TV shows for 8-12 year old that won't have the adults crying inside

Just that really! Looking for TV/film recommendations (on any streaming service) that grown-ups & kids of this age can enjoy together. We loved Wednesday & Heartstopper and looking for a similar boxset or films we can get stuck into for Autumn. Nothing too cutesy American (we're not fans of the Descendants)

Mysterious Benedict Society is SUPERB - and entirely suitable for 8 year old.

StormzMe · 29/09/2023 20:13

Taskmaster 'bleeped' is very good - they bleep out swear words and nakedness etc and it is still very watchable (and funny!) as an adult.

One Piece on Netflix. It's quite peculiar in places

LifeofBrienne · 29/09/2023 23:28

If they’re ok with the scary bits in Wednesday, we’ve been watching all of ‘modern’ Doctor Who from the beginning. And watched all three His Dark Materials series this year, which were brilliant.

Young Sheldon ! We all loved it as a family and have just watched the last series.

does it match sheldon from the big bang theory guite well ?

Mountaineer0009 · 29/09/2023 23:44

Mi High from bbc

Wallabyone · 29/09/2023 23:51

Following-I'm currently rewatching Ghosts with my 11 year old and now my 9 year old is watching along with us!

Jim Parsons does the voiceover, which ties it in very familiarity, but they make the show their own, it’s very believable and good supporting cast. I was a bit sceptical of a spin off but it’s really its own show.

The mandalorian

DeathStarCanteenGal · 30/09/2023 00:20

from about 8 my DD loved Just Add Magic on Netflix, and also Lemony Snicket
we've also watched - and recently rewatched - Home Before Dark on Apple, which is good
currently doing Ghosts and Buffy with her, now she is 12. Buffy is rated 12 and I don't think I would have watched it sooner because it has quite teenage themes, and is quite violent in places, DD does literally shriek at the telly with it on occasion
but there are hours of entertainment to be had with the Harry Potter films if you have not watched them

spiritowl · 30/09/2023 00:32

@purpleme12 Home Improvement is all on Disney+

Not sure if this is what you're looking for but Bluey is great. Its really for kids (you'll find it on BBC) but I've been watching it with my DD18 and we both love it.

You and your DC who is 18 willingly watch Bluey together? And there’s no younger children in the house?

kikisparks · 30/09/2023 07:29

Depends if it’s your thing but Star Wars Rebels and the Clone Wars are cartoons but are still decent adult watching.

Anne with an E is good (but not as good as the 1980s one). Plus, Free Rein, if horses are popular in your household.

Edited

If horses are popular then heartland will keep you occupied for months 😅

DutchCowgirl · 30/09/2023 08:00

i’m watching Wednesday now with my nine year old (and 12 year old but he has already seen it). If he he likes this we’ll probably start with Stranger Things.

He really enjoyed Sweeth Tooth, also Willow (the new series!) , everything LOTR (hobbit, rings of power) , everything star wars (Mandalorian, Bobba Fett, Ashoka)

Hamilton1 · 30/09/2023 08:23

I haven’t actually seen The Big Bang Theory but my husband has and he thinks so. It really is very funny and clever. It’s definitely worth a watch.

Serenitymummy · 30/09/2023 08:30

There's no fucking way I'd let my 11yo watch Stranger Things, isn't that rated 15 (for good reason)?

A Series of Unfortunate Events is great family viewing, and we enjoyed Sweet Tooth but as pp have said that does get a bit dark.

For those that have watched Ghosts with their kids (dh and I love it) how do they get on with Julian, from memory he's a bit smutty???

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 30/09/2023 08:47

I'd thoroughly recommend Lost in Space the new version. Great family viewing!

kikisparks · 30/09/2023 09:02

Star Trek Next Generation might be ok, certainly at the older age.

sashh · 30/09/2023 09:19

If you can get it the Sarah Jane adventures, spin off from Dr who aimed at children, but I enjoyed it as an adult.

For anyone who enjoyed Ghosts, the US version is actually good. Different but approximate versions of the UK ghosts.

purplemunkey · 30/09/2023 09:22

Are Wednesday and Ghosts ok for a just about to turn 9 year old? I think I'd enjoy both these things but want to check they're ok for her age first!

Ffion21 · 30/09/2023 09:25

Mandalorian on Disney+

Ghosts is definitely.
Wednesday is a little bit darker but I don’t think it’s scary, depends on your 8-9 year old - if they’re fine with Harry Potter, say, then it’s similar.
