A question about Boiling Point. Have I missed something?

I'm watching Boiling Point for the first time. Series 1, episode 1 on iplayer. However it feels like I'm missing something because the alcoholic ex chef is at home.
Is there a whole backstory I've missed?
Thanks.

There’s a film, also called Boiling Point, which came first. Confusingly it’s not on iPlayer, but is on 4 on demand.

LeatherJacketWedding · 18/10/2023 11:36

Yes there’s a film that precedes the series. It’s on iplayer

Aah, bollocks. Am I ok to keep going with the series, or am I going to have missed too much?
Appreciate the replies.

I'll just crack on, as I'm enjoying it so far. I hate the music throughout though, and would be happy for it not to be there.

There's actually 2 films, confusingly. One is/was on iPlayer and the other on netflix.

Carly's mother is so bloody annoying.

Was shown the Saturday before this started on film 4

I haven't watched the other ones just the BBC 1 9pm Sunday ones.
The stress in that kitchen. Shock

I watched the film before starting the series. You just get the backstory to the main characters. I think the short film (30m which I haven’t watched) preceded the long film?

I found it hard work. There was lots of hammy acting and everyone has a sob story. But I suppose there is only so much drama the can create around the theme of cooking.

It was like a soap opera rather than a drama.

Agree - was surprised it was so lauded - terrible over the top acting by so many usually great actors. I especially find Carly and her pep talks cringeworthy.

I think the point of the film was it was shot in one take which for 92 minutes is pretty impressive. The opening scene for the series was also a one shot take lasting 11mins.

headcheffer · 20/10/2023 06:19

The film is on iPlayer

Fulshaw · 20/10/2023 06:49

I’m confused. I read there was a film so we watched it on Prime. It was about 30mins long and ended with him collapsing in the floor.

Was there something else I should’ve watched as well?

Netaporter · 20/10/2023 07:16

@Fulshaw the 30min film was a short Stephen Graeme did as a favour to the director who was an actor he’d worked with previously. As it was well received they expanded it to the 92min one.

Theraffarian · 20/10/2023 07:40

Personally I’d go back and watch the long film , otherwise as the series goes on you miss a lot of the back story to scenes . Although I wouldn’t say any of it is the best .

JMSA · 20/10/2023 09:11

Ok, so now I've watched it all: long film, short film, series. And not in that order!
Loved it, especially the series.

I also really liked it and think you probably do need to watch the films to get the context and why Stephen Grahame is so emotional in the series etc.

However, I also watched both seasons of The Bear a few weeks before and I thought that was better, this maybe suffered in comparison. It felt like 'The British The Bear' (even though it must have been conceived before I think?). But perhaps I watched them too close together so was slightly suffering from 'stressy kitchen-based' fatigue.

Thanks for clarifying! I watched the short one and have just finished the series. So seems like I missed the bit in the middle which was the long film. Explains why I didn’t know what they were referring to half the time.
