Ruth Wilson and Daryl McCormack are teaming up for a gripping new BBC drama, which is inspired by the horrifying revelations around Ireland's Magdalene Laundries.

The Woman In The Wall follows the horrors experienced by Lorna Brady (Ruth Wilson) is a woman from the small, fictional Irish town of Kilkinure, who wakes one morning to find a corpse in her house.

Lorna is chilled to the core as she has no idea who the dead woman is or if she could even be responsible for the apparent murder herself. This is a deadly possibility because Lorna suffers from extreme bouts of sleepwalking, which started around the time she was ripped from her life at the age of 15 and incarcerated in the Kilkinure Convent.

The Woman in the Wall follows Lorna Brady (Wilson), a woman who was incarcerated in a convent from a young age, where she traumatically gave birth – only to have the baby taken away from her to whereabouts unknown.

The awful treatment she endured continues to impact her life, causing extreme bouts of sleepwalking that end with her waking up in strange places with no memory of how she got there.

While her specific story is a work of fiction, the Magdalene Laundries were very real and are thought to have blighted the lives of tens of thousands of women.

Although their history dates back further, more is known about the practices of these institutions in the 20th century, where inmates entered via the criminal justice system, reformatory schools and the Health and Social Services sector.

Once inside, they would have to carry out unpaid labour, while many former inmates have reported being abused.

Magdalene Laundries became the subject of a media scandal in the 1990s, when a mass grave holding 155 bodies was discovered on the former grounds of one such institution in Drumcondra, Dublin.

I take back all my episode one comments ... I think this is being dealt with amazingly.

Yes. He always knew he was adopted but didn't think about his birth mother until he watched Philomena then he decided to find her.

I think you're getting things a bit confused. I saw Dara O'Briens show live. He was adopted but his birth mum wasn't in a laundry. He was making the point that under adoption law in Ireland an adopted child could not get information about their birth mother unless the birth mother agreed to it. That was why when he went looking the majority of the information about his birth mother was redacted. Thankfully after years of fighting the law has now been changed.

Clawdy · 10/09/2023 22:18

I guessed Colman would find a death certificate for himself. Not sure how they can stretch the storyline to two more hours though.

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/09/2023 22:18

OK not a laundry then. I got that bit wrong, but I'm sure he said it was after watching Philomena that he started considering his mother's situation.

Yeah he said he'd a happy upbringing and never really thought about looking for his birth mother until he saw Philomena and realised it wasn't just about him but about her too and maybe she deserved to know how well he was and that might give her some peace

I proper gasped outloud when he fell into that tunnel!
They've got a lot to tie up really - find the daughter, be reunited, find Aoife, find the detectives mum, bring down the priest/nuns.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 10/09/2023 22:35

It's so good, I think there's loads to get through in two more episodes.

Lorna holding the policemen to account for taking Clemence back was so good.

JenniferBooth · 10/09/2023 22:58

Yes and the scene between Lorna and the nun was powerful yet harrowing

Really?

Find Lorna's daughter
Find detective's birth mother
Find Aoife
Get Aoife's husband out of prison
Reveal fake Aoife daughter
Reveal Clementes murderer if not suicide
Resolve the campaigners campaign
Bring down the nasty old nun
Bring down the illegal adoption racketeers
Bring down the bishop
Reveal local plod's involvement
Give Lorna a future
What have I missed?

ImTheBakerLiteGirl · 10/09/2023 23:27

@LittleMonks11 Good summary!

Also - Find he link between creepy campaigner Dermot Crowley and the evil priests - or is it nice pregnant Niamh that isn't so nice? Surely not!

NowNumber5 · 10/09/2023 23:35

Just caught up.
A great episode tonight I thought.
I must admit I had something in my eyes when Lorna lit all the candles (where did she get 300 candles from?!) for the babies. Michael is a keeper.
Goodness wasn’t that nun, Sister Eileen I think, creepy!

Is fake Aoife daughter really not her daughter then?

I am also getting the feeling Nice Niamh isn’t quite all she seems…

ImTheBakerLiteGirl · 10/09/2023 23:53

@NowNumber5 that was my thinking too. Niamh seemed to have a very odd look on her face tonight.

AngryBirdsNoMore · 11/09/2023 00:03

Gosh the scene where she was lighting the last of the candles 💔 I thought that was beautiful.

daffodilandtulip · 11/09/2023 07:09

Makes you think though doesn't it - we just thought she was mad and over the top at the start. How many times does society make these assumptions about people without knowing a person's (horrific) past?

Yes. They are both creepy and hiding something.

I watched a stand-up programme with Dara O'Briain recently. He was one of those babies and he mentioned the adoption agencies continuing to operate illegally - basically selling babies. He eventually managed to find his mother and younger half siblings. It was very moving.

You really shouldn't be providing information to people about someone else as fact unless you know it's true. The only bit you got correct is that he thought to search for his birth parents after watching the movie Philomena. He felt maybe they should know how he is doing.

I don't know why you think "he was one of those babies" or that his Mother was in a Magdalene Laundry. That information was never disclosed by Dara.

I also dont think Dara said at anytime "adoption agencies continuing to operate illegally - basically selling babies".

If you want to provide proof he said this please provide links and I will be happy to apologise to you but it is very wrong what you just did.

If anyone wants the correct information, here's a link on an interview Dara did.

I wonder were the babies sold adopted to the US ?
Many were.

It was the impression I got from watching the stand-up and it upset me at the time. I'll accept I made a mistake but not that I was very wrong to discuss it. The information he did give was in a public performance. I'm sure he did say the bit about agencies continuing illegally because I came away with a very strong impression of that and told my husband about it straight after. I have no link and I'm not watching it all again so I'll just leave the thread. You have been unnecessarily nasty.

Not wrong to discuss Dara at all but wrong to disclose incorrect information. It's important that we dont fabricate information. The truth is harrowing enough without feeling the need to fabricate. The impression you got was very different to the facts he has disclosed to the media and public.

I can most definitely tell you that Dara did not say at anytime "the bit about agencies continuing illegally". Your sure he said that is certainly not good enough to state he actually said it.

I had a HORRIBLE nightmare last night, I think due to watching the 2nd episode last night.
The bus me and my 2 sons were on got invaded by police/vigilantes . Me and my younger son got taken off leaving my older son on the bus. All of us were in a hostage situation. I didn't know whether to get back on the bus to be with my older son, leaving my younger son with the other people (including some members of my family) outside.

I woke in a panic (rapid breathing, sweating) - the absolute fear in my older son's eyes as he looked at us from the upper deck of the bus.

The thought of being separated from our children against our will and knowing your children are scared must be one of the worst feelings. It's making me feel anxious just thinking about it now.

Maybe I won't watch any more.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/09/2023 09:32

Oh wow. That was a good episode

I hope he finds Catherine alive

Imagine that reunion

And same for Lorna and her daughter

All those candles. That was quite touching

I'm glad her hallucinations aren't real as stuffing her into the wall did take the story a bit too far ans take away the real pain and anguish

Oh @CharlotteBog What a horrible dream. Sometimes we watch something on television which is so harrowing it preys on our mind. Maybe give it a break for a while. I once watched something that upset me for weeks.

My teen daughter ever since she was little would sob her eyes out for something sad she watched. Her friends would laugh at her and she would be embarrassed. I once said to her that it was important to feel for moments of sadness and that it was worse to not feel at all.
