Has anyone watched? Apologies if there is another thread - I did look.

What did people think? Harvey Keitel was incredible.

I watched the first episode today. Very harrowing, especially the bits with older Lali haunted by the people from the past.

QueenOfTheEntireFuckingUniverse · 05/05/2024 17:12

I've watched 3 episodes so far. It's definitely one of the better Holocaust programmes I've watched
Harvey Keitel is outstanding.

Pieceofpurplesky · 05/05/2024 17:21

He really is. I binged it in two nights. It's harrowing and does justice to the book

What a harrowing but moving account. How anyone can find kindness in them is beyond me. I just keep being amazed by how one human being can be a totally deranged psychopath whilst at the same time, other persons in such awful inhumane conditions can find a way to be kind to others at risk of not just death but excruciating pain to them themselves. Love the actor who played young lali and oh those dimples!

Lovewine1975 · 05/05/2024 17:52

I'm on episode 2 it's very harrowing and hard to watch at times, what a story though

Pieceofpurplesky · 05/05/2024 18:02

They are magnificent dimples! He was brilliant in World on Fire too

Harvey is great but why does his younger version not have an accent whereas he does??

JT69 · 14/05/2024 21:33

A hard watch but I’m glad I did . Just finished it today. All the actors are incredible.

Pieceofpurplesky · 15/05/2024 17:12

They really are. Harvey Keitel in particular - and the actor that played Baretzki was perfect

Just finished it. Was absolutely blown away especially by the last episode. I knew how it ended as I’d read the book but wow. The acting was superb.

JT69 · 17/05/2024 13:38

I’ve finished it now. I’m glad I be seen it as it was so well done. We must never forget .

TammyJones · 19/05/2024 12:23

Watching it now.
One episode to go.
Very well made.
Harrowing but worth watching.

The younger one spoke both German and Russian in real life as well as Yiddish. We didn't need to hear him with an accent then. The accent when older is to reflect his heritage.

It's a very interesting work. It is of course only one person's view of what happened dimmed by years and memories. It has been criticised by others. It shows the things that people had to do to survive and how he felt guilt about surviving when so many didn't. His relationship with the German features highly. It turns out in real life though that he was an utter bastard. It's so complex and had us talking for days about it. I have read more about women and pregnancy in the camps and it is brutal.

Oblomov24 · 28/05/2024 09:35

Thought the film was ok. The book itself was considered poorly written (a bit like Fifty Shades), and was criticised. I found the character Lali quite unlikeable, not very endearing. Both the fabulous actors Keitel and Hauer-King were good, but couldn't make me like him.

What did he do in real life to make him an utter bastard?

raspberryberet7 · 16/06/2024 18:59

@dollybird I'd be interested to know this too

LadeOde · 16/06/2024 21:00
