And if you've now seen it, what are your thoughts?

I'm predicting I will love it no matter what. But look forward to discussing it.

I love it when they visit a historical figure so happy with the newton scene

and the space ship part was properly creepy and based on Japanese horror so I’m sure the under 12s found it scary. I’ve enjoyed these two episodes - felt more written for children so reminded me of watching DW as a kid

Pinkbox · 07/12/2023 09:30

Ah OK thanks for the explanations about the gravity wordplay. We will wait and see!

BigDahliaFan · 07/12/2023 10:49

RTD is setting up for a big going to change the whole premise of Dr Who thing with the next episode...

I'd honestly rather they just got on with a rollicking good adventure....

TripleDaisySummer · 07/12/2023 11:17

Also I think the Doctor sprinkling the salt has something to do with why the universe has changed but I don't know what.

I thought it was a nod to Granny Weatherwax in Carpe Jugulum - imposing superstition on the Vampires that thought they'd evolved past because everyone knows they have these weaknesses- but yes they did suggest using superstitions at edge of universe would have implications.

GardeningQuestionTime · 07/12/2023 13:14

Russell T. Davies in Doctor Who Magazine: "...there will be controversial events in [The Giggle]. If you watched the commentary on iPlayer, I unroll a whole new #DoctorWho mythology for you, based around the events taking place... The commentary will have information that will rock the world... it's a whole new way of of looking at the history of Doctor Who and I can't wait to see the reaction."

Oh great.

OneMoreStepAlongTheRoadIGo · 07/12/2023 13:30

Oh. Not sure I want it completely changed!

Ocani · 07/12/2023 13:40

Well that definitely has the potential to be shit.

AnImaginaryCat · 07/12/2023 13:40

Yes, the Doctor invoked superstition (that their doubles couldn't cross sprinkled salt) at the edge of the universe and the implication is that the universe has been changed.

Bold move for a writer, changing everything!

TripleDaisySummer · 07/12/2023 14:04

TBF they've rebooted the entire universe before with Ponds - and timeless child shit fucked up the previous established cannon - but yes the idea it doesn't fill me with excitement and anticipation just concern.

It's not like I don't like franchises being played with - I like Lower Decks and enjoy Strange New Worlds and some of the new Star wars stuff like Mandalorian though a lot been very poor - there is just a worrying modern pattern of writers treating older material and fans who like material with contempt - hopefully it won't be that but something exciting.

thirdfiddle · 07/12/2023 17:17

Doctor Who has a long standing tradition of rewriting its own history in the more meta stories. I don't mind that.

Yes, first time since David Tennant left, couldn't be doing with the ones after him.

You should watch the Matt Smith series'. He was a fantastic Doctor.
I've been completely underwhelmed by both 'specials' so far. aside from DT and CT being back there's been nothing special about them. The 50th Anniverary episode was glorious.

OneMoreStepAlongTheRoadIGo · 08/12/2023 15:17

I really didn't like Matt Smith! Loved David Tennant and christopher ecclestin though and have hopes for Ncuti.

greengreengrass25 · 08/12/2023 15:35

Loved Matt Smith

CaveMum · 08/12/2023 17:27

I loved Matt Smith (disclaimer - this may or may not be linked to the utterly FILTHY dream I had about him a few months into his roll as the Doctor 😜). That but at the end of his first episode where he stares down the barrel of the camera and says “Basically: run!” makes me go all tingly each time I watch it.

He was the perfect mix of manic, childish and, at times, contempt. For me anyway.

StBrides · 08/12/2023 17:57

Matt Smith made a great doctor but I didn't enjoy the long running story lines, the doctors wife and the whole thing with his death on the beach and the Pandorica. Shame cos great casting all around.

Springcleaninginsummer · 08/12/2023 18:05

Matt Smith also managed to convince me that he was ancient, wise and weary of life at times. Quite a feat of acting from such a young man.

thirdfiddle · 08/12/2023 19:52

I like there being long running storylines. I generally like how the doctor and river song bounce off each other. I really disliked the episode that got them married, it was weird and coercive and self important on both sides.

SequinsandStiIettos · 08/12/2023 20:23

I loved River Song and thought what was compelling was the actress, Alex Kingston, had the most beautiful chemistry with David, Matt and Peter. She was vivacious, beautiful and charismatic but chemistry isn't always a done deal: yet with all three actors, you believed in the rapport.

I agree. I really loved River Song ( I use anagrams of her name for a lot of my Internet passwords!) and loved her rapport with sll 3 Doctors. I landowners loved the Doctors wife! Just goes to show. Matt Smith is slowly incredible in House of the Dragon.

pickledandpuzzled · 08/12/2023 20:40

Yes, River Song’s the bees knees.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 08/12/2023 21:50

I think I'm in a minority here, but I couldn't stand River Song! I didn't think she had good chemistry with the Doctor at all. I found her insufferably arch and OTT.

I couldn't stand her

Pinkbox · 08/12/2023 22:25

River generally annoyed the hell out of me but I do like the scene where she meets Capaldi’s Doctor

CaveMum · 08/12/2023 22:42

I just rewatched The Eleventh Hour again on iPlayer. Such a good episode, and a masterclass from Matt Smith.

Yes. Quite an achievement. I thought he would be a disappointment after DT too. How wrong I was. He brought, for me, a new dimension and new depths to the Doctor which felt as if at last! we had got to the essence of this strange and immensely powerful alien.

I remember looking into his eyes one time as he spoke something very dangerous very softly, and actually shivering. Oh my god - here was an alien in human form! A revelation.
