Most universally watched TV show in the UK?!?

If you took 90 diverse people living in the UK, the first person being aged 10, with the age increasing a year with each person and ending with 100, gave them unlimited time to tell you every TV show they have seen at least 5 minutes of, what would you reckon makes the top 25% of answers.

My guesses would be the following:
Come Dine With Me
Corrie
Doctor Who
Eastenders
ITV mornings (GMB, This Morning etc)
I am a Celebrity…
Emmerdale
Only Fools and Horses
Pointless
The Chase
The One Show
The Simpsons

What do you think?

Is your list in order because I’m pretty sure Come Dine With Me wouldn’t be anywhere near the top, if on the list at all?

I reckon it’d be the soaps as they’re so long running and people will have seen their parents or grandparents watching them before everyone got glued to iPads etc.

My list is (or should be) alphabetical.

I agree with you on the soaps.

Dr Who for sure. Simpsons as 2nd.

Readytoplay · 14/08/2023 13:32

*Quite a lot of people will have watched children's programmes with their children.

So I reckon.

  1. This is your life
  2. Doctor Who
  3. Blue Peter
  4. Top of the Pops
  5. Match of the Day*

@willingtolearn Yep, this is exactly what I mean. I would debate ‘This is Your Life’, purely because it hasn’t been on in years.

I agree about Come Dine with Me. No-one I know watches it. I have seen one episode simply because a friend was on it.

But you’ve still seen one episode, therefore you have seen it.

Unlikely
Bluely (To recent at present, and doubtful in the older half seeing it, especially as it’s on Subscription/cable. Maybe, in 10-15 years, it could be).
Pawn Stars (I have never even personally heard of it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not popular)
Storage Wars (Dito ‘Pawn Stars’)

Likely
BBC Breakfast (yes, I think most people who watch Morning Tv either watch ITV or BBC, with the exception of parents of young children who watch milkshake on Channel 5).
Judge Rinder (yep I think the average person has likely seen this).

Other
Jeremy Kyle (agree, but decided to included with ITV mornings as was part of that ‘block’)

Comefromaway · 14/08/2023 13:48

I've never seen Judge Rinder

Helendegenerate · 14/08/2023 13:53

Only Fools is probably the show I have watched over and over more than any other and still love it.

Much younger viewers are probably more interested in the reality type shows. Some of those imo are dismal.

Cas112 · 14/08/2023 13:59

I dont know but I LOVE four in a bed.

Twizbe · 14/08/2023 14:00

Bluey is on BBC … both sets of grandparents have watched it.

it’s also got a growing following among the child free because it’s just so nice.

calmcoco · 14/08/2023 14:02

Strictly, Bake Off, BGT, MOTD, Deal or No Deal are my guesses.

PuttingDownRoots · 14/08/2023 19:34

Bluey is just the latest in a long line of childrens programmes that caught attention... before that it was Hey Duggee, Teletubbies, Thomas the Tank Engine.....

tennissquare · 14/08/2023 21:36

Strictly and Bake off, I have never watched or am aware of anyone who has watched Judge Rinder.

DanceToTheMusicInMyHead · 14/08/2023 21:46

Teletubbies. I reckon anyone that has been a child, had a child or had grandchildren in the last 25 years (surely the majority of the population) will have seen it at some point. My 95 year old gran when looking after her (now 25 year old) grandson, my parents while looking after my kids, me as a parent, and now my kids. 4 generations. Thomas the Tank engine and Fireman Sam possibly similar

If you are talking 'ever' rather than current, you'd surely have to include

Blue Peter
Generation Game
Fawlty Towers
Morcombe and Wise Show
Top of the Pops
Match of the Day
Grandstand
Watch with Mother
Have I Got News for You
Coronation Street
Jackanory
Crackajack
Eastenders

just off the top of my head.

AnyFucker · 14/08/2023 22:30

My Family

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 14/08/2023 23:28

Those aged 50-100 will have had a much smaller choice of programmes to watch.

That doesn't make sense . They have been alive for longer and more likely to watch TV than younger people .
