The other thread was getting too slow (and we were running out of space faster than the thread on a bobbin)

The judging is just annoying me now. What with that and the noone finishing I am starting to think the shark has been jumped.

yep, this may be my last "religiously tuning in every week without fail" year.

Aligator was fab. Suzy's m2m was awful - excacerbated by the fact that child walked with a hollow back (like a gymnast) and had no waist (normal at that age)

PickAChew · 26/06/2024 13:04

Yes, she said it when she decided to the extra tier to her top because she felt it was a bit short.

And I agree with her that she made the right choice.

Patrick's comment was unnecessary and he was wrong - it looked MUCH better with the extra tier.

It was an insult that from the final two possibilities to go, the judges chose the one they did.

It was much more complex and beautifully made garment than the pile of badly assembled ill-assorted rags that was allowed to go through to next week.

(Agreed with the GOW though)

Madcats · 26/06/2024 20:21

Nearly 15 years ago, when she was a preschooler, DD used to wear this costume as often as she could (but in the correct size): https://www.fancydress.com/products/kids-enormous-crocodile-costume?

Umanresources · 26/06/2024 20:57

I feel as though Suzie was massively hampered by her own outfit this week. It’s all well and good being quirky, but I think her clothing now is just over the top. I didn’t think her MtM skort was well executed at all. I was surprised that she managed to avoid elimination this week.
Loved GOTW though.

Floralnomad · 26/06/2024 21:45

The GOTW was fabulous , especially when you compared what the others made in the same time . Like a pp unless it improves next year I doubt I will bother to watch , I’m only carrying on with this because I’ve started it . I think they’d be better off doing a sort of champion of champion series inviting back some of the people who’ve made top 3 in previous years , at least they’d have people who can sew and finish an item .

SoupDragon · 26/06/2024 21:48

I'll still watch it. I love watching people being creative, be that woodwork, pottery or sewing. I have no interest in baking though!

I'm an OK sewer. Not great, but OK. What's getting me is the complete lack of basic knowledge , things like Teflon feet. And I've been trying to work out if they have been asked to do anything that hasn't appeared in one of the other series. If I were on I would make sure that my knowledge covered everything previous contestants had been made to do. It's not as if they can't see the old series to check.

AnnaMagnani · 26/06/2024 22:27

Exactly, you could write a checklist of do I know how to:
sew knits and wovens
make a sportswear item
use an overlocker
use a coverstitch machine
make a child's fancy dress costume
make a random garment by draping in 1 hour

and so on as these things come up every year.

2Rebecca · 26/06/2024 23:43

Disappointed Suzie didn't go. Disappointed they didn't rate Alix's M2M more highly. Not everyone has a wacky childhood photo and I bet the brief was to try and copy a childhood outfit with extra points for wackiness not mentioned. I don't understand why they preferred badly applied badges to a velvet jumpsuit of mermaidy dress

Assorted zips.
Buttonholes.
Dart placement (not that we've seen many darts, this year)
Collars.
Slippy fabrics
Not using needlessly slippy fabrics
Hems f various types
Hand sewing is more than just running stitch

Or mermaidy dress not of

Some of them need a good shake: sure that slippy satin in hot pink with green pugs fits your "quirky" personality but the fabric is all wrong for a structured jacket.

Agree with pp that the #Sewists used to all know the basics. These days they're more like my daughter who can make wearable clothes having watched a few TikTok - but they don't stand up to scrutiny. It is the "fed up with experts" culture that is taking cobmver (which is why I love Derek whatshisface on Twitter so much)

Halsall · 27/06/2024 08:35

Oh Derek Guy is great

RobynRB · 27/06/2024 11:12

Actually gave it a miss last night, and probably won't watch again. Quality of contestants seems way down on previous years and time allowed is clearly not long enough or maybe see previous comment? The tickboxing is annoying too, though I'm glad Luke toned it down the last couple of weeks - sick of hearing the same old story. Why does it matter? You're here to sew and compete.

Actually I feel the same about all the contestants - I don't really care where they live or that they have three grandchildren who love indoor bowls. But that's just me.

Also, is it me or do 'queer' people have any other interests? Because whenever you get a contestant who is then that's their inspiration every single week. It's like, do you not like anything else? Like baking or cricket or hangliding or rambling, I don't know, anything?

It's like if one of the contestants was obsessed with the 1950s and every week they made something that looked 1950s the judges would say they were one note and need to 'step outside their comfort zone'.

Also, I know it's a few weeks back now, but what was the point of those cloth handbag things?

I quite liked the cloth handbag challenge but I am getting fed up of the unfinished garments. If it just becomes a competition about who can sew the quickest it kind of misses the point doesn't it?

In past series you would be really impressed by what the contestants had managed to create! Now it's a relief if they get the buttons on and the sleeves aren't pinned with a safety pin.

ThreeWordHarpy · 27/06/2024 15:11

In other social media (FB groups) people are reporting attending “an evening with Patrick and Esme”, and the issue of timing is a big question from the audience.

If I recall correctly, they said pattern challenge and timing is indeed tried out on a panel of sewers including previous contestants. And Patrick’s other comments implied that many of this year’s contestants spent too long faffing and talking and not enough time concentrating and sewing.

I think the challenges have been good this year - just this week making a child’s animal outfit from a beach towel was a realistic task for any home sewer for example. The MtM had huge scope for them to do virtually anything that played to their strengths.

I think the frustration many here are feeling is that the balance in contestants is off. Usually a better mix of those who are intuitive and design focused, and those who play it safe but deliver to a high quality. Part of the joy of previous series have been watching intuitive sewers gain new skills, and safe sewers learning to push themselves with design choices, and the final is usually one of each plus a wild card who could either have a disaster or play a blinder.

We’re at the stage now where I think most of the remaining contestants’ strengths lean towards design, and there’s very little experience in the room, especially now Don has left. And by experience I mean what can be gained from years of churning out clothes for themselves or others and thus judging what fabric would suit what project and encountering different types of seams, zips, pockets, plackets, linings, collars, bindings etc etc. I don’t think I’ve picked up a single tip or trick this year.

Hatty65 · 27/06/2024 16:25

I'm another one really disappointed by the quality of the sewing this year. It feels like by this point, the producers are picking a set of 12 people who are 'representing' a certain category. 'Elderly', 'Ethnic Minority' 'Queer/Trans' 'Young/Inexperienced', 'Quirky/Odd', 'Man who can Sew' so as to make it Personality TV. I don't want Personalities. I want people who can sew properly, not someone who is ticking a box. I think a pp said they got someway into the application process but you need some sort of 'gimmick' to get further - which is pathetic. I'm frankly quite happy to watch 12 white middle aged women if they are good at the sewing challenges. Or whatever. It's touted as being 'Britain's Best Amateur Sewer' - and it clearly isn't.

I genuinely just want to see a selection of people who can actually sew well. We've had that in the past. I'm not good with names, but remember Asmaa, Man Yee, Marni, Annie, Tony - all GOOD sewers who rose to the challenges. Most of this year's lot - certainly those remaining - don't feel like they can actually cope with basic sewing, although I agree that the time is ridiculous. I seem to think they used to give 4.5 hours for the Pattern Challenge, and now we're down to about 3. What's the point if people can't make it in 3 hours?

I'm losing interest in watching a load of badly sewn, unfinished garments with Patrick and Esme basically ranking which one stinks the least. Most of them are unwearable - and you wouldn't leave the house in them.

Does anyone else get the impression Luke and Kiall don't gel? Probably just me!

Definitely!

lollipoprainbow · 27/06/2024 18:33

Felt sure Suzy was going, her mtm was a mess and upside down. Georgie's was well sewn she just ran out of time.

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/06/2024 18:38

I think Georgie is generally a better sewer than Suzy.

Floralnomad · 27/06/2024 19:29

@Hatty65 totally agree with you aside from the fact that I’m not sure these are even that good as personalities . I think there is an agenda for Luke to win for whatever reason that may be , I hope I’m proved wrong .

MouseMinge · 27/06/2024 19:46

I've only just found this thread and Sewing Bee is my joy although a little bit less this year. Looking forward to catching up and swapping comments with you all. Before then, I was really surprised that Suzy stayed. She seems like a nice person, etc but her mtm was utterly appalling and Georgie's was just obviously so much better with better skills shown. I'm not sure what on earth was goin going on there!

The standard this year is pretty low, hence less joy. I really am tired of the failure to complete the pattern challenge nearly every bloody week. I was thinking that they weren't giving them enough time and there might still be some of that but Alex finished the Neru jacket last week when no one else did so it is possible. At least some of the time.

Pascha's crocodile was wonderful and totally worthy of garment of the week. It was definitely the best transformation challenge round we've seen for a while and she was the best of the best.

Hatty65 · 27/06/2024 19:49

@Floralnomad I agree with the lack of personalities. They are all perfectly pleasant people, but it doesn't feel like they got through to the final 12 contestants based on sewing ability! It's BBC minorities box ticking.

I fail to believe there are not hundreds of folks out there who are more competent sewers than these people, and at the end of the day I just want to admire people's sewing. There's been very little to admire this year.

Bankholidayhelp · 27/06/2024 20:07

It seems a long way away from the series that had Tilly (and the buttons) or the lady that just cut fabric after taking measurements and sewed excellent stuff. I think she'd learned the technique from her aunt.

Hatty65 · 27/06/2024 20:14

@Bankholidayhelp Absolutely! We've had some super people who could sew in the past. My favourite thing ever - and I would LOVE a dress like it, was Asmaa's transformation dress in the final last year. It was incredibly beautiful and her friend looked gorgeous in it.

I want to watch stuff I can admire and be in awe of - not things where I'm gazing critically at an unfinished garment with wonky seams, pockets that don't match and a skewiff collar thinking, 'Blimey - I can sew better than that'.
