Dh and I are going crazy as every evening ds insists we watch Dads Army, he’s obsessed and has watched every episode multiple times and knows all the facts about it. We can’t get him to watch anything else apart from a couple of shows that’s we’ve finished as everything else is ‘boring’ - apart from Greatest Events of WW2 in Colour! The only films he will watch are Jojo Rabbit and the Dungeons and Dragons movie. I don’t mind Jojo Rabbit but I can’t stand 70s style sitcoms or war stuff. Preferably the age rating for shows is 12 or under and nothing too creepy/scary/graphic as ds gets nightmares.

Just to add we have all the free streaming apps like iPlayer and all 4 as well as sky, Netflix, prime and Disney plus and are
willing to purchase anything!

He sounds like my ww2 obsessed son! 😆 I know it’s war related, but has he seen All Quiet on the Western Front? I enjoyed it too! And my DS absolutely loved it and has watched it numerous times now.

Whatsthepoint1234 · 29/08/2023 21:27

@1of2 I knew I was missing one! Yup, he’s seen it and read the book (it’s his favourite novel). I didn’t mind it as it was based on a book and he can’t make me watch a film every evening after his brother has gone to bed!

I feel your pain. DD 9 has discovered Randall and Hopkirk (deceased). sorry I have no suggestions other than 'allo 'allo which has some questionable representations of women.

We are going to introduce Keeping up appearances and hoping that gets DD off 60s/early 70s crime series. Prior to that it was Murder she Wrote.

Kids are weird.

Race across the World on iplayer has proved popular with all ages in our family.

Tickboxexercise · 29/08/2023 22:52

We are currently watching ‘Is it cake’ on Netflix, and ‘Rob and Romesh do…’ on Sky

Niftyswiftie · 29/08/2023 22:59

The man in the high castle is what I'm watching with my war mad 13yo ds.

Whatsthepoint1234 · 29/08/2023 23:07

@continentallentil ds loves Neil Gaiman and has read Good Omens so I will give it a shot tomorrow evening!

@mogtheexcellent I don’t know if I could sit and bear another old school ww2 sitcom if it’s got some sexist portrayals, it might just tip me over the edge! Honestly, I don’t know how they get into such old shows. Ds7 was watching the original 90s Danger Mouse the other day.

Funnily enough dh and I were talking about books ds might like earlier and he mentioned The Man in the High Castle as ds likes a dystopian novel. I’ll add this to my watch list!

Blackadder? You could start with WW1 (Blackadder goes forth) and jump back in time for the earlier series. Could be a good kicking off point to watch other output from the actors.

ProfessorLayton1 · 29/08/2023 23:25

Dd was obsessed with WW2 at that age. She knew all the dialogues of The great escape!
Dunkirk
Imitation game
New series on bbc iplayer - world on fire
World at war
Hacksaw Bridge
The thin red line
The monuments men
Midway
Saving Private Ryan
Enigma
The darkest hour
Letters from Iwo Jama

Other non Ww2 series we enjoyed
Race across the world
Simon Reeve - anything by him
Kindness diaries

crackofdoom · 29/08/2023 23:32

Is this a common phase for kids of this age?! My 13 year old DS is also obsessed with war at the moment! Luckily I like anything history related too, so we "enjoyed" (not quite the right word) Our World War on iPlayer recently. It's reconstructions of key moments in WW1, using accounts from serving soldiers.
