Wasn't sure where to put this so thought I'd try here!

Does anyone have this?

How does it work?

Was just browsing & for some it says "rent".

Is this an extra cost on top of the subscription?

I was hoping that if you subscribe you just click on what you want to watch & there's no limit?

Never heard of this, but sounds interesting (as someone who never goes to plays!)

It says this on the web site:

Subscribe for unlimited access from £9.99 per month or pay for a single play.

laughingnow · 07/12/2023 17:36

Yes, pay the subscription and watch whatever you like. It’s excellent value I reckon.

QueSyrahSyrah · 07/12/2023 17:38

We used to have it and is was very good. We treated plays with more gravity than a film (lights off, phones away) to try and get the theatre feeling. Made up for not being able to get to the theatre as much as we'd like for a time.

Good grief I missed that, thank you!

I was thinking about doing a month or two to see if it's worth it for me.

Is it easy to cancel?

OP posts:
IwantToRetire · 07/12/2023 17:50

Haven't gone back to the web site, but from memory I think there is a monthly rate that is higher than paying upfront for a year. And suspect if you cancelled that they would just charge you the monthly rate.

diddl · 07/12/2023 18:01

Yes I am worried about things being difficult to cancel.

OP posts:
IwantToRetire · 07/12/2023 18:10

Its farily standard isn't it for organisations to offer a lower rate for any annual sub, that for someone who subscribes monthly.

So its more do you think you will want it for a year, and if not pay a higher rate for each month you want it.

I've done it with a couple of streaming services and not had a problem.

Slightly different, but if you are interested in film you can sign up to Curzon Home and just pay for each film, at bit like when you got a video from a video shop!

AgentProvocateur · 07/12/2023 18:12

Sorry to be thick - how do you get this on your TV? (ie, where do you find it?)

LaurieFairyCake · 07/12/2023 18:13

Also interested

laughingnow · 07/12/2023 18:30

You sign up just as for Prime or Disney or Apple TV. You can pay a tenner each month for as long as you like or do an annual direct debit for £100.

Presumably if you do the annual they take the money every year until you cancel the same as with the monthly subscription?

I think I need to have a good browse & see how much I really am interested in!

How to Watch (taken from web site)

Watch at home or on-the-go, on any internet browser or through the National Theatre at Home app, available on iOS, Android, Amazon Fire TV and Roku TV.

I have in the past had subs to online services (ie no apps, no smart tv) and just use a (quite long) hdmi cable to display what is shown on my computer monitor onto my tv.

We used it during covid for theatre mad DD. she watched a huge amount. A wonderful resource.

Every now and again we get it for a month if there's something we want to watch. Super easy.

laughingnow · 07/12/2023 20:02

They gave notice several weeks ago that I could cancel before mid Dec when it will automatically renew if I don’t want it. New productions are added regularly and they warn you if something is going to become unavailable. It’s a lot cheaper than a trip up town!

diddl · 07/12/2023 20:13

Well yes.

I'm not in UK so it would involve a flight first!

I was about to say better check whether they provide a service outside of the UK. But found this:

National Theatre at Home is available worldwide and can be watched on any internet-connected device through your web browser, or on the National Theatre at Home app via iOS, Android, Amazon Fire or Roku TV. You can choose to subscribe by the month, year or just rent a single play.

That seems a good value for the year. Do you know if the subscription can be shared? My mum would not be competent to use and watch the service regularly, but she would enjoy the occasional showing. I on the other hand would probably devour most of the output. So it is not worth paying for 2 separate subscriptions. We do not live together.

diddl · 07/12/2023 20:27

the annual sub was down to £ 70 instead of £100 to celebrate their 3rd birthday.

If that was for new customers I'd sign up now!

Yes I am worried about things being difficult to cancel.

I don't remember it being at all difficult to cancel, no more so than any other streaming sub.

To the PP who asked about sharing, I don't know if it's strictly allowed, but my cousin used my log-in to watch Prima Facie in a different country to my own, no issue.

diddl · 07/12/2023 21:37

It does say that they limit the number of devices that can be used.

To what I don't know!

Presumably your Mum would just have to log into your account and press watch.

Would they know that she's in a different location-or that it's not you at a different location?
