Did anyone see this film last night? Blew me away. Absolutely amazing, Oscar winning performance from Sir Anthony Hopkins. His performance in the last 10 minutes had me crying 😢.

Also Olivia Coleman excellent as his daughter.
A film about dementia, but not sentimental and seen from the patient's perspective. More like a psychological thriller.
I also watched an interview on Youtube with Hopkins and Coleman. The interviewer asked if Sir Anthony carried the character with him after filming and did he base it on anyone he knew. Loved his answer which was basically I just turn up and act! No need to go through agony and angst - it's all in the script!

I saw it a bit ago on channel 4
It didn't live up to the hype for me

Very hard watch. Fantastically made, you actually feel you're in his pov

I loved it too. Saw it a while
Back on a streaming service. Might watch again though I found it incredibly sad Great twist on the story

Yes, I loved it.

I thought the writing was absolutely incredible, so brilliantly done. The script so often gets overlooked and the actors take all the credit in film and television.

It was beautifully done. Writing and acting.

The end part about 'losing all my leaves' captured something I've been thinking about a lot recently - the way seemingly nonsensical statements by people with dementia can sometimes make perfect sense if you view them as a form of poetry.

This reminded me of reading an account of Laurence Olivier filming Marathon Man with Dustin Hoffman.

DH, who was a Method actor, apparently spent hours filming the final scene in a freezing water tower, asking for multiple takes, while LO kept saying "Just act dear boy".

Dh father going through similar so didn’t want to upset him but I do want to watch

Terfosaurus · 01/03/2024 00:57

I watched it last year and sobbed. Especially the line about losing all his leaves. Such a good film.

whiteroseredrose · 01/03/2024 01:51

DH and I watched it last year. His father and were both diagnosed with dementia, but his DF was definitely confused. He talked 'nonsense' most of the time.

It was so powerful to see life from his perspective.
