Just finished the fourth and final episode.

LOVED the book. Wanted to LOVE the adaptation - it had such promise: stellar cast, strong creative producers and the trailer looked good.

I was pretty disappointed - anyone else watched it? I'd be interested to hear from people who hadn't read the book as perhaps it came across better as a stand alone thing?

Anyway. I'm pissed off that I didn't love it.

Just finished this and was extremely disappointed. Why do tv people feel the need to dumb down and alter so much from the original, treating viewers like 12 yr olds??

It may as well have been any war story written for tv as it completely deviated from the excellent book. Stupid stuff like explaining what happened to the father (I don't remember that once getting explained on the book, he just disappeared and that was that - exactly what would have happened in reality to many people during and after the war). Plus the caricatures of the SS/gestapo - I'd find it fucking tiresome if I was a german to see that sort of portrayal.

And don't even get me started on the ending the Netflix show gave it. Confused

It's being discussed on Radio 4's In Touch (today 9pm) - just listening, slightly delayed now.

I haven't read the book. Is Daniel supposed to be French? Why does he have such a weird accent?

FloweryFlump · 30/11/2023 20:58

I haven't read the book but thought the Netflix series was dreadful. It was stilted and self indulgent almost to the point of caricature.

It’s our latest book club book and I wasn’t looking forward to reading it, in fact didn’t intend to, but reluctantly binge-watched the Netflix series last weekend. It was okaaaay given I didn’t have a reference point or any expectation. The lack of French accents was weird.
In our book club (7 women friends) we are able to opt out of reading a book I it’s entirety providing we give it a go. I must say it has forced me to broaden my horizons and read stuff I otherwise wouldn’t.

I actually really enjoyed it. I had read the book but don't remember too much detail - I thought that there were some things in the series that were very different.
However, as a standalone TV series it was good, with an almost filmic quality. It took me ages to work out where I had seen Werner before (he is Jonah in The Dark).

The book is complex, beautiful, full of nuance and very moving. The adaption was utter bilge, resorting to comedy Heir Flick types and relying on the viewer who has read the book to be filling in the massive gaps in the storytelling (when they are not yelling at the screen about things that are not int he original story).

I used to love Mark Ruffalo, but after the terrible adaption of I know This Much Is True, and now this, I am done.

Smidge001 · 09/12/2023 10:02

Mark Ruffalo was beyond awful. And his accent was so distracting.

Deadringer · 09/12/2023 13:01

God yes I love Mark Ruffalo but he was just awful in this.

My daughter’s friend was in it as the little blonde girl!!
