I can't find any comments on this but did anyone here watch last night's documentary on his year long ordeal going through awful treatment for his neck and mouth cancer? I found it so moving.

I haven't watched it yet, but will. I love him (and fancy him a bit).
John Diamond, Nigella's first husband, wrote a book called Cowards Get Cancer Too which detailed his treatment for mouth cancer and it's one of the most horrifying things I've ever read. What that poor man went through.

Justmuddlingalong · 31/10/2023 11:01

I watched it. Very honest and raw with lovely bits of humour. A tough watch but really recommended. Have tissues handy.

I remember it being announced he had been diagnosed but then he was no longer on screen (other than repeats) and knew it was obviously his treatment which was very private. Not knowing he had filmed so much of it I chanced on the documentary last night. Not much gets me emotional and almost tearful but that one did. Hoping he is cancer free but he will be fearing the future with this.

I cried buckets watching it, I love rhod Gilbert, he’s so funny.

but I also thought how great is it that the media are using the success stories to show how people can survive cancer. The treatment looked so brutal and to see how scared he was really hit me in the gut, it’s probably the first time I’ve watched a programme like that and immediately donated to the cause.

Nowthereistwo · 31/10/2023 13:31

Loved the programme, very well balanced.

My mum, dad, step dad and FIL all have had serious diagnosis of cancer (ovarian, lymphoma and bowel) and unfortunately FIL died.

Knowing how poorly the chemo makes you is brutal. Luckily Rhod, mum, dad and step dad have all made it through.

Cancer is definitely lurking around the corner

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 31/10/2023 13:36

Excellent documentary. Poor Rhod, though. Such an awful experience for him. And so brave to talk publicly about it.

BigPussyEnergy · 31/10/2023 13:38

Yes. Bawled my eyes out, bless him. Reminded me of my dad and the treatment he went through for a brain tumour. The mask and worrying he was going to vomit with it on. Cried for my dad and for Rhod for being so honest and open about it all.

KimberleyClark · 31/10/2023 13:43

He also deserves credit for being so open about his fertility issues. It’s a difficult thing for most men to talk about.

OutOfSyncWithReality · 31/10/2023 16:18

gosh that was hard to watch. The treatment was brutal. Poor Rhod, and everyone who has walked this path 🙏

MyCircumference · 31/10/2023 21:23

Such an emotional watch, also a big fan, also watched the John diamond series which was excellent but not a good outcome, I couldn't face the mask

Bettybupe · 31/10/2023 23:21

His treatment was gruelling and I doubt we saw the worst of his suffering on screen. Now I understand why some patients say no more chemo etc. 😔

I watched this earlier today. My dad had the same treatment for a head cancer and it really is brutal especially as any sore in your mouth is amplified combined with the need to swallow. Luckily the treatment is very effective for many people because I really don't know if my dad could have gone through another cycle of the same treatment. It really did nearly break him.

GodspeedJune · 01/11/2023 00:21

Thank you for posting about this, I hadn’t seen it and my dad had this type of cancer. It’s a gruelling treatment, however it does fortuitously have a high curative response to treatment.

afrikat · 01/11/2023 00:24

Not watched it yet but I will. Saw Rhod in one of his first years at the Edinburgh Festival and I've loved him ever since. Such a funny, sweet guy

Blamethecat57 · 01/11/2023 01:18

I cried.
One of my best friends went through all the treatments.
How hard it was for her will always stick with me.

Thank god for the NHS. And the wonderful people who work there.
