What is good about Bridgerton?

I need a really good series to get into whilst I recover from surgery (a shoulder replacement)

I don't normally like period dramas. I never got into Downtown Abbey (wasn't even tempted to start it).

But I keep hearing people talking about it and I'm tempted whilst I have 6 weeks off work.

What is good about it?

It's not really a period drama because it's not true to the time, uses modern music etc.

It's perfect recovery viewing I'd say - easy to watch, light, fun. DH wouldn't be into period dramas or romance but he happily watches it.

Completely mindless vaguely regency inspired romp. It's good fun. I've not read the books, people online are getting very serious indeed about the characters and deviation from the books. Then they post pictures of pages and they read like fanfic thus confirming that my decision to not read the books is an excellent one. What's not to love?

I totally misread the OP and thought it said Bridlington….

it’s cheap and there’s a huge sandy beach and free parking.

WayMeanWood · 15/06/2024 14:06

It's escapist fun with beautiful people and costumes! There's no need to analyse anything, it's entertaining and enjoyable.

Springwatch123 · 15/06/2024 14:08

Escapism and some good looking blokes (shallow!).

virgocatlover · 15/06/2024 14:12

It's nice escapism. But it's not historically accurate in anyway.

I’ve never watched any other period drama but stumbled across Bridgerton the other week and love it! Definitely give it a go.

TBF cheap and easy fun applies to both Grin

I'd say that recovery from major surgery is the perfect time to watch Bridgerton. Give it half an hour and you'll soon find out whether it's your sort of thing. Abandon any expectations of historical accuracy before you start: that's not the game it's playing. And don't watch it while the kids are in the room - there's quite a lot of sex.

Queen Charlotte, the prequel series, is more serious and "better" though perhaps less convalescence-friendly.

Other good/rubbish shows/films on Netflix to watch while convalescing: The Diplomat, Girls5Eva, The Lost City (Sandra Bullock), The Good Place.

mollyfolk · 15/06/2024 14:20

The costumes & the music & the fun of it. It’s very light. Proper escapism. Perfect for recovering.

Miley1967 · 15/06/2024 14:22

I think it's a bit overrated to be honest. I do still watch it though !

SiobhanSharpe · 15/06/2024 14:24

Hot heroes, quite a bit of adventurous sex, and feisty heroines (Kate Sharma, series 2. Also Anthony Bridgeton, series 2 again.)

siameselife · 15/06/2024 14:28

It bears no resemblance to a period drama.
It is a very light romance series with fun clothing and pretty backdrops.

Hatecleaninglovecleanhouse · 15/06/2024 14:30

I love it.

It's more an alt-history story - Regency if a lot of things were very different.

Some interesting characters, sumptuous sets and costumes, bit of humour, easy watching.

soshelpsos · 15/06/2024 14:31

Oh it does sound like perfect recovery viewing!
The kids are at a party at the moment so I'll watch ep 1 and report back!

Glad it isn't a serious period drama as I just can't ever get into them.

Save for race equality, series 1 was a bit more of a period drama.

Series 2 is when it started to shift more towards a romance series with pretty clothing.

It’s all really good though!

The alleged sexy scene was..... Crap. Yes she goes bubs out, but it wasn't exactly bouncing and rollicking. Mind you only on the episode where the daft girl declares she is the thingummyjig.

Awrite · 15/06/2024 14:46

I watched the first episode when it came out and thought it boring. Just couldn't get into it.

I don't know. I assume the show has quite a young audience, and I thought it was quite a sweet depiction of a fun but consenting first time.

The carriage scene was more out and out sexy!

JurassicClark · 15/06/2024 14:52

Lots of shagging, lots of empire line dresses (poor Lady Bridgerton’s bosom is crushed to squashed most uncomfortably), ludicrous dialogue, gloriously mad wigs on the queen, some feisty women and hot blokes.

Eat biscuits, drink tea, disengage your brain. And feel better soon, OP

Penfeatherington · 15/06/2024 15:11

Penelope ❤️

She's a brilliant character.

Bridgerton is pretty good fun, light-hearted romantic romping - not at all historically accurate. The costumes are stunning.

Kentishtownie · 15/06/2024 15:15

I preferred Queen Charlotte but enjoy the froth of Bridgerton. I've listened to about half the series on audiobook it doesn't bother me when it's a bit different.
