We're watching "Survivors" Brit Box at the minute: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072572/episodes/?season=1

We're about half way through Series Two. Has anyone else seen it? Or is anyone else currently watching it?

It's bizarrely captivating. I'm finding there's a stark lack of an overall story line, each episode is largely unconnected to the last one, all the characters are totally unlikable, the filming is terrible quality, the acting is appalling, and the working-class characters are all presented as 2-dimensional, filthy, scheming, workshy freeloaders. I should hate it. But I love it.

They've also done an audiobook (more recently, but with some of the original cast). That's really good.

Amazing! I remember watching this when it came out and being captivated.

I hope it won't spoil the story to say that (as I remember it) the individual stories are eventually linked. :)

I watched it in the 70s and enjoyed it although I did think it was a bit of a rip off of Day of the Triffids except they weren't blind.

AtomicBlondeRose · 20/09/2023 15:34

I was coming in to recommend the audiobooks. They’re also a bit random in parts but I couldn’t stop listening to them. I really like the “world” of the show.

NeedToKnow101 · 20/09/2023 15:38

I used to be absolutely terrified it that programme when I was a kid in the 70s.

I was just about to ask - what was it like to watch in the 1970s? Was the premise (global pandemic) something that you thought might actually happen?

DP and I were chatting about it last night.

Sorry if that's a horribly patronising question.

I didn't know there were audio books, that's really interesting.

@LiesDoNotBecomeUs Not a spoiler but very intriguing.... 😄

I remember watching it in the 70s. It was a time when we thought the world was likely going to end in nuclear armageddon. I was in CND.

I think they did a remake about 10 years ago? I watched that with DS2 and we both loved it but they never did a season 2.
Will search this out and watch again. I wonder if it dates well?

Abeli · 20/09/2023 15:44

The re-make was in 2008 and is on Prime if anyone interested.

SmallTreeDeepRoots · 20/09/2023 15:51

I’ve read the books, which were enjoyable. There are also some sequels. Will keep an eye out for the television prog.

There are a lot of 70s/80s books on a similar theme. It was the era of Limits to Growth/Cold War/environmental concerns/industrial unrest. A fascinating era to me - we thought we’d swerved the worst of it as we ticked up into the 80s/90s. Now much of it has come back to bite us.

Limth · 20/09/2023 15:55

I didn't know they did a remake - I might watch it after we've finished the original to see if it stacks up!

DP and I were particularly struck by the lack of Black and minority ethnic characters, the lack of strong women (apart from Abby but her whole story revolves around her motherhood and she's buggered off for Series Two), and the awful representation of working-class people.
I think a modern - not even going as far back as 2008 - re-make would be very different.

We watched "Threads" earlier this year. Jesus Christ. I can absolutely imagine how terrifying that would've been to watch in the 1980s and the threat of nuclear war.

I didn't really think about a global pandemic, it was just fantasy. I remember reading a newspaper article, can't remember if it was the writer or producer, anyway he was saying he'd be one of the survivors because he and his wife had a smallholding and a freezer full of food. I thought great wonder where the electricity is coming from. Didn't make me take it very seriously.

The Cuban Missile Crisis, now that was scary.

Lovestodrinkmilk · 20/09/2023 16:59

It seemed very real and plausible (and terrifying) to me back then and I still think of it as a TV highlight of my childhood.
