And if you've now seen it, what are your thoughts?

I'm predicting I will love it no matter what. But look forward to discussing it.

Some of the best writing came from Capaldi's era. Heaven Sent, Listen, Extremis, and many more. Capaldi was also a brilliant Doctor. A superb actor

So many seem to loathe him as the Doctor and his whole era. He was one of my all my favourites and as i’m in my 60s I’ve seen all of them - the good, the bad and the absolutely unforgivably dire. PC had a wonderful world-weariness and humanity as well as presence and gravitas. He was everything the character should be imo. Some of the writing at that time was truly excellent.

Dr Who has always had a strong moral compass and sense of fairness, ethics etc. I agree with those who said this was woven seamlessly into the characterisation and writing and not literally rammed relentlessly into every scene, scenario and character. It’s clunking and takes the joy out of it.

This episode was based off of an old doctor who comic story. In the story, Rose is played by a black girl and its about appearances being deceptive. Ie the cute fluffy alien actually being evil.

In the TV adaptation they've taken an opportunity away from a black girl and given it to an adult male who by the way "passes" (I noticed straight away) because this person has been on cross sex hormones for years and possibly had feminising surgery.

No 14/15 year old kid would look or sound like that unless they'd been having treatments privately and illegally.

This is utterly irresponsible and fails kids because they will think they can "pass" and get treatments when they can't.

Also, this is the same writer that wrote queer as folk which included a very graphic scene involving a child (15) being shagged in the arse by a much older man.

I think this episode was an utterly travesty and I'm furious this was the best the BBC could come up with for the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who.

Cracking post, completely agree.
There was a LOT of eye- rolling here with the whole "binary/non-binary" thing and a huge LOL at Donna's admission that Rose can't act (that had to be intentional, surely?!)
I always enjoyed the DoctorDonna relationship and thought that David Tennant and Catherine Tate had great chemistry so I liked their scenes but the rest? Meh.

So rose was Jason?

Surely they should of used a trans actor, it didn't come across very well at all. Just shit. I miss Moffat, now he could tell a story!

They did use a trans actor.

They did use a trans actor, Yasmin Finney is a transwoman. Very tall, broad shouldered and strong jawline - once you see it you can’t unsee it.

Yes it was most odd

Could she not have been just Rose and female in the first place.

Drwhattf · 25/11/2023 22:58

Agree as well, ery well put.

Rose was previously called Jason, yes

They DID use a trans actor

Well, I loved it apart from the pronouns bit. I loved The Doctor and Donna back together. I loved the tribute to Wilf and that he’s still alive in the Whoniverse. I’m really looking forward to the next couple of episodes.

Me too, I enjoyed it and will keep watching.
Although I knew nothing about it beforehand, I spotted the Trans character immediately, so obvious

Womencanlift · 25/11/2023 23:15

I do love DT so was looking forward to this but I thought it was really poor and didn’t have the humour that the Dr and Donna had before. The first episode that Donna comes back and sees the Dr while Sarah Lancashire looks on always makes me laugh

I didn’t even notice Rose was trans until the pronoun bit was pushed on us - I also thought sound was poor and didn’t hear what the boys were shouting at her outside their house. I assume it was something related to that? Plus the whole binary/non binary bit was lazy story telling

I did like when the Gremlin (some definite copyright infringements going on there), sorry Meep, went crazy.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 25/11/2023 23:17

@Womencanlift

They were shouting Jason at Rose, presumably their old name

LuckyFlickerman · 25/11/2023 23:17

Can someone spoil it for me - is Rose gone now? Were they a plot device/alien/whatever all along? Ta. I refuse to watch sexist propaganda.

Ah ok thanks. I wondered why everyone was talking about a Jason as I didn’t hear that bit

Unknown.

The TARDIS is on fire and only DT and CT are in it, don't know how many episodes Rose is in but unlikely next week.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 25/11/2023 23:21

Not a plot device or an alien.

Disappointed that my comment was deleted... I was stating a fact - it is an adult male playing a teenage girl. And under the Equality act 2010, I am allowed to believe that sex is biological and immutable, people cannot change their sex and sex is distinct from gender-identity.

Absolutely no idea what you are on about, but clearly Shakespeare was screwed with his Juliet....

Loved seeing DT back in the role, have been a fan since the first ever episode. Amazed that people can stoke up so much negativity. It's TV. If you don't like it, switch off. So many people seem to have watched it to find something to bitch about, knowing in advance that they would. Life is too short to watch stuff you know you won't like...

Delpf · 25/11/2023 23:21

I didn't watch the whole thing, but I thought it was ok and that the acting was the usual standard - Dr Who is meant to be hammy! The Meep was SO cute and MM did a great job. I loved Donna's husband. Do agree that Rose as a teenager was completely unbelievable (I know you can get tall 13 year olds, but short is usually TV shorthand for young, plus the heavy makeup didn't help. Would have been better to cast a different actor/to somehow handwave it and age the character up) but the character was likeable and I think the actor did fine.

ScremeEggs · 25/11/2023 23:30

Not that obvious then, clearly

Coolstorysis · 25/11/2023 23:31

Tbf it held my attention unlike a lot of recent who. Apart from the awful resolution to the doctordonna problem (wtaf that was so handwavy and ridiculous) I feel like it was really clunky, and saccharine in parts. If this is what RTD is happy to return with I'm not optimistic.

He always had campy and over the top moments, but his characters felt like actual people and mostly had excellent dialogue. I will probably still watch but my rose tinted glasses have lost their hue.

HamsterBanana · 25/11/2023 23:36

Oh I can't unsee it now that Yasmin is trans now I've rewatched some of it.

I really hope Rose isn't in the second & third episode.
Just seems the whole episode was to be "look at us we have trans characters!"
It was fine before with Jack & the lizard character because the whole episode didn't evolve around their sexuality.
Still disappointed.

Coolstorysis · 25/11/2023 23:38

I have also seen trans people on reddit who felt the "woke" bits were condescending rather than feeling represented (others loved it). Quite a few people hated the "you wouldn't understand you are a man" line, which is brave of them, the who forums on reddit are the pinnacle of toxic positivity.

Elentwelvedoc · 25/11/2023 23:42

Just been thinking about it and realised I didn't like the new tardis interior or the sonic!

It's gone all space age, star wars style. I like the quirky retro feel of low budget Doctor Who.

I like that his only weapon isn't a weapon but a screw driver that makes a sound. The jokes that 'it doesn't do wood', how it breaks regularly.

The new one is too high tech for the Doctor.

And the tardis interior is too big. And far too bright. It's not quirky.

Coolstorysis · 25/11/2023 23:42

Same @HamsterBanana but maybe it will pick up. I felt like the line about rose not being able to act was a bit weird (seeing as she is a bit planky) very odd tone Confused

You never even noticed when you watched it until you came on here and realised 😂
So seemingly no problem there. Enjoyed the show.
Now it's oh no a trans character, how "look at us with our trans actors and I really hope she isn't in the next episode now I know she's trans"...
For goodness sake 😬

I'm sure I read somewhere that RTD said Rose would be back. Possibly even in the new series. Not as a regular but as a guest at times. Can't find where I read it now.

But no-one in Shakespeare's day thought the actor playing Juliet was actually a girl.

Any more than they thought the actor was actually dead at the end of the play.

It's called willing suspension of disbelief
