The other thread was getting too slow (and we were running out of space faster than the thread on a bobbin)

I agree. I expect to see the best of the sewers who applied in this competition and to be inspired by them. On the other hand it took me ages to do 6 button holes and sew on 6 buttons on a silk PJ top last night so I wouldn't apply as I'd hate producing a poor garment because I was rushing

I wonder if the sewers who refuse to do a rush job are put off applying and this is what they are left with.

SoupDragon · 06/07/2024 10:37

There's definitely a balance that needs to be made and this year they've got it wrong. Any decent sewer can produce a good garment if given unlimited time, only the best can do it to a tight deadline. To make it a competition there needs to be a tight deadline but it does need to be tailored to the skills of the sewers they have.

Only just watched this weeks episode as been away. Thought what Suzy was wearing was horrible. I looked at her instagram and there are some truly dreadful outfits on there. The bed sheet dress is particularly awful

LIZS · 06/07/2024 15:33

@mydogisthebest yes I thought same re. Suzy. The bust darts were too loose and the ruffles too much!

Did they start off measuring their models for the mtm this week or only fitting once constructed. A couple of them were not flattering shapes and the cups stood proud. Some of the pj blouses had uneven or wobbly hems too.

I do love mumsnet's lack of "be kind" admonishments. I joined the Sewing Bee Facebook group and there are lots of posters with an " all posts must be positive no criticism is allowed" attitude, plus most posters just want to show off their own makes rather than comment on the programme. It's nice to see what other people have made but that's what Instagram is for and Sewing Pattern Review. I love sewing pattern review as lots of detail on seeing particular patterns

2Rebecca · 06/07/2024 15:58

And "sewing particular patterns "

I was in this FB group too and left after too much " don't be horrid". I'd much rather have a decent discussion!

SoupDragon · 06/07/2024 16:21

In previous years these threads have come down on people who have made derogatory personal comments about sewers (eg voice etc). I do think that sort of negativity isn't on.

So did I a few years ago assuming it's the same group. I think reasonable criticism of the sewing as opposed to personal insult is fine.

The FB group wasn't like this. Of course personal comments are not on, but I'd like to reserve the right to say "that buttonhole was crap". ( If indeed it was!)

Luke is v offhand with Kiel also with Marcus telling him his tones were wrong then smirking.

Luke was right about that though. Patrick was also dubious about Marcus' original choice.

MouseMinge · 06/07/2024 21:01

I got the latest Sewing Bee book a little while back and I've just opened it to have a look through for the first time and the inside cover is photos of all this year's contestants.

More interesting stuff, it the sewing section it has how to do piping and in the patterns it has at least one from this year that being the pyjama top. We were all talking about the silky/satin they were using, the pyjama top in the book is described as a satin pyjama top so I'm guessing that they only fabric they had for them was of the satin variety. There are a lot of really good patterns and I can't wait to get started on some of them.

I agree. Patrick raised an eyebrow, so Marcus asked Luke for another opinion. Luke agreed with Patrick, so Marcus changed, and the new choice met with approval.

Remember that Japanese skirt pattern with the curving seams? That was difficult. Men's trousers with a fly zip? A lined coat? The origami dresses?

I've just looked at the Japanese skirt episode- they had 3.5 hours to make it in. All 4 sewers finished to a fairly decent standard. I really can't imagine this year's group managing that at all.

FriendsDrinkBook · 07/07/2024 06:57

@SoupDragon yep. They know that only 2 of them would finish these kind of tasks to a high standard.

The first task that year was a striped bias cut top , they also had to make a men's shirt with pin tucks for the final pattern challenge iirc. That series really had talented sewers/sewists.

Wilma55 · 07/07/2024 21:16

It's on Wednesday again this week and next. How many more weeks are there?

Wilma55 · 07/07/2024 21:18

Just seen semi final is 17th.

lollipoprainbow · 09/07/2024 21:01

Doesn't look like it's on tonight 🙄

Norugratsatall · 09/07/2024 21:03

Nope! Have been looking forward to this all day. Bloody football! Will be so glad when it's all over...

Same

As I was bang on, last week, with my prediction of one bra cup an inch higher than the other (Suzy's transformation), these are my predictions for this week. Quotes, this time.

"As a drag queen, I make a lot of clothes fit for a diva."

"Glamorous clothes like these are not my thing."

BiscuityBoyle · 10/07/2024 19:34

It’s on tonight. ITV have the football tonight.

NeedWineNow · 10/07/2024 20:33

Going to have to catch up on tonight's later as DH has commandeered the telly for the football, but was very interested on reading Mum's TV mag that the semi finalists next week will have to do designs based on Balenciaga, Jean-Paul Gautier and inspired by Coco Chanel. That will definitely be one to watch!
