When I broke my shoulder I got codeine but that was because someone went up to a nurse and said "Will you look at the poor woman, she's in agony, give her some pain relief for god's sake!" and they did.

Have a little bit of abdominal surgery and you (well I did) get sent home with a bottle of liquid morphine. Can recommend. Not the surgery but the drugs!
