Feminism is dead and we're old at 38- Grumpy Old Women

What a crock of utter, total, absolute shite.

Shows how much our patheitc society values the female of the species- we're old at under 40 and Christmas is exclusively about kids and shopping. Did I miss something?

Hula, my comment about the meal definitely wasn't directed at you - just took me a long time to get around to posting..

Twink · 21/12/2004 23:14

Last one from me tonight, promise, what was all that crap about having to dust Christmas cards & decorations - eh hello, they're only around for about 4 weeks !

PaRumPumPumScum · 21/12/2004 23:29

DUST Xmas cards?!?!?!? Thankfully I missed that bit. I might have choked on my red wine.

Oh. I was planning to watch Grumpy Old Women cos I did laugh a lot at Grumpy Old Men. It certainly beats watching Rick Stein being rotten grumpy when he is supposed to be showing you how to cook halibut.

But unfortunately I was out at the pub with my dh and Christie's dh taking part in Christmas pub quiz.

Did they mention that women do get to go out sometimes?

mullgedwine · 22/12/2004 01:55

PMSL at the comment re women at office do's dressing up as Santa's elves or female santa's in short skirts - how very true! heard the bit about dusting Xmas cards, and relegated it to the "we don't do this" bit of my brain.

ernest · 22/12/2004 09:09

I thought some of it was very funny, esp taking the p* out of men re tree. we just had that exact senario at our house - dh must have spent over an hour hacking at the bottim with a swiss army knife (eye rolling emoticon)

merrymarthamoo · 22/12/2004 09:20

I forgot to watch it but saw in the Radio Times that one of the woman on it was the other "Birds of a Feather" women - ie., not Pauline Quirke (can't remember her name). She's 46 - that's not old! I was talking to dh about it and I said "why aren't they having some genuinely old people on it?" and I guess it's because there just aren't that many older women on TV - they put them out to pasture as soon as the wrinkles start to show.

Came up with Moira Stewart (but she has obviously made a pact with the devil as she shows no visible signs of ageing despite being in her 60s), Stephanie Cole, Anna Ford (is she in her 60s too?), and...erm...see what I mean?

Can't think of many really old ladies on TV...how old is Dot Cotton?

Was Toyah Wilcox on it? She's not that old but she will be on anything on TV - talk about rent-a-gob!

WideWebWitch · 22/12/2004 09:35

Well, quite, merrymarthamoo, re not many 'older' women in the public eye. There must be some though. Err, mustn't there? Surely? I didn't see this but wish I had just so I could join in slagging it off here

WideWebWitch · 22/12/2004 09:36

And we're definitely NOT old at 38, we're in 'middle youth' I do believe!

Enideepmidwinter · 22/12/2004 09:40

I thought it was funny in parts (particularly the men not doing anything except the tree - is just like that in our house) but also felt very smug that my Christmas doesnt really follow that model and that we actually use it as a time to relax and enjoy ourselves as a family.

Did think the 'old' part was a bit of a cheek - and found Jane Moore really irritating especially as I don't have much respect for her writing either.

TheHollyAndTheTwiglett · 22/12/2004 09:49

didn't see it

but for some reason just remembered what one of my mates told me

seems her grandmother who was 83 (so I think classified for a GOM ) only ever gave her one piece of advice

There are only 2 things you need to remember about men, never learn to cook

and

wait for it

what do you think she said?

she was 83 remember

never learn to give oral sex

(because if you do, you'll always be doing one or the other)
(she's my hero)

merrymarthamoo · 22/12/2004 10:34

That is fantastic, twigs - you just made my day

merrymarthamoo · 22/12/2004 10:35

WWW, you don't have to have seen it to slag it off. I didn't and I'm not letting it stop me

Enideepmidwinter · 22/12/2004 10:38

Wish I'd had that advice 20 years ago

Tinker · 22/12/2004 10:41

Did find some of it funny, very reminiscent, reme, er, similar to my parents Christmas, especially teh man coming in smugly on Christams Eve with just a few bags. Also, Twink, I regularly tell my mum it's only a roast dinner only to realise this makes my mother turn into a gorgon.

Snap at the IKEA wines glasses.

MaryChristmas · 22/12/2004 10:47

I found it funny as I was wrapping pressies on the floor as my dear hubby was relaxing with his paper.
Now talk about art imitating life!

StNickschik · 22/12/2004 10:48

Saw it was on and thought about watching it but forgot - started wrapping Xmas presents and then persuaded dh to watch the first Bridget Jones on video with me insead - he actually laughed at it a lot so he's now an honorary girlie - he didn't think much of that though! What can a bunch of pampered celebs tell me about Christmas and being a woman that I don't already know!

MaryChristmas · 22/12/2004 10:50

It might actually sink in to the watching hubbies coming from celebs mouths, more than us spouses going on at them.

Hulababy · 22/12/2004 13:39

MaryChristmas · 22/12/2004 13:47
