And if you've now seen it, what are your thoughts?

I'm predicting I will love it no matter what. But look forward to discussing it.

I don't understand why you'd want people to move away from DW. If you think people need 'educated' then it would be better to keep them watching and bring them onside.

I thought tonight's was a bit meh tbh. Probably because the 'guess which one is real' reminded me of umpteen Flash storylines and the two-hander harked back to Heaven Sent. I like David Tennant and Catherine Tate but still think Peter Capaldi was better at commanding an entire episode alone. I do think there were scenes tonight where Tate acted Tennant off the screen - which is unusual. The other thing I didn't like about tonight was it seemed to reassert that the Timeless Child is canon - which makes me sad. I was hoping for a retcon. Although as DH said, they could still retcon it in a later episode.

Canon. Retcon.

Lost me.

I enjoyed this week's far more.

So did I!

Not sure if you're serious or not Grin
But in case you are - the timeless child storyline changed the Doctor's origin story and lots of fans (including me!) hated that change.
Some fans hoped RTD would provide some clever alternative meaning for those stories from Chibnall's run (ie retconning - revealing something that changes the interpretation of something that happened earlier) but tonight the entire conversation about the Doctor not being from Gallifrey referenced the timeless child. So he was reasserting it as canon (canon is the official storyline).

Or the entity (remind anyone of House btw)had read the Doctor’s mind for whom the timeless child stuff is still new and unanswered - doesn’t mean it’s not going to be resolved/put right

MelsMoneyTree · 02/12/2023 23:57

Yy it might be retconned on a later episode. Fingers crossed.

5foot5 · 03/12/2023 00:58

Oh what a lovely surprise that they had Bernard Ribbons. Never expected that. This was a good episode.

Had there ever been ' Dr Who, the musical ?'
' is that a darlek I see ? '
'Where , over there 'etc?

Yes there has. Well sort of. A stage show, Doctor Who – The Ultimate Adventure, with Jon Pertwee had musical interludes.

CaveMum · 03/12/2023 09:36

Well surely in true time honoured fashion DW needs a Musical Episode a la Buffy 😜

TeenDivided · 03/12/2023 10:03

That was a much better episode.

Considering how heavily its influenced by Buffy, I'm really surprised there hasn't been one yet. Can Ncuti sing? I think he's more classically trained than musical theatre but maybe he'll finally give us the musical episode we deserve.

Yes DS1 was furiously Whatsapping his Whovian schoolfriends ( one of whom cried about it the first time it came up-they were 13 at the time! ) about the Timeless Child/ Flux business!

Weirdly I have noticed that stage shows get a pass that TV doesn't. It's like we assume that because it is on TV or film it must be more accurate (even when it's sci fi or utterly inaccurate historical drama). I noticed the same thing when they had a black Anne Boleyn in a TV show v. SIX the musical which also has wives of Henry VIII who aren't white.

I can't decide if it is because people expect to suspend disbelief in theatre or because the people complaining about TV shows aren't the same people who go to the theatre performances.

I suspect people who complain about this type of thing are looking for things like this to complain about. He was a small part of the episode. His race didn't play a part in the telling of the story, and we also don't call gravity 'Mavity'. Its an alternative universe thing. Theatre has a long history of 'colourblind casting' (its not called that anymore but I cant remember what its now called) Much longer than TV. I was also the Mamma Mia programme and thought that as the last series comes down purely to the audience vote they will pick the two people who look most like Dominic Cooper and Amanda Seyfried, no matter who is the best singer/actor.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 03/12/2023 10:57

The words canon (in the context in which you are using it) and retcon are completely new to me. I have now googled and enlightened myself.

I liked the episode, although I agree with you about the Timeless Child/ Flux nonsense and hoped it was gone.
I think Tennant has made a mistake coming back, especially considering it doesnt look like they are going to do do a multi Doctor anniversary celebration as has happened in the past. He was always going to be compared to the first time he did it, but now he's older and more creaky It just seems like a 'celebration' of Tennant and Tate rather than 60 years of Doctor Who. I first thought the 60th anniversary would be too big a thing for a new Doctor to take on but they have barely done anything about it apart from sticking old episodes on iplayer and replaying some stuff they did for the 50th anniversary.

OneMoreStepAlongTheRoadIGo · 03/12/2023 11:20

We loved it. I love David Tennant and it's so nice just to have a sel contained fun episode.

As for pronouns... Did they just assume gender from sex 😏. Who knows what the captain went by...

Ugh, please no - hate musical episodes of TV programmes, they're so cheesy and cringe!

Ginmonkeyagain · 03/12/2023 12:04

Tenant has agend oddly - he looks over made up or tweaked some how. That is no way his natural hair colour.

Yy Dh, DC and I were talking about it last night. It's as though the new separate episodes with the old doctors are the nod to the anniversary. But bringing Tennant and Tate back is all they are doing in the series. Perhaps it's because Disney is involved now and they don't want to hark back to a pre-Disney time too much. The 50th created an expectation there would be more.
And I get that RTD loves Tennant but I find it a little odd that they thought that casting was enough fan service. He isn't everyone's favourite Doctor (and having rewatched new Who with the DCs - I liked him much less on a rewatching and think Smith and Capaldi are both better) and he is no longer a teen girl magnet so doesn't even bring a new demographic with him (which he did somewhat first time round). I do like that Tennant is playing the Doctor differently and you can see nods to Capaldi and Whittaker - I haven't spotted any Matt Smith references yet but tbh I've not watched either of the two episodes that closely so might have missed them.

I'm convinced it's a wig, when you see it up close it doesn't look like real hair to me!

Ginmonkeyagain · 03/12/2023 12:45

Matt Smith is my favourite modern Dr Who. I think he was more "Dr Who" than tbe others - he was more alien, ignorant/contemptuous of human social mores and at times even cruel.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 03/12/2023 14:01

It was a better episode- it focused on being Dr Who rather than a sermon. Great to see Wilf back.

Don’t understand people getting wound up about Isaac Newton being played by a PoC in a programme about a 2 hearted alien who flies through space and time in a police box. It’s not a documentary!

ConspiracyFeary · 03/12/2023 14:05

Capaldi was an underrated Dr let down by the writing

He's the favourite in our house too. I fovrecogj8se the music fro the Smith era, but that may be because when DS1 was young we rewatched the episodes so many times the music is burnt unto my brain!
Re Disney's influence, I hope they have learnt their lesson from ruining Marvel but somehow I doubt it!

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/12/2023 15:12

I loved both of them and can't wait for the next one.😍
