I quite like this programme.
I wonder if they visit all 5 properties in one day? It seems a lot of filming to fit in. They always seem to have the same clothes on as they go from property to property so that’s why I’m assuming it’s all done in one day. 🤔
It’s only the end part which must be the next day because they give them overnight to think about what they want to do.

I think they are out there for 5 days but for continuity are asked to wear the same clothes.

the80sweregreat · 29/03/2024 09:30

It is a bit ' watch one episode and you've seen them all ' sometimes , just different locations
They also seem to want the big old millionaires mansions for under 100,000 k and close to everything , but not too close etc.
I don't mind tuning in though although I'd never be able to have a place abroad myself !
The presenters are nice.

martinisforeveryone · 29/03/2024 10:12

I haven’t watched it for ages, but it always fascinated me how at the apartment complexes there was never a sign of anyone else, the swimming pools and all around were so peaceful. Very hard to get a true picture. They very rarely mention service charges or community fees either. That always annoyed me.

the80sweregreat · 29/03/2024 10:43

Yes, Lots of taxes in Spain to find for community fees and management fees and all sorts. I'm sure other countries do as well, but it's barely mentioned.
Many don't want to live there full time , so they may want to rent it out?
Or like someone I know whose in-laws lived on a Spanish island for decades but had to come back when they became poorly as there wasn't the infrastructure for them to live without any kind of help / carers etc.
All airbrushed away to just ' oh, lovely to see the sea view with a glass of vino'
Or the family they want over to visit
( maybe they don't want to go there every year ?! Lol )

CountTo10 · 29/03/2024 11:33

Must admit it I love to watch it and play 'Place in the Sun' bingo.

The people are generally deluded and really don't think long term. At least one of them has a health condition but no thought about how that will be managed in an unfamiliar health care system.

They never speak the language and seemed determined to surround themselves purely with expats.

They want somewhere 'where all the action is' so they don't need a car but then complain the property found is 'too noisy'.

They want something 'traditional' but when they see it claim it's 'not to our standard' and it'll need it load of work to get it to 'our standard' generally meaning turning it into a modern grey box.

They want a mansion despite having a £50000 budget. They always want at least 2 to 3 bedrooms so the family can come and stay but eventually compromise on a one bedroom with the magic sofa bed in the living room which manages to accommodate a family of 4!

As someone else said does the visiting family want to be tied to the same destination every year to stay in a cramped house/appartment.

They base their final decision on whether the pool has a toddler/baby area despite the fact kids grow really fast and in a couple of years won't be relevant but no they can't possibly buy the perfect property because there's no toddler pool. (For the famiky who may or may not ever visit).

Everyone single programme some imagines themselves drinking a morning coffee or sipping wine on the balcony.

I have seen a lot of the programs mentioning site fees though but only one stating that according to site rules they couldn't rent out the apartment and another that barbecues weren't allowed.

I did wonder that!

@CountTo10 we play too. When in Andalusia, for example, they always complain windows are small and interiors dark and kitchens too small. The reality is that this keeps the place cool and you won't want to cook indoors much of the time.

Bargain priced French properties don't have UK style fitted kitchens.

The worst bit is when they really like somewhere enough to make an offer, but make a toe-curlingly lowball offer then decide, often for the sake of a relatively small amount, they won't up their offer to what the seller has indicated they want. Unsurprisingly this "technique" often fails, but they stubbornly walk away.

deeahgwitch · 09/08/2024 09:11

When oh when will there be a new series ?
I record it to watch in the evening but they are always repeats so in the first few minutes of watching I have to delete the recording. 🙄

drivinmecrazy · 09/08/2024 09:27

This program drives me nuts!
My DM lives in Spain in a wonderful house in the countryside and this is her 'go to' afternoon tv watching.

No idea why she even watches it.

But she spends the whole episode screaming at the TV.

Madness!

Toddlerteaplease · 15/08/2024 12:17

Watched an episode the other week. The woman of the couple had a face like a slapped arse, when her ridiculous offer was rejected. They wanted a huge price cut, as well as central heating installing and a load of other stuff doing. The vendor came back with a reasonable counter offer. But she wasn't budging. I wanted to throw something at the TV.
Do you need central heating in Spain?!

Toddlerteaplease · 15/08/2024 12:18

I'm now watching a new life in the sun, on Ch4. And it all seems like relentless hard grind! I don't envy them one little but!

FirconeTheCat · 13/09/2024 13:46

Why do they always put in a much lower offer “because the house needs work to bring it up to our standard”. In this country you make a lower offer but basically to buy it for what it is!

deeahgwitch · 14/09/2024 09:31

Why do they not do US holiday homes anymore ?
I can understand during Covid people wouldn't/couldn't travel.

jennylamb1 · 14/09/2024 09:40

I love it, mainly because it fulfils my winter craving for sunshine as well as providing some property porn. It is very formulaic, however I think that this is part of the addiction for me I think. Quite like it when Laura Hamilton becomes visibly angered when a couple who have been spouting platitudes throughout all the viewings won't put any offer in.

I always think this. They always say they want to put in a lower offer because they want to put in aircon, a swimming pool, put in a new kitchen etc. Surely the house is priced to take those things into account in the first place? I wouldn't be dropping a £10000 house to £70000 because you want the extra money to put in a swimming pool!!!

BarmyFotheringay · 14/09/2024 10:34

Makes me laugh when they show an elderly couple a place in a quaint village with a really steep incline and/or spiral staircase up to the first floor. Why?

jennylamb1 · 14/09/2024 11:11

Some seem quite unrealistic themselves too, the woman who'd retired early due to illness with her mother in a wheelchair, buying a remote house in Spain half built into a cave.
I did wonder if residency rules have changed since Brexit too, not sure how easy it is to retire out there nowadays.

25soexcited · 14/09/2024 11:15

It’s the end of the program that is so staged with the calls to the agents who always refuse first offer !! Cringey 😬

Iloveshihtzus · 14/09/2024 11:18

I know I sound like a total snob but as well as playing A Place in the Sun bingo, like the others here, I click off if the budget is below €150k. I don’t want to see a load of awful pokey flats with yellow tiles on the floor - my granny had a better interior in her farmhouse in the West of Ireland in the 70’s.

I also don’t understand how a couple who live in a very tiny house in the UK think they will fund a retirement abroad? And finally, as mentioned, space for visiting family that turns out to be a sofa bed😱 - do you know any adults who go on holiday to their in-laws to sleep on a sofa bed in the living room??

jennylamb1 · 14/09/2024 11:27

I did love the episode with the Scottish gran who essentially wept her way through the whole program. She'd brought her kids up and worked hard all her life and was constantly stunned at the opportunity of having a lovely retirement in the sunshine.

deeahgwitch · 14/09/2024 14:37

I have to lower the volume on the tv when a couple decide to buy a property that they have viewed with Jasmine.
Her squeals of excitement are just too much. 🙄
You'd think that after all this time presenting the programme she might get a little bit used to couples deciding to purchase a property. Smile
