Mr Bates vs The Post Office is a hard-hitting ITV1 drama starring Toby Jones, Monica Dolan and Julie Hesmondhalgh among others.

The series details one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in British legal history, where thousands of Post Office sub postmasters and postmistresses were wrongly accused of theft, fraud and false accounting due to a defective IT system.

Mr Bates vs The Post Office follows Alan Bates (Toby Jones), a sub postmaster who decided to fight back against a scandalous miscarriage of justice.

He was one of thousands of sub postmasters and postmistresses who between 2000 and 2013 were falsely accused of theft due to financial discrepancies thrown up by the flawed Horizon computerised accounting system.

More than 700 were prosecuted and several went to prison while others lost their homes and life savings trying to pay back the money the Post Office claimed was missing.

Many were unfairly ostracised from their communities, who believed they were criminals.

In 2009 Alan Bates decided to form the Justice For Subpostmasters Alliance (https://www.jfsa.org.uk/), uniting thousands of his colleagues to
fight to clear their names.

A few years ago we got rid of a stack of DHs old Computer Weeklys If we still had them i would be going through them to look for articles on this

Sisterpita · 02/01/2024 21:54

As far as I am aware every computer system has a back way in to resolve issues. However, I always understood that the system records which user has made a change, entered data etc. It’s why you never share passwords as that is your defence if you are accused of making changes. So the fact the Post Office denied this for so long is shocking.

A good example is NHS patient records - employees who access patient records are logged. If someone looks at a record without a clinical need to do so they can be dismissed for breach of GDPR.

purpleme12 · 02/01/2024 21:54

So this pin pad wasn't available for evidence as it was reprogrammed!

Sisterpita · 02/01/2024 21:56

It would be lovely if Fujitsu and Post Office managers were held to account but sadly it’s highly unlikely they will be prosecuted. Its very difficult to prove managers culpability.

The likelihood is a loss of reputation but a new well paid job.

purpleme12 · 02/01/2024 21:58

So the post office and Fujitsu wiped evidence that he visited Fujitsu!!

JenniferBooth · 02/01/2024 21:59

@Sisterpita there was a thread on here fairly recently where Mners have it in their patient records that they are alcoholics when they are not and cant get it changed

That shocked me. It's the kind of cover up that you would expect in a conspiracy thriller.

ThePoshUns · 02/01/2024 22:04

I think what I'm finding upsetting is like the post masters , I am conscientious and fastidious in my job and scared of making mistakes.
I can't imagine how terrified I'd have been in their shoes.
I feel so angry on their behalf that this still isn't resolved.

Sunsetboater · 02/01/2024 22:04

This is so triggering for me..
I bookmarked this thread yesterday to remind me to watch the programme. I've just watched the first episode and thought I'd come back here to catch up.
My god... I didn't realise SAP was the system behind Horizon.

I'm 59 now but back in 2012 I was working at a company that introduced SAP as their back office system with Salesforce as the front office. I recall being absolutely gob smacked at the time to learn, during the training, that the 2 systems weren't fully compatible. The training was horrendous. I'm not one for keeping quiet and so when certain aspects of the product just didn't make sense I questioned it repeatedly. Eventually I was shushed by my manager(s) as I was holding up the training and 'go-live' date which as an unrealistic 2 weeks from implementation. There were so many problems that I ended up leaving 12 months later along with about 3 others including my manager.
I realise my experience is no comparison to anything like what the SPO's were and still are, being subjected to but, 2012 was the start of all my on-going work related health anxieties.

Even today, whilst job hunting I shudder if I see a company uses SAP.
The older I get the more cynical I grow and despair at the amount of corruption in the corporate world... Those elite fuckers at the very top of the corporate ladder are absolutely CORRUPT EVIL MONSTERS and trickle their evil over all they touch!

purpleme12 · 02/01/2024 22:08

Wow watching this gets worse and worse
They had no evidence to take Jo to court and no right to take her to court!

purpleme12 · 02/01/2024 22:12

If I didn't know this was true I'd find it hard to believe

beguilingeyes · 02/01/2024 22:12

Not only is there no accountability for these monsters, most of them still collect huge bonuses and tend to fall upwards.
Or in the case of the police at Hillsborough, retire unscathed on 'health grounds ' on a fat pension.
Today they're on about chasing people who sell on Vinted for tax while Michelle Mone is still in the HOL.

Yes @purpleme12

If someone said to you / me can you prove you were at xyz 4yrs ago

Could you do it ?

Esp if the place deleted your arrival

A family member of mine was subjected to it, maybe 20 years ago now. Killed her short term memory, intensified her eating disorder and there was nothing we could do to stop it.

At top level they love people with no scruples or morals. They get headhunted by other companies if they’re sacked. It’s revolting. It’s always the front line/lower level staff that take the hit. ☹️☹️

Hi @Sunsetboater I have no idea if SAP has anything to do with Horizon but as tenants of a HA that uses it we were constantly being chased for rent we did NOT owe. Payments were getting missed lost or misattributed The system didnt understand HB payments but as payments were going missing you could have paid them a million pounds and they STILL would have said "you havent paid your rent" I HAVE tried to find out if anyone was made homeless because of this.

JenniferBooth · 02/01/2024 22:19

And falsification like this can affect your rent record so if we need to move it may well cause problems

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/01/2024 22:26

@jay55 so sorry to hear that 💐

That’s awful. I would have hoped with GDPR they could get it corrected.
