Mr Bates vs The Post Office is a hard-hitting ITV1 drama starring Toby Jones, Monica Dolan and Julie Hesmondhalgh among others.

The series details one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in British legal history, where thousands of Post Office sub postmasters and postmistresses were wrongly accused of theft, fraud and false accounting due to a defective IT system.

Mr Bates vs The Post Office follows Alan Bates (Toby Jones), a sub postmaster who decided to fight back against a scandalous miscarriage of justice.

He was one of thousands of sub postmasters and postmistresses who between 2000 and 2013 were falsely accused of theft due to financial discrepancies thrown up by the flawed Horizon computerised accounting system.

More than 700 were prosecuted and several went to prison while others lost their homes and life savings trying to pay back the money the Post Office claimed was missing.

Many were unfairly ostracised from their communities, who believed they were criminals.

In 2009 Alan Bates decided to form the Justice For Subpostmasters Alliance (https://www.jfsa.org.uk/), uniting thousands of his colleagues to
fight to clear their names.

There was a man on lbc with Nick Ferrari ( I think it was an MP or a former MP who was featured in the drama ) and he was saying that they have to be careful with any changes to the law over this as it might bring forwards other cases that are unrelated to this and start to set a precedent ( although he agreed that something needs to be done and fast )

Just seen a post office life cover ad. It made me bristle!

Link?
I'd be tempted to "apply", waste their time/lives.

Rummikub · 10/01/2024 20:18

Wow learning more about this case and Gareth Jenkins really needs to be held accountable, he provided evidence on behalf of Fujitsu which resulted in so many unjust prosecutions!

Jo’s solicitor represented another spm Rubina. And she is fuming about the info that was withheld. Stating she would‘ve advised her clients differently if she had known.

The internal horizon/ post office documents are all about protecting the business.

Rummikub · 10/01/2024 23:18

The post office was costing the tax payer £3 million a week

Rummikub · 10/01/2024 23:22

They’ve got martin’s wife on

Here's a link to what looks like the transcript of the Seema Misra case.

I'm not a lawyer.

Can anyone advise if the fact it is 'Regina vs' means this case was brought by the CPS rather than the Post Office?

Thanks.

Paul2023 · 11/01/2024 00:00

Does Paula Vennells have no shame ? A man committed suicide because he was hounded and persecuted..

She was supposed to be a priest ! What kind of person is she ? !

I don't know, but there's this in the transcript:

Thank you .

It's odd because that suggests the CPS were actively involved in unjustly sending a pregnant woman to prison in 2010, when Kier Starmer was at the helm.

But the Labour spin doctors are saying he has no questions to answer.

I doubt they are ever wrong - or do I recall something about 'weapons of mass destruction'?

Fujitsu is a toxic company even now, who knows if Gareth Jenkins was 'pressured' or felt pressured to give that evidence back then. Bullying and intimidating behaviour went on and is still going on relating to the Post Office Account and wider Fujitsu organisation. There will be more Whistleblowing outside of the official Horizon Inquiry about Fujitsu and how it and it's leadership operates.

Sisterpita · 11/01/2024 03:04

As they said on Sky News it’s really the Fujitsu Post Office Scandal.

yep, the beeb breakfast show special should have had the Fujitsu logo alongside the PO one.
Have not even heard a "we asked Fujitsu- no comment" or whatever on any report. Are they being asked anything?
How the hell are they managing to lie so low.
Thanks by the way to the mnet tellyaddict crew - if I hadn't spotted this trending the prog would have passed me by when first shown.

Fujitsu is going to hide behind the Horizon Inquiry all year. Prosecution witnesses for Fujitsu are giving evidence next week and their European CEO, Paul Patterson is answering questions in front of the Business and Trade Select Committee. Fujitsu won't pay any recompense to the sub post-masters or contribute to any compensation scheme unless they've been ordered to do so and that won't be until late this year/early next year with the Horizon Inquiry judgment. It is a zombie company, only surviving on its public sector and government contracts. No reputable or forward-thinking private company would touch it with a bargepole.

That is not the full transcript. It is a summary based on the transcript with one or two excerpts.

Any criminal trial in the Crown Court is "Regina vs" regardless of who brings the prosecution. The prosecution is regarded as being brought on behalf of the Crown.

This article describes the prosecution barrister as "briefed by the Crown Prosecution Service". However, that seems to be a misunderstanding by the person who wrote the summary. All the evidence I have seen is that this case was brought by Post Office with no CPS involvement.
