Our Flag Means Death. It's utterly brilliant and I am obsessed!

I'm sure I found a thread on this series a while ago, but now season 2 is out I've looked back and I can't find anything apart from the renewal petition.

For anyone who hasn't come across it yet, I would thoroughly recommend. It starts off as a sort of workplace comedy set on a pirate ship, sort of in the style of Ghosts, and with a similar fanbase to Good Omens. When the 2nd lead character arrives at the end of episode 3, it starts to change and it only hit me two thirds of the way through season 1 that I was actually watching a very different sort of show to the one I thought I had started watching.

From that point it's phenomenal. The attention to detail is superb. Both leads are clearly neuro diverse, from abusive backgrounds and damaged because of these. They both want what they think the other one has. It's about them discovering themselves, accepting themselves for who they really are, and healing. There is comedy, but also heartbreak and despair. The show handles these so sensitively and accurately, down to minute details, and Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby deserve every award under the sun for their work here.

I don't think I've ever obsessed about a show as much as this one. I've tried to make this not too spoilery in case some of you want to watch it, but really I just want someone to talk to about it! I've already watched it countless times and the more I rewatch the more I appreciate it. I said I was obsessed and I really am!

The show has sadly been cancelled, despite its popularity, and the producers are currently trying to see if it will be picked up by another network. I have read that they are keeping an eye on the iPlayer numbers as part of this, so I also wanted to shamelessly plug it here 😁

If any of you haven't seen it and fancy giving it a try, it grows into itself in the first season and you really need to give it at least 4 episodes (episode 4 is where the main story really starts). Its not a show I would have thought to watch myself (DD wanted me to watch it with her) but I'm so glad I have.

I don't really know what I want from this thread really. I want more people to find it, but I also want to just talk about it and obviously can't do that without more spoilers than I've already given. Help me out people!

I shall start again at the beginning forthwith and pay attention properly this time. Maybe shut the cats out as they kept miaowing over key bits of dialogue...

Watching with subtitles on once cleared a couple of things up for me too!

Watched Fun & Games, and then had to watch “Curse of the Seafaring life” .. I just love the end “You wear fine things well”, and then the handhold ❤️

This is my problem. Once I start I can't stop 😁

Well taika is certainly very handsome and looks good in leather which helps my enjoyment but really it's his expressive face that is the best thing. He conveys so many emotions but my favourite is when they are sitting on the sofa at Mary and Annie's and he just looks at stede with such hope and love

CarlaH · 02/04/2024 17:17

Fun and Games really is the episode where Taika knocks it out of the park. I watched it yet again half an hour ago (when I really should have been preparing dinner).

Now I know it is an homage to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf I enjoy it even more (I was a bit confused by Mary and Annie before that).

TriceratopsRocks · 02/04/2024 18:57

I love Taika's expressions in the first "you wear fine things well" scene, when he's already head over heels for Stede, but Stede is oblivious. But although Taika is undeniably gorgeous, actually I grew far fonder of Rhys Derby over the course of the series. The recent Hugh Jackman thread was fun. Give me Rhys any day!

If we're only talking about acting, then Taika's performance in this was absolutely stunning. I've no idea why he didn't get the recognition I think he very much deserved.

@CarlaH wow! I can see that now. I learn a lot on Mumsnet every day.

I'm definitely going to try with subtitles. Then I can enjoy the soundtrack.

Chrysanthemum5 · 02/04/2024 19:40

Ah @CarlaH that makes that episode easier to understand - it seemed so peculiar

Phineyj · 02/04/2024 20:13

More peculiar than the rest of it?!

Phineyj · 02/04/2024 20:13

Which is not a criticism.

Chrysanthemum5 · 02/04/2024 20:25

Yes for some reason the rest of the peculiarities were just things I went with 🤣

MsAnnFrope · 02/04/2024 20:30

Ahh I just came by to say “you wear fine things well”.
bloody love it

user8800 · 02/04/2024 20:33

Ahhhh....
I have found my people!
😀💙

Phineyj · 02/04/2024 20:37

I liked the Crocs.

I feel that if an actual C18th pirate came through a time portal, those would be a modern invention that would need no justification at all.

Phineyj · 02/04/2024 20:40

Taika W is certainly beautiful (and a fantastic advert for tattoos) but it's Rhys' face for me that's the most interesting to watch. It's so expressive. You can see that in the backstage Instagram reels someone linked to earlier.

ExtraOnions · 02/04/2024 20:44

Taikia’s acting is great .. never seen him act before, now wondering why he’s not done more.

When he reverts back to Blackbeard, his depressed, angry acting is superb

Con does a brilliant job as well.

Phineyj · 02/04/2024 20:53

Con is great! He has a lot of presence in scenes even when he's not speaking.

Phineyj · 02/04/2024 20:58

I do like the "gravy boat" sequence. Poor Ed/Blackbeard. His subconscious really hates him!

TriceratopsRocks · 02/04/2024 21:07

Before OFMD, the only thing I had seen Taika in was Free Guy, where his plays the main baddie, who is (to quote Ed) a bit of a dick. After Our Flag, I watched What We Do in the Shadows (film), and I really love Taika's character in that. I have a watchlist now with various shows of both his and Rhys'.

Con was amazing. I read something about Con as a dramatic actor being nervous at first around all the improv-ing comedians, and the comedians being nervous about having to do serious acting with Con. But it passed and they all got on great :)

And welcome to the thread @MsAnnFrope and @user8800 :)

And Con's singing is the most glorious thing

Phineyj · 02/04/2024 21:16

What is Con's accent, by the way - his own, which from his bio is Wigan with a hint of Brizzle? I thought it was Northern Irish to begin with but then I am the person who took Kiwi for an American attempt at English Blush.

Phineyj · 02/04/2024 21:20

I've never seen any of these people in anything before (except Minnie Driver - who looked like she was having a ball). Oh and Ewen Bremner, although I've only just realised where from (Trainspotting).

user8800 · 02/04/2024 21:25

Con is a liverpudlian I think?

Check him out in dancin thru the dark (80s film)

user8800 · 02/04/2024 21:25

Oh!
And Telstar.
Incredible performance
