Our Flag Means Death. It's utterly brilliant and I am obsessed!

I'm sure I found a thread on this series a while ago, but now season 2 is out I've looked back and I can't find anything apart from the renewal petition.

For anyone who hasn't come across it yet, I would thoroughly recommend. It starts off as a sort of workplace comedy set on a pirate ship, sort of in the style of Ghosts, and with a similar fanbase to Good Omens. When the 2nd lead character arrives at the end of episode 3, it starts to change and it only hit me two thirds of the way through season 1 that I was actually watching a very different sort of show to the one I thought I had started watching.

From that point it's phenomenal. The attention to detail is superb. Both leads are clearly neuro diverse, from abusive backgrounds and damaged because of these. They both want what they think the other one has. It's about them discovering themselves, accepting themselves for who they really are, and healing. There is comedy, but also heartbreak and despair. The show handles these so sensitively and accurately, down to minute details, and Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby deserve every award under the sun for their work here.

I don't think I've ever obsessed about a show as much as this one. I've tried to make this not too spoilery in case some of you want to watch it, but really I just want someone to talk to about it! I've already watched it countless times and the more I rewatch the more I appreciate it. I said I was obsessed and I really am!

The show has sadly been cancelled, despite its popularity, and the producers are currently trying to see if it will be picked up by another network. I have read that they are keeping an eye on the iPlayer numbers as part of this, so I also wanted to shamelessly plug it here 😁

If any of you haven't seen it and fancy giving it a try, it grows into itself in the first season and you really need to give it at least 4 episodes (episode 4 is where the main story really starts). Its not a show I would have thought to watch myself (DD wanted me to watch it with her) but I'm so glad I have.

I don't really know what I want from this thread really. I want more people to find it, but I also want to just talk about it and obviously can't do that without more spoilers than I've already given. Help me out people!

Ed Teach wouldn’t put his signature on anything, to stop it being forged & copied

That's so nice, I'm glad. Now you just have to persuade him that he really does like multiple viewings after all :)

I did suggest it this morning and he just went 'hmm' so you never know.

He, like me, had never heard Roads to Moscow before. It's a period of history that interests him and he loves it. Shocking to think it's over 50 years since it was written.

Another excellent point. So now I have 3 good explanations and I'm more than happy to go with any of them :)

Ooh there is is hope then! I know I got a lot more out of the show on 2nd (and 3rd, 4th, 5th etc...) viewing. I think if you like a show it's always worth multiple rewatches because you do spot things you had missed. I mean, the first time I watched I genuinely had no idea that Stede and Ed would end up as a couple, and when they first met I genuinely thought I was watching the sort of 'bromance' we've seen on our screens a thousand times - I was just as oblivious as Stede was! So as soon as I had finished S1 I had to go back to the start and saw the whole thing again with totally different eyes. And @ExtraOnions noticed something new only yesterday, and I'm sure she must be on her 1,359,273rd rewatch by now!

Sadly my DH still isn't interested in even a 1st watch :( He clearly has no appreciation for "fine things".

So sorry your husband won't play ball. I agree that upon rewatching you see so much more and indeed made that point to my husband. However he doesn't have a great memory and, in reality, doesn't really 'watch' TV in the same way that I do. It mostly washes over him so, if we do watch again at some point, he won't be picking up things he didn't see before.

I don't think I picked up on where it was going with Ed and Stede until Lucius's 'this is happening'.

That was the same for me too - an "oh, is this what I think it is?" moment. And even then it wasn't until the next episode that I was positive - sometimes I can be really slow!! I mean, their expressions in the first "you wear fine things well" scene should have told me everything. When I looked back on rewatch it was so patently obvious, but I'm just not used to seeing such a beautiful romance played out on screen between two middle aged men, and I wasn't expecting it. Now they are probably my favourite on screen couple ever (although it's a close call between the BBCs Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy, and Buffy and Spike!).

I have literally just finished watching 'you wear fine things well' and this time I saw the look in Ed's eyes. So easy to miss if you don't know but so obvious once you do.

TriceratopsRocks · 04/04/2024 17:37

Ed's expressions in that scene are wonderful. Once you know, he is clearly so head over heels in love with Stede. I read something somewhere that described it as Ed knowing he was in love, and going from "Oh, and he's seducing me" (which had probably never happened before - who would try to seduce Blackbeard so romantically?) to "Oh shit, he doesn't know he's seducing me" in about 30 seconds flat! It's definitely one of my favourite scenes for showing Taika's stunning acting.

I watch at least 1 episode a day .. I’ve started to pay a bit more attention to the background goings on, which is why I’m picking up on stuff ..

The bit for me that doesn’t make sense is when Ed leaves the ship (you’re no fucking mermaid) he is half dead, and not coherent .. yet within a short while he’s talking to the rabbit making perfect sense, and by the time he bumps into Mary Read, he’s back how he was. I can’t help but think that something was missed out

TriceratopsRocks · 04/04/2024 21:47

I hadn't really thought about that. He's definitely incoherent when Buttons is talking to him at the start, but by the time he left the ship after the vote I thought he seemed more angry than anything else. He's annoyed when he gets off his row boat (happy when talking to the rabbit, despite hating nature), and then annoyed with Stede when they first meet up at Anne and Mary's. The bit in that episode that seems slightly off to me is Stede's attitude in that meeting. I'd have thought he'd be really pleased to see Ed away from the ship and crew so he could apologise for having to banish him (Stede putting his crew first again), but instead he sort of mirror's Ed's passive agression. Thank goodness their comments to each other sparked Anne and Mary's interest and they decided to have a bit of fun and invite them both for dinner! When we first see them inside I love how they start off sat as far away as possible from each other on the couch but then Stede starts to move a bit closer while Ed is still firmly wedged in his corner :) I so love the blanket couch scene though, when they finally get to talk. It's a wonderful episode.

I'm starting another rewatch tonight because it's been a while since I've seen everything in the right order :) Episode 1 here I come!

Fun thing I noticed on Ep 1 rewatch - towards the end when Olu and Lucius are talking about Captain not actually being that bad (they are fed, paid and don't work too hard), Olu says "After all, would you be captained by that?" as the camera is on Frenchie sticking his tongue out at the hostages. I assume it was planned all the way back then that Frenchie would be the new captain at the end of S2 and I thought it a lovely touch.

I think I am just going to believe that quite a bit of time passed while they did the vote and arranged the complimentary dinghy allowing Ed to recover a bit more.

I think that Ed was still pretty angry - hence the 'you're no fucking mermaid' comment. He might have been saved by Stede but as yet had nowhere near come to terms with the fact that he had been dumped with no idea why.

I think Stede's attitude might have stemmed from the fact that he was still smarting (maybe literally) from the headbutt and possibly a bit confused as to how to behave with Ed after Button explained about the gravy basket.

I'm not sure there is a social protocol for "near death experience followed by trip to antique shop".

In other news, I'm off to the seaside.

Sadly not to the resort with the pirate themed crazy golf...

I have just finished my re-watch of Season One. As Mary was confirming that Stede was happy to renounce all his wealth a thought did occur to me.

How is he going to continue to pay his crew a salary?

TriceratopsRocks · 07/04/2024 19:17

Ooh good question. Maybe the 'small amount' (I can't exactly remember what he said) he took for his own needs in S1E1 was still large enough to last him a very long time? I mean, he was exceptionally rich. And by E10 he didn't think he needed any more? Although I'm not sure what will have happened to it in S2. If it was still on the Revenge I suppose he may still have it.

If the delayed Instagram live between Kristian and David ever happens we could send in all our questions. I am still peeved that no panels/promotion happened for S2 because of the strike

ExtraOnions · 07/04/2024 19:31

They are at Basingstoke Comicon, if I was within striking distance I would be there .. Con, Rhys, Vico, and Kristian. There is a big OFMD event in the Friday night

Not seen them at any other UK comicons

TriceratopsRocks · 07/04/2024 20:33

It's only a couple of hours from me and the pirate pass does look awesome. But I can't really justify the £250 for that. Not when DD would want to come too. £90 each for entry and photos with Rhys is rather more tempting! I just haven't convinced myself yet (we are supposed to be saving after a new kitchen a few months ago).

if I have a win on the Lottery this week, I’ll get us tickets @TriceratopsRocks 😂😂😂

I was really looking forward to that one. I hope they do reschedule it but I'm fearing that it may have fallen by the wayside. Please Kristian prove me wrong 🤞
