New 4 part drama on weekly. This thread is tv Based thread !!

Thur 9pm itv

Steven Moffat’s new series about a TV news anchor who’s cancelled for making a sexist joke at a wedding is bound to start some conversations.

Not least because the story bears a striking resemblance to several recent scandals. But also because it so thoroughly, and sensitively, interrogates all sides in the ‘culture wars’.

Douglas Bellowes is the greying anchor of the fictional news programme Live at Six.

He’s built an enviably successful life with his wife and newspaper editor Sheila, but it all comes tumbling down when he allegedly makes a sexist joke at his cousin’s wedding.

When a fellow guest Tweets about it and goes viral, the Bellowes and the Live at Six team must do their utmost to get ahead of the scandal.

That includes Douglas’ younger, sharper co-anchor and self-described “best friend” Madeline. Or does it?

Hugh Bonneville, who’s best known for starring in a couple of British institutions (Downton Abbey and Paddington), is perfectly cast as the titular news anchor and national treasure.

Lending Douglas his bumbling charm, he immediately gains your trust and sympathy. But does he really deserve it?

At one point, Douglas’ producer Toby reminds him that, in order to avoid scandal when out in public, he must be “balanced, boring and bland.” “And fortunately, in life,” said Bonneville, “I’ve always been balanced, boring and bland.”

Madeline has formed a ratings-winning partnership with Douglas, but there are signs the headstrong co-anchor is growing tired of the ‘co’ prefix.

She’s charming and seems to bend Douglas to her will, while remaining an enigma to the rest of her colleagues.

Madeline is “my favourite character I’ve ever played,” explained Gillan, but also “the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Because she’s quite removed from me as a person so it required a fair amount of acting! I don’t think I could ever wrap someone around my finger like her.”

In a karmic twist of fate, Sheila finds herself having to protect her husband from the kind of scandalous allegations she’d usually be amplifying, as the ruthless editor-in-chief of a tabloid newspaper.

Much to the amusement of the Q&A audience, Alex Kingston said she based the character of Sheila on Sue Vertue, the producer of the series who also happens to be Moffat’s wife. Only because she’s “incredibly loving and protective,” she hastened to clarify.

Douglas’ deeply self-interested producer who’s more interested in burying the scandal – and thus protecting his channel’s ratings – than doing what the news should be setting out to do: revealing the truth.
Praising Moffat’s ability to write great “arias” for his characters, Miles expounded on Toby’s in the opening scene. It set the tone for “his cynicism, his desire for self-preservation at any cost, the way he manipulates people, the way he regards the truth, what journalism is to him.”

It's a bit All About Eve, isn't it? Enjoying this a lot, some great lines: "It'll keep Stonewall off our back for a week"! 😄

IdaPrentice · 09/07/2024 00:32

I've just finished ep 2 and I'm really enjoying it - very funny (though excruciating) and clever. Alex Kingston is excellent, as is Hugh B. I really want to show my teen DD the bit in episode 1 where Alex Kingston comes home and finds her DD has left the door open. Aarggh!

And in ep 2:
They've changed who's doing the interview.
Who?
It's a woman.
From Newsnight
FUUUUUCK!
😁

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/07/2024 08:27

It's def diff and I hope we find out what the joke was

But bet we don't

Wouldn't be surprised if (assuming no one has identified who did the original tweet) that it was Madeline under a anonymous account

Although it will be a little bit disappointing that despite some strong women characters and holding a mirror up to sexist and misogynist behavior it ends up a bit but some women are crazy so shrug

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/07/2024 13:54

Whoop e3 is tonight

I wasn’t sure what to make of this episode then I swear the ending was the same as last weeks episode

Clawdy · 11/07/2024 22:34

The hotel bedroom scene was an uncomfortable watch, and too prolonged.

duc748 · 12/07/2024 00:51

It was an uncomfortable watch, but I thought it was well scripted, and the ambiguous intervention of Douglas was very well done.

Shellingbynight · 12/07/2024 08:43

I'm enjoying this, after the third episode it's all starting to make sense. The reason she was intruding on Douglas's space and holding his hands in episode 2 was to put him in the same position she'd been in with Toby.

So Douglas's sexist joke was actually telling 'a story about her', presumably that he went to the hotel room that evening and realised she was shagging Toby (we don't know if she did).

I thought the hotel bedroom scene went on too long, but it was well written.

yes, that’s my take on what’s happened.

Well acted last night and uncomfortable to watch at times. Happened often and still does unfortunately.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/07/2024 12:27

@Shellingbynight that's what I thought as well

Toby made her feel uncomfortable with the touching. Standing. Drinking. Sit down. Nakedness. Cufflinks

Ans that's what she did do Douglas

But he was innocent and not after Madeline

But sounds like with her previous history and flirting /messages with him that the wife mentioned on holiday in the rain

But why if she trying to ruin Douglas if he supported her from the beginning

The plot thickens

Can't wait for next weeks. Tempted to binge to find out what happens

But obv I won't as babe so much other stuff to watch 😂

I think the quality of the script (especially) and performances are way above the general level of these mini-series.

I said the same, ep3 makes Douglas look like the good guy. But I am guessing he enraged her by telling the (probably untrue) story about her?

Although I don't understand why she was constantly sending Douglas flirty messages. Unless he told 'the story' long ago, and she has been playing the long game?

I agree the performances and script are excellent.

I think it helps to remember it was written as a play hence the long scenes. Yes it's very high quality.

butterpuffed · 12/07/2024 15:28

It did go on for far too long with Toby . I'm guessing she gave in or she wouldn't have got the job but she was dead against it . Douglas makes a guess at what was happening and maybe told the tale about her, as other posters are assuming too .

I think she's taking her revenge out on the wrong person but she wants his job . If she takes it out on Toby she'll lose her job altogether .

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/07/2024 18:49

Toby was slimey !!!

Shame she didn't record the conversation ans his sexual comments

OP posts:
Shellingbynight · 12/07/2024 20:08

@butterpuffed yes I too thought that as she did get the job she must have slept with him, because there was all that stuff about "whatever muck you have to wade through, it's worth it". But then again I thought she would be more annoyed with Douglas for passing on that rumour if she hadn't, than if she had (IFYSWIM).

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/07/2024 21:05

But would he have said that 3yrs on as a joke

I agree the performances and script are excellent.

Because he left her in the hotel room with Toby despite the fact that he most certainly knew he was a predator?
Because as he walked away from the door his comment made it clear that he knew what would be expected of her and that it was acceptable.
That, despite the above, he told a story taking the piss out of her for (possibly) sleeping with him when he was the predator and she was vulnerable.
And all this time he's given off the veneer of being a good bloke and of being her friend.

That's why.

Shellingbynight · 12/07/2024 22:12

That doesn't work within the storytelling surely? Your version implies Douglas could have 'saved' her. But he did not know Toby was a predator, he had been trying to find some dirt on him but failed. But more importantly it implies she could not save herself and needed 'saving by a man', which is sexist in itself. Whereas the way it was set up, she easily have saved herself by walking out with Douglas. She made the decision not to.

The only thing Douglas is to blame for is telling the story. Surely she should be blaming Toby and trying to get him defenestrated?

CarlaH · 13/07/2024 08:23

It was a bit ambiguous. I assumed that Douglas saw the Do Not Disturb sign, then saw that she had as well and therefore she was happy to stay. She could have asked him to wait while she gathered her things and left with him but she didn't.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/07/2024 17:26

So do we think she did sleep with him to get the job
