putting her forward for Head of Programming at Channel 4.

claricebeansmum · 11/04/2008 17:27

Channel 5 even

Ledodgy · 11/04/2008 17:28

I hate them as well in the same way I hate the tragic life stories section in whsmiths.

beansprout · 11/04/2008 17:29

Mitchell and Webb did a good sketch about this kind of programme.

claricebeansmum · 11/04/2008 17:29

Ledodgy - that section is called something even more stupid in Waterstones..something like "Painful Lives" or more trite than that

beansprout · 11/04/2008 17:30

here

claricebeansmum · 11/04/2008 17:32

LOL "Sensitve Freak Show Series"

cremolafoam · 11/04/2008 17:32

arf at the Mislit sections.also feel weak looking at those. seems to be *really popular at the moment.
Claricebeansmum. your dd is fabby.what a brilliant thing to say.

southeastastra · 11/04/2008 17:33

i'm sure the day today did something about a boy who was made of wood too.

misdee · 11/04/2008 17:36

i wanted to buy a book today in smiths that wasnt mislit, but couldnt find anything appealling.

claricebeansmum · 11/04/2008 17:39

Perhaps we could petition a section called "Cheerful Books for People who Like to have a book to read to cheer them up and take them away from everyday life"?

claricebeansmum · 11/04/2008 17:41

Cremola - DD can be pretty spot on about these sorts of things. Pretty sound

cocolepew · 11/04/2008 19:43

I hate the way they treat them like freaks, but try to pretend it's a serious documentary. Monday on channel 4 had a programme untitled 'I Am The Elephant Boy'. The so-called 'Elephant Man' did not have NF1 as the boy in the programme, but my dd does and sensational titles/programmes like this doesn't help anyone with NF.

SorenLorensen · 11/04/2008 19:50

I watched one 'by accident' last week (I really don't as a rule - no, honestly, I don't - I agree with all the points on this thread) and it was actually quite sensitively done and very moving (I got caught up and watched to the end) but the whole programme was cheapened and trivialised by its title "Half Ton Mom". I wonder if they have those sorts of titles in order to appeal to rubber-neckers and gawpers.
