MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #43): Where we marvel over the singularity of Taecyeon’s ears while waiting for Lee Min Ho to show up in his space scrubs

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese, Thai & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4842000-mslattes-daebak-cybercafe-kdrama-addicts-42-where-we-weigh-up-two-smokin-hawt-chaebol-hotelliers-one-tortured-by-loss-and-the-other-crippled-by-abandonment-issues?page=1here
but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

That might be a thread I should investigate... 😏
Started on Twinkling Watermelon and can already tell its Just Wot I Like so a happy weekend binge awaits.
Up to date on Matchmakers and PMR and really enjoying both. Rowoon is making me laugh a lot in the former and evverybody and everything is making me laugh in the latter. Longing to do AGDtbaD but will hold back until its complete due to annoying scheduling

Yay pol! I loved Twinkling Watermelon - I thought it hit all the right notes - really hope you enjoy it 😊 am also loving PMR in all it's makjang glory.

I've just watched Semantic Error on Viki - it's been on my watchlist for ages and WHAT a perfect and adorable romcom! I absolutely loved it - plus short bingeable episodes 👍

MigsandTiggs · 24/11/2023 17:24

My Demon has landed on Netflix!

TheLoupGarou · 24/11/2023 18:10

Ooo! Migs is it the whole series?

On the SK holiday front South Korea with Alexander Armstrong was a disaster. Even I don’t want go now (only half joking). It was a terrible travelogue. They managed to pick all the shittest, grubbiest, most unattractive parts of Seoul and elsewhere to film. It went from one cliched, pointless set-up activity to another. AA’s delivery was inauthentic and leaden. It didn’t capture the flavour of the country at all, unless it really is an overpopulated, grotty, chaotic shithole with no culture, countryside or history and you were all fibbing. (Tiny exception for the Jeju bit, but WTF was all the ravening wild dog stuff about?) Any recommendations for alternative documentaries or travelogues to rebalance things & get my campaign back on track?

I tried watching this but decided it was shite even before I went to SK. I mean, putting kpop make-up on him? Very lazy journalism and shot really badly.

I actually think watching dramas set in different locations around the country is a much better preparation for visiting 😂

Did anyone notice in episode 11 of Strong Woman Nam Soon a dead body make a very definite movement?

I don’t see how it could’ve been on purpose as they were definitely dead - unless there’s a very odd plot twist yet to come.

They seem to specialise in just-in-time filming schedules. I haven’t watched this yet, so don’t know the circumstances. It’s possible the light/cast disposition/budget wasn’t in their favour and they didn’t have time to reshoot the scene.

Loup, Only ep 1 so far, with another tomorrow. When I saw 16eps I thought it was the whole lot at once and got excited. It's a hoot and that's after only one ep.

Andante57 · 25/11/2023 09:04

Boaty, yes that makes sense.
Also, was it you or another chingu who was watching Love Affairs in the Afternoon? I think it’s underrated but I suppose it’s quite slow moving.

boatyardblues · 25/11/2023 16:05

I got side-tracked from Love in the Afternoon, but I definitely plan to return.

So far Lee Sang Yi has much better chemistry with Demon’s FL than Song Kang.

TheLoupGarou · 25/11/2023 20:07

I flippin love Lee Sang Yi - why can he never get the girl?? Always the bridesmaid, apart from in Once Again - and he was so cute in that.

Making a start on The Story of Park's Marriage Contract^ (which we from here on out call TSOPMC)^

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 26/11/2023 16:04

Fine cast so far 👍

Saram13 · 26/11/2023 16:12

boaty and TheLoup I also like Lee Sang Yi (any chance of an appearance on the calendar Rowdy or FedUp? Not quite sure whether he's a mainstream or alternative oppa by usual standards....)

I've watched part two of My Demon and am enjoying it. Song Kang is eliciting precisely the response in me I anticipated he would i.e. slight disdain. So all is good in the world 😁. (I acknowledge he was actually actively good in Sweet Home - it's complicated 😁.)

boaty yes that Armstrong programme was crap. I agree with bettys that LAZY is the word. Didn't do the country any justice. I get that they were going for mainstream appeal so wanted to tick the obvious boxes, but there would have been other ways to do it. I did like the bit about death. [Surprises no-one]

Now I've finally gone and got Viki 😁I'm watching Twinkling Watermelon 🙌loving it. Plus Castaway Diva on Netflix (only half an episode in, but looks good so far).

boatyardblues · 26/11/2023 16:12

Is that on Netflix, FedUp?

boatyardblues · 26/11/2023 17:32

TSOPMC just put me in the mood for kimchi jeon. 🤤 A quick google threw up this recipe: https://www.yummly.co.uk/recipe/Kimchi-pancakes-314498?prm-v1 Does. Not. Compute. Kosher salt AND pork mince in the same recipe? Anyway, that’s the first time I’ve ever seen pork mince in a jeon recipe. 🤔
